@hotchildinthecity: I've managed to teach D to open up his mouth and push unchewed stuff out after a while, which is gross but better then it hanging in there all day and slowly leaking out (tmi!)

If he likes black beans, what about chickpeas? D loves chickpea curry from our fav afghani kabob place :)

@hotchildinthecity: sounds like he is making great progress! Could you cook veggies and gradually cook them for less time each time you serve them? Like at first green beans or carrots very soft and then work up to a little more crisp/less cooked so he has to crunch a little?

I would also try some of the Gerber toddler snacks that melt quickly like yogurt melts (especially if he likes the taste), Cheeto type snack, arrowroot cookies. All of those melt pretty quickly.

Or things like the black bean and pea snacks from TJs.

We do a lot of roasted broccoli at our house- chop into bite size pieces (I do the stem too) drizzle some olive oil, salt and pepper and roast till browned at the edges. They get a little bit crispy but still soft- so maybe a good in between soft and crunchy?
What about puffs or mum-mums- maybe they would get him into the habit of crunching something?

My DD doesn't have issues with eating but still loves steamed carrots and baked sweet potato chunks/sticks. They're soft but still have some resistance and texture so good for chewing. She prefers steamed baby carrots to raw carrots because it's faster to actually get them in her belly! And sweet potato "fries" (I chop them into roughly 1/4"-square by 3-long sticks, coat with olive oil and a pinch of salt, and bake in the oven) are one of her favorite things...DH and I like them too. DD will sometimes eat steamed broccoli but doesn't really like the texture of the florets so if I think of it, I peel the stalk and cut it into sticks to steam with the rest of the broccoli and give her those instead.

@lamariniere: thanks! I felt so discouraged when she said we needed to take the "next step" because it seemed like food planning/prep/encouraging just became a little less exhausting. But a mom's work is never done, right? ;)

These are all great ideas, thanks! He has gotten a recent affinity for black beans so I was thinking of trying other beans and/or making a bean salad.

We're trying sweet potatoes tonight!

I definitely have to try more fruits. I have blueberries in the fridge and can throw them in his lunch tomorrow.

What about chick peas, lima beans, or black beans? My LO liked all those things when she was just learning to do finger foods. They need chewing but are soft. I would start with Chick Peas if he likes hummus since he'll be used to the taste, and just has to adjust to the new texture.. and then expand from there.

@Mrs. Tiger: similar here. J puts something in his mouth that might need too much chewing and then gradually goes into a panic until he spits it out :/

@ShootingStar: @avivoca: my therapist mentioned cheese sticks, so that's definitely on the list. Oranges are a good idea too. And we have been cutting up cold cuts and mixing them in with things.

Once DS could chew a bit, we started giving him what we were eating. Meats got cut up really small, and we avoided raw veggies, but other than that we gave him what we eat.

I do have a lot of his favorite foods in rotation for lunches though - mandarin oranges, cheese sticks, cold cuts, and roasted squash chunks. Sometimes I send in leftovers from dinner, and sometimes we'll get a rotisserie chicken and I'll give him that for a couple days in the week.

Maybe crunchy foods that dissolve easily? Crackers, cheerios, chex, puffs, etc? Gerber (and target) have healthier versions of cheetos for toddlers also.

We're working on the chewing thing too :) right now D prefers to just clamp down and slowly dissolve things that aren't pureed.

Hmm... I'm not sure these are necessarily "in-between", but Xander started eating things like crackers and breads after purees and before he fully started eating more finger foods.

For those who don't have the backstory on my LO, we took custody of him six months ago and he was on a formula-only diet at age 2, drinking only from a bottle.

Through early intervention and our work at home, he has come leaps and bounds but we're in a lull right now, and our speech/feeding therapist wants us to stop relying on old favorites and push/challenge him more.

Right now, he eats things like pasta, rice, couscous, yogurt, bananas, all kinds of nut butters, cottage cheese, oatmeal, ice cream, hummus, avocados, and recently chicken and shrimp chopped into small pieces.

He's just now starting to learn how to chew and we're slowly working on veggie stix (the chip things) to get him to get the motion down. But the therapist has asked me to not rely on yogurt and nut butters (his favorites) just to ensure he will eat at daycare. I usually send like a rice/pasta, banana + PB and a yogurt.

So what's the "next step" aka the in between of crunchy foods and purée-like textures?
