@Kemma: oh I absolutely agree. Which is why this was so upsetting to me and making me reconsider working there if things didn’t change. Luckily it didn’t come to that but I’m sure this won’t be the last ‘debate’ and it has changed my perception of my coworkers permanently. In lots of people’s cases, including mine, my coworkers also genuinely believe their ideas are right and is ethical, and the governments recommendations are wrong and thus unethical.

I’m sure it’s different everywhere, but I think this issue will come up quite a bit as things open up as the recommendations are still not mandatory here, even outside of businesses. Face coverings are ‘strongly suggested’. Cleaning protocols are a vague ‘we will clean more often’ but really who knows what that means? Stay home and keep within your family when many people are not doing this out of necessity or by choice. Keep social distance...just go to a grocery store and see how well this works. How is anything enforced to ensure the question of ethics or personal belief is not the guiding principle? I know of bylaw being called for gatherings and tickets given in parks where patrols are happening, but in a store or clinic or business where there isn’t an outside observer they will rely on someone reporting if it’s unsafe or not. I even looked into my rights as an employee if I had to look into having an inspector come in and basically if the business follows ‘reasonable safety steps’ I cannot refuse work and the business is deemed safe. Very up to interpretation. This is why I really hope others can put aside their personal thoughts so patrons can trust they are doing the right thing. It’s opened my eyes that there are those who strongly believe against the mainstream and are willing to fight against it even in a small capacity like this. That it’s not unethical if you believe you are right.

Just my opinion but isn’t that kind of unethical for a healthcare business to not be following the safety protocols set down? I feel like it doesn’t actually matter what sort of personal beliefs people hold, they still have a serious responsibility to provide the safest possible environment for clients and staff.

@misolee: yes exactly. I was feeling a lot of guilt thinking I wouldn’t be able to be straightforward with clients that we follow every precaution to keep them safe because some would and some wouldn’t. If I hear the phrase ‘everyone has different comfort levels’ one more time, I’m gonna lose my mind! It’s not about comfort! It’s about doing the right thing! I immediately texted everyone about the gloves and surface cleaning so they all know now.

@MenagerieMama: I honestly said to DW I was thinking maybe I don’t belong in this organization anymore if this is what it’s coming to. The job market and uncertainty made me put that on the back burner for now but I am not willing to put myself and family, plus clients at risk for my job. I’m sorry your DH is facing this as well. It’s completely maddening.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think our rational boss must have read the bro’s the riot act as our most recent team meeting tone flipped suddenly to ‘fine we will do what the masses want FOR NOW’. I think also in part to seeing some competing clinics reopening guidelines and our professional associations protocol was released. Everyone is masking up, sanitizing with proper CDC cleaner, hand sanitizer, and limiting in person visits. We are now doing the same and our clients will be emailed and website updated. I’m still wary of their attitudes but crisis averted for now. I feel so much better as I really didn’t know what to do! I appreciate everyone’s feedback. It made me feel less alone

DH works in a large healthcare facility that has been suuuuuper slow to make any appropriate changes. And he's literally down the road from the first cluster outbreak in the States. They only started masking all staff this week, he was the only one wearing a mask for weeks! Anyhow, it's been really scary to have him at work, he's been doing all he can to make changes in the facility, but he actually may end up resigning if it can't be a safe enough place for him to stay at, especially when the second wave comes in the fall. I'm not sure he'll have another job by the time we set as a deadline for him to resign by, which really scares me. But we also feel like he's in a ticking time bomb. We both work in healthcare but my organization has been really on top of it, and his has been very concerning.

Even if they don’t believe in Covid (which major eye roll bc I know those too), they should still be following things like cleaning guidelines that were in place before all this happened esp because it’s a healthcare setting. Leaving the gloves out and not cleaning surfaces shouldn’t be not done :bummed: I think for the sake of you, other employees, and other patients, you need to speak up. You can’t control what they believe but as a healthcare service provider, they need to follow the regulations and guidelines given about workplace safety and how to handle accepting patients.

Sorry you are going through this. I don't know the answer. My company is small and half are taking it extremely seriously and half are not. We are trying to figure out how to handle going back to the office. Probably alternating who goes into the office on what days, with others continuing to work from home on the other days. That still leaves the problem of germs on all surfaces, though. It is going to be really interesting to see how all of this plays out.

@periwinklebee: thank you. I feel so much for those of you in the US right now as we watch from Canada. It’s so unfair and I guess I just naively thought I wouldn’t have to deal with this mentality within groups I am close with. Thankfully none of our friends and family share these thoughts.

