I've never done much of anything in the first trimester due to extreme nausea. But once that calms down, I do lots of yoga and a bit of light weightlifting, hiking, swimming, and walking.

Since I'm good about listening to my body, my cardiologist didn't even ask me to monitor heart rate during exercise. He didn't think it was a big deal.

I ran, took Zumba classes (regular and in the water), did prenatal yoga, used the elliptical and treadmill all up until the day I went into labor. These were all things I did before I was pregnant, and had no issues while I was pregnant.

I kept it pretty normal. Did a half marathon at 12 weeks, sprint triathlon at 23 weeks, ran until 38 weeks. Obviously I wasn't out there sprinting and going as hard as I could but they were pretty hard workouts. And I did weight lifting twice a week as well. I don't like the HR limitations as every person is different and there's no way an OB can tell you the right range to be in. On a scale of 1-10 with exertion/being out of breath, I just wouldn't go above a 7 or 8 as a general rule.

I was working out 4-5 times a week until I was about 5 weeks pregnant, and haven't since. Ugh.

I do plan on getting back on track. I'll be doing Beachbody workouts, and just modifying for pregnancy (not as much core, and really taking it slow). My midwives said that if you don't have a heart rate monitor, or don't want to fuss with one, you can just trust your breath. Getting winded would be a sign to slow down.

I'm 23 weeks and have continued to do CrossFit 3-4 times per week. I just listen to my body, don't push myself so hard that I'm out of breath, and am easing up on weights so that I'm not straining. So far so good!

i ran until about 20 weeks, lifted weights, and did spin right up until about 8.5 months. i didn't pay attention to my heart rate, just was careful not to push it too hard if i was feeling bad--normally i will frequently work out to the point of nausea but definitely stopped well short of that during pregnancy! that said, i felt like i could handle a lot right up until about 7 months.

As far as your concern on heart rate, google steven t little. He's one of the trainers at Peloton (spin) and preaches not-overexercising and heart rate training. He keeps you at a lower heart rate for slightly longer periods. This might be good for you as far as trying to keep your heart rate down.
Work smart, not hard.

I swam laps and went on long walks/hikes with my dog throughout pregnancy, did prenatal yoga up until the last two months, and did cardio (usually jogging or biking) and some weights till probably month 5 or 6 - I think I took it a little easy on that, though.

I worked out with all of my pregnancies (3 total, 2 live births) right up until the week I delivered. I tried to make it a priority to go at least 4-5x/week and stuck mostly to cardio, barre/Pilates/ prenatal yoga, and some free weights. I just listened to my body and cut back on the intensity if it felt like I was doing too much.

I rode a bike with a trailer until my due date, and long distances, too. I always stopped and rested when I needed to, and made sure to stay hydrated, and I felt great. I came out of that pregnancy with more heart muscle than I started with, so I feel pretty happy about it.

Last time I ran until about 20 weeks, but then my bladder just became too uncomfortable so I did yoga and some low impact cardio. I had my son at 34 weeks so I'm taking it much easier this time. I'm doing yoga 2-3 days a week and I do a lot of walking for my commute (5 miles a day) so that's pretty much all I need with a toddler at home.

I did crossfit through 39 weeks in my first pregnancy and am going so far into this one (almost 11 weeks) although very erratic because of first tri grossness.

I've been doing CF for 5.5 years so feel pretty comfortable still doing it and just go slower and lighter. Also intend to do some dumbbell workouts at my work gym because my CF schedule as a working mom is hard to negotiate!

I say keep it up if and when you feel good.

@matador84: I "maxed" out my cardio quite often. I talked a lot with my OB who said it was absolutely fine and the HR limit stuff is absurd. There's been zero research to show it could possibly harm baby. I also had a lot of energy, was sleeping well and in general had a very easy, super enjoyable pregnancy which I know is not the case for everyone.
I ran, swam and Spin til the day I gave birth. And let me tell you, that kid flew out of me in a 5hr unmedicated birth! Must have been all that tightening of muscles!

I did Crossfit until I was 37 weeks, with modifications. My doctor was completely ok with it because I had been doing it for about 2 years before pregnancy. As a result, I really felt great and avoided hip and back pain during pregnancy. I stopped because my belly got big enough that the amount of modifying I was going to do was absurd. I walked after that. I did a bunch of yard work and trimmed trees the day before I was induced! I watched my heartrate but just to make sure it wasn't staying too high for a long period. I made sure I could breathe and talk through the workout.

With my first I stopped around 31 weeks - I had too much going on, and chose to conserve my energy (renovating and moving into new house at 35 weeks!)

This time I am 34+3 and still doing my boot camps 3 days a week, and spinning two days a week. I JUST did my last burpees this morning - I've decided to phase those out.

My issue is I and in the zone - that zone where your alarm goes off and you just get up and do it without thinking - it takes me sooooo long to get in this zone. To get past the "uugh, I hate working out" hurdle. I hope to go to 38 weeks, then after that I will walk/jog/maybe do yoga.

With my first I ran until 20 weeks (but had a jury trial from weeks 13-16 so didn't work out much then). I then did elliptical and weights and walking until 30 weeks when I had preterm labor.

With my second I ran until 18 weeks and then walked daily until 30 weeks and also stopped then due to contractions.

This pregnancy I was in good shape prior but only ran until 12 weeks because it got cold and icy. I am 18 weeks and do elliptical, walks, -!: biking. I'll probably try prenatal yoga even though I'm really not a yoga gal.

I don't worry about heart rate. Just listen to my body.

With my first, I quit running pretty early and mostly did elliptical and weights (squats, deadlifts, step-ups, upper body, etc).

With my second, I quit running around 25w and mostly switched to hiking with a little bit of elliptical and yoga.

With my third, I ran a marathon at 16w preg and quit running for good at 20w. I switched it up and did a LOT of yoga/prenatal yoga, mixed in with some ellpitical and walking.

I don't think it's an issue that your heart rate goes up, just that you need to adjust the duration & intensity so that it isn't like that for the whole workout/long periods of time. When I was hiking a lot, my heart rate would definitely jump quicker on the climbs than normal. I would just take breaks when I needed (fairly often!), drink lots of water, and try to adjust the duration so that I wouldn't overdo it.

I know there are mama's out there who worked out while pregnant! I was a bump on a log my first two pregnancies and am determined not to be that way this pregnancy. I've been working out 4-5 times a week but since my BFP haven't hardly made it to the gym.

I normally wear a heart rate monitor and have been worried because I'm maxing out so fast and for what's not really a good amount of time to max my HR out at. THis is while I'm doing simple stuff like biking/light cardio. What kind of things did you do while working out pregnant?
