Our schools are closed end of day Monday and will get at home instruction sent home. They might be sending home their in classroom ipads? I'm not sure as we haven't gotten a lot of details yet. I have a first grader and 2 preschoolers. I'm working on a schedule and will have the preschoolers do online educational games and letters/numbers tracing worksheets while the older does her homework. I'm assuming my office will send us home but that still hasn't happened. Thank goodness spring weather is starting to settle in and we can go outside at least.

DH and I are currently not agreeing on plans since he thinks we should just travel to see family during this time off school. However, I'd rather stay put where I at least have control of the cleaning and have our regular stuff on hand in case we get sick.

Our schools are still open but I assume they won't be for much longer. The kids at 7 and 4.5. DH and I both assume we can work from home. DH already does 3 days a week. My job requires about two days a week of hands on work so if I'm cleared to work from home it will probably be only certain days or half days.

DH and I are planning to split the days. Like he'll watch the kids for three hours at some point, me for three hours and three or four hours of tv. We also think we're going to let the kids play with other kids on the block (if the other parents agree). We haven't totally thought that through.

Depending on my situation I'd like to offer to watch another family's kids. Someone that can't take time off due to health care job or financial reality. But I recognize my offer would be for fairly crappy care and I doubt DH would be on board.

@karenbme: I’ve worked from home with a baby before, but it’s pretty much impossible if both my kids are home. If it’s just the first grader that could be okay, but the 3 year old not so much.

Our schools have closed for 2 weeks.

DH has work from home capabilities so as of now he will work from home and our 6 yo will be there....

Our daycare (inhome) has not closed yet, so as of now our 3 yo will continue to go there

My work has no work from home capabilities BUT I know a lot of us are parents and a lot of us will have to be the ones to stay home (i'm not in that category... but i know 3-5 that would be)… as it is now they are stating we would have to use our PTO/time off butttttttttttt I'm kind of hoping that changes and they offer some type of paid leave. If they do then I'll be staying home with both kids.

The schools are sending home some work stuff today with the kids so i guess we'll have DD look at that daily.. other than that we'll plan to stay home as much as possible and enjoy the time together/off...….

A lot of college students in my area are looking for babysitting work in my area since the college closed too. It might be worth it for you to hire someone for the short term.

So, we are thinking through this now as we await more info from our schools, they are closing the next couple days to figure out a plan, I'm sure they will close for the next few weeks.

My office just told us to work remotely for the next month. We're very lucky that we have a nanny that comes already for 5-6 hours a day, so we will shift her hours to be earlier so I can work while the kids are home....

My kids are in preschool and 1st. Hoping the schools provide some guidance on work to do at home, but we've started outlining a daily plan for each kid that will involve: schoolwork with worksheets/books, etc - practicing writing for my older, some tablet-learning time, still researching various programs, we will have cleanup time where each kid will have one chore a day, then outdoor play time after lunch, and maybe one more hour of school, and some time to play boardgames... I think having a schedule mapped out for each will be KEY so they have something structured to follow while home. Already my first-grader is asking if he can play video games all day :meh:

After going back to work with my first in Jan, I negotiated one day per week of work from home where I keep the baby home with me and work during naps and occasionally when she’s happy on her play mat independently (and I’m sitting a few feet away). I’m not going to lie, it’s HARD. I start working after her first feed in the morning and don’t really stop until I feel like I’ve gotten enough done (usually after dinner). I never get as much done as if I were in the office, but I also work a job where I have to be responsive at all times anyways, so having more time with DD makes up for the times when I’m at work or on email or conference calls after hours/on weekends.

I’m not sure how it’ll work full time, though I kind of expect it’s inevitable as well. At least we’ll all be in it together when it does happen. If there are two adults home, I imagine it will be easier because you can switch off who is primary for kiddos. That said, my DH really can’t work remotely because of security concerns and specialized equipment at his office, so I doubt he’ll wind up home even if I do.

Assuming this is inevitable for many of us at this point, does anyone have plans for what to do if you are expected to work from home full time, but also have to manage a young school ager’s online/remote instruction, and care for younger children? I know there are many of you on here with no family nearby, or who can’t work from home, so I am very interested in hearing from you.

I’m pregnant and exhausted (thanks pregnancy insomnia) so working before/after the kids are sleeping/awake is very difficult (they sleep about 8:30pm-6:30am). I also just started a new job and have no leave time. My husband is a financial advisor so this is also a very busy time of year for him and he is already working evenings and weekends to keep up so I’d be doing it on my own. ETA my kids also fight all the time now.