Case in point, I had to do an urgent non contact service for a client this morning and one of the bro’s had been in on Monday. 4 disposable gloves were left out on our reception desk and shared lab surface. Who knows who used those? Why he didn’t put them in the garbage?! And no cleaning supplies were out so he didn’t wipe surfaces after.

Strangers, I get it. So many people don’t distance properly but it’s thankfully a millisecond interaction. But this is hours and hours of shared time. Thankfully it looks like our reasonable boss is growing a backbone and taking a harder stance. Whether they personally follow through, I don’t know though...

@muffinsmuffins: this post made me so angry for you, what total morons. They should go out and expose themselves, then expose others they're around who could very well die or suffer permanent health damage 😒

No suggestions really, but this whole crisis makes me even more disgusted with politics and many people in society than I already was. We could have been using this time in which so many people have made enormous sacrifices to stay home to prepare a plan to safely reopen, but instead half the country and the Trump administration seem bent on declaring victory and screaming about their individual rights, with no regards to how it affects others or just how many people their magical thinking will kill...I'm so sorry you have to work with some of these people - no words... I mean, I know every time we get in the car we could be killed by some moron who insists on texting and driving, and examples like this go on and on, but with COVID the odds of something bad happening are even higher and it is just infuriating...

That is just crummy. Whether they believe in it or not they need to take the right precautions for those around them. If they are not following guidelines are patients even going to want to see them?

Sorry that you have to go through this.

@Mrs. Carrot: it’s a small business and the bosses are actually brother and sister! It’s leaning towards we will go with what the ‘uneducated’ people like myself want to do 🙄 and there’s no higher up or HR as we are a small business.

Other than the fact it’s driving me crazy listening to them, my biggest issue is that there is talk of using one assessment room for all practitioners and clients. This will streamline our office but I feel I’m relying on my colleagues that much more to do the right thing and I’m not sure they will...but I know I have to get over it ultimately. It just feels crappy to be at the mercy of people who I know really well and not strangers.

I would hope they would wear PPE just for the sake of their clients, whether or not they care if they get it.

Going forward these next few months will be hard because a lot of people are just going to be 'over it' I think. My office is pretty mixed in opinions, my boss doesn't really care, but we have our own spaces to 'distance' and I have sanitizer and wipe down shared surfaces.

All you can really do is protect yourself, wear a mask, wash your hands, etc.

I think this is a question of who's the decision-maker in your office (do the bosses have to agree? is there someone else above them who decides? who's holding them accountable for whatever the decisions and practices are ultimately decided on?) and the question for you of what you are willing and able to tolerate yourself. If you have someone above them that you can go to (HR, director, etc.), I would express concerns about this. But ultimately it might be a question of whether your job is a safe environment for you to stay in, if you can't trust that precautions are being taken. It sucks, but unfortunately there's probably not much more control you can have here.

It’s something that I’ve just made peace with. I can’t control others. I can’t control that kids at the playground may not be vaccinated. I can’t ask everyone we come in contact with for the next year or so if they’ve had symptoms or come in contact with someone who has. It’s sucks, but there really isn’t a perfect way to do this. All I can control is my own family’s social distancing and behavior. We will make good choices when we can and let the parts we can’t control go. I’d absolutely speak to HR or whoever at your office could set some ground rules for how to continue. But again, if someone chooses not to follow and there are no consequences, then I’m not sure what else you could do. Of course there’s always drastic steps (quit your job or find alternate childcare - perhaps with someone young who’s low risk) but that’s not feasible for everyone. We’ll get through this, but there will just be a lot of bumps along the way

I guess I’m looking for WWYD perspectives and/or commiseration with this post:

I work in a small allied healthcare clinic. Two bosses, myself and two other practitioners. One of my bosses and one of my coworkers are crazy paleo, CrossFit, verging on anti-vax health nut type men who don’t buy the hype about COVID, think it’s all overblown, think we all should expose ourselves, the lockdown was wrong, etc etc. My other boss and coworker are like myself, as in we are the total opposite of them.

Our office has been closed since mid March. Our province is talking of reopening but hasn’t given a date yet. The last few weeks of team meetings have been about what our protocol will be since we are in very close quarters with clients and cannot maintain social distancing. The two bro’s constantly argue with us about how mainstream media is wrong and these podcast guys they know think we all just need to go back without protection, etc etc. It’s literally driving me insane.
I’m having major anxiety thinking I can’t trust either of them to uphold what we agree on or to follow our professional association and governments guidance to keep us and clients safe. I know I can only control my own actions but if they aren’t following the rules properly, it puts my family and myself as well as our patients and other coworkers at risk. We may need to rely on my in laws for childcare at our home and they are in their 70’s. I don’t want to take risks even if the science is mixed. I just want to take precautions so we can say we did everything we could to help the cause and so I can feel safe going back there.
