Some days I get to work at 7 am and get home after 10 pm (not too often though). On those days, the only contact I get with Little Jacks is while we're asleep. At least I get to snuggle her because we co-sleep :)

i'm always home before bedtime except when i have grad school at night (wednesdays)... my husband almost always comes home after bedtime so he spends his mornings with LO.. he takes care of his morning bottle, diaper, and play time before he goes to work :)

My husband always misses bedtime and often leaves for work before LO wakes up. He will go days without seeing our daughter and it's SO sad! Thankfully, my jobs allows me to be home before bed time.

@Andrea: sometimes... My kids are a bit older though so it's gotten easier, especially after my baby passed 4 months. And we as a family tend to sleep later and wake up later than most too. They bathe together after dinner... Then usually baby goes down first (around 7:30) while toddler has quiet time in her room... DH tries to get home around this time. but sometimes doesn't. Then my routine with toddler starts and our target bedtime for her is 8:30 or 9. She wakes up at 9am (sometimes later!) and gets to preschool at 10. She has a later schedule than most her peers... Always has, but it works for us because DH doesn't go to work til 10a either... and she makes it to Circle Time. Life is much easier when DH doesn't miss bedtime though!! LO does like to wait for him and sometimes I let her if her wakeup time is not an issue the next day (she has no school or morning activities on Thursdays).

@NYCaliMama: do you have both kids by yourself at lot? like mrs. bee mentioned, i wonder how you put two kids to bed at the same time. i know my SIL refuses to do it and has my BIL come home early ever since they had their second child.

@Mrs. Bee: yup, my husband never has to work late. Once the baby comes, we will both be working 7-4. Thankfully, those late nights are quite rare. I felt bad for my co-worker who was there with me until 8:30, he did miss bedtime for his son. :-(

After our first LO, I changed jobs too. My 12 hr shifts just weren't ideal for our situation/childcare needs. When I was a working mom, there were a few instances where I had to stay late due to patients' conditions. But for the most part, my supervisors knew I had to pick her up from daycare at a certain time everyday. I made that clear upon getting hired. So I never missed bedtime due to work. DH unfortunately did a lot when we just had one LO. Now that we have two LOs, he misses it less, but he still does a lot because he's been very busy at work. Our eldest LO will fight sleep sometimes to see him though (understandably so).

No idea!! I plan to make it clear to the partners I work with that I have to leave at 5. Since dh is in residency I can't rely on him for child care pick up (though there will be times when he can do it). When I'm in a bind I will just log on to work after LO goes to bed. It's going to be a big change from my hours now but work will just have to deal! Dh on the other hand will probably miss bedtime more often : (

It happens sometimes. When I was breastfeeding I refused but now that my son has weaned, if it happens it is okay as long as it doesn't happen too often. When it does, I just make sure to sneak into his room and give him a soft kiss.

mr bee used to come home after charlie was asleep before olive was born. but luckily he is able to come home for bedtime now that we have two kids so we can divide and conquer (i don't know how some parents put both kids to sleep by themselves).

is your husband able to always be home for bedtime?

I changed jobs also to one that was more flexible and closer to my work. My last job required way too much travel and long hours that I knew I couldn't do that with a baby. It all worked out in the end though.

I had to change jobs so that I could always be home to put my LO to bed. DH arrives home every night after bedtime. Sad reality. =(

So, I'm still at work, waiting on a developer to send us a fix for a customer. I work 8-5 unless catastrophes happen...like today. So, it's 7:35 and I'm 30 minutes from home with at least another half hour of work left to go. I guess on nights like these, I just wouldn't see my LO before she goes to bed? That makes me so sad to think about it!

Have any of you working parents run into this since your LO was born?
