I appreciate that they are very straight with me and don't worry about sugar coating things for me. I find my male bosses and coworkers to be quite understanding about me being a wife and mother. </p> <p>I hate to say it, but I have been a bit tough on the other women working with me. I do feel like women are more emotional in the workplace, which has its pros and cons. My husband works in a male dominated field and he and his coworkers will argue about things to the point of almost yelling at times--like, pretty brutal with each other. And then they all go to happy hour and everything is forgiven.</p> <p>You only have to compare internet boards like say Reddit (male dominated, although of course there are women) to Hellobee or Weddingbee or even Gomi (all female dominated) to see that women get their feelings hurt more but can also be a lot more judgemental in general.</p> <p>Like in the other thread where we are talking about if Hellobee gets us upset. Most of us women have to avoid talking or responding when we feel strongly, whereas men are more likely to have it out but not hold hard feelings. I don't have that trait---if someone really crosses me, I have a hard time seeing them the same way ever again. I do think it's a *typical* female trait, even if of course, not all women follow it.</p> <p>So how does it translate to the work place for me? It depends. </p> <p>I've had a male boss that would yell at all the female teachers which would cause a lot of crying (if it were men, they would probably just take it and care less). We all loathed him. I also had a female boss who was awful--she supposedly "did it all" (with a lot of money and family close by) so had 0 sympathy for a woman who had to take a sick day for a sick child. But I've also had a female boss that cared SO MUCH (emotionally) about our school kiddos that she would do anything for them....less compartmentalization between "work" and "self".</p> <p>I also currently have a very traditional male boss who is kind of chauvinistic in a good way--like, when I was pregnant and there was a snow storm, he came directly to my classroom and told me to leave early and that he personally would cover my class. He said if his wife were pregnant, he would worry about her driving. He also gave me a special parking place by the front door so I didn't have to walk as far, lol. I honestly don't think a female boss would ever do that. SCORE.</p> <p>In short, I do think there are differences...generally speaking, between men and women in the workplace. Women are more dramatic and get all butt hurt when criticized, and take things very personally. I agree with @RunnerD: that female bosses, at least the ones I've had, seem to be more compassionate and level-headed. However, the social politics and drama that seem to come with the supposed fairer sex are enough to make me run screaming in the other direction. </p> <p>I've never been much of a "girls' girl" and I firmly believe in keeping my work life separate from my professional life. I think this wouldn't be such a cause of uproar if I worked with either mostly men or a more equal mix of men and women. Additionally, I work in a 95% female, and 98% female-run, organization that is headed by a man who comes from a cultural background that does not value women on the same level I believe American women expect. </p> <p>I guess I'm a little all over the place. I feel more comfortable with women and enjoy working in such a female-centric workplace. With my previous employer my department was just women and in my current position there are only women employees. I guess I'd be in the 4% with the rest of the Gen Xers who prefer working with women.
