I worked out like usual (CrossFit, barre, spinning, whatever I was doing at the time) throughout my TWWs. The only time I changed was post-IUIs.

One of my friends played competitive tennis until she was 7.5 months pregnant (at that point, the exercise started causing contractions and she had to stop). I think you'd be find to keep doing your normal workouts during your 2ww.

@mrslion and @blackbird that makes sense, thanks! I don't get breathless until I'm at 175 or 180, so I'd be hardly working at all if I tried to keep my heart rate under 140.

@astrobee wow, that is impressive! Great inspiration to not make excuses when I do get a BFP!

I'm sure you're fine. At 4w6d, I did my annual military fitness test, which is designed to assess your overall level of fitness. Not sure how high my hb went, but expect it was pretty high. Most of the 4 activity tests are 1-3 mins, but quite high intensity, with a mandatory 5 min break in between. I could probably have gotten out of it for this year, but wasn't ready to tell my bosses I was pregnant yet.

I'm now 11w6d and baby is doing great! My doc encourages me to work out, with the same activities I was doing before, just at a reduced intensity and/or duration.

I don't do the heart rate test at all, i go by the breath test. I'll easily hit 170 but stop at about there--that's when i get out of breath. Exercising increases oxygen to the fetus and will cause more growth of vessels on the placenta; ie your body adapts to your exercise in a positive manner for the baby.

This is such a timely question. I just started a fitness program after not really working out for awhile. We are also going to start TTC very shortly. I know that they say you can continue on working out like you normally do but I wasn't really sure what constitutes "normal" if you just started up. Hopefully if/when we get that BFP soon, I can continue with my program and just listen to my body. :)

I have read that instead of the heart rate guideline to go by the talk test....can you have a conversation while working out? The reason being if you can breathe well enough to talk you are getting enough oxygen, but if you can't then you arent, which means the baby isn't either. I think it's a pretty good guideline :)

I would do whatever you normally do, especially since you're not pregnant yet. Your workouts aren't going to have any effect on TTC or implantation.

And BTW my OB also said the 140 bpm is outdated. I probably couldn't do anything other than walk if that were the case...

I worked out throughout my pregnancy, I just didn't push myself to hard or in the heat. But out of curiosity I measured my bpm while working out and found I felt pretty comfortable working out around 150-160 bpm while pregnant.

It is something to ask your doc about, but I think general consensus is be the healthiest you can be during the 2ww and, as others have said, you may notice some earlier fatigue/shortness of breath. Don't push yourself too hard if your body is telling you to decrease intensity.

Thanks everyone! I'd heard the heart rate of 140 was outdated, but haven't really found any hard and fast rules. I have heard the full range from friends from "don't work out at all" to "crossfit till labor" so it's hard to weed through all of the advice!

@Imabee: I was wondering this same thing! I went to the gym yesterday, and I was on the elliptical doing the hills and my heart rate was in the 160's the whole time pretty much....but I guess there's no reason to be nervous!

I was told to continue as much as I felt like doing. At 7 dpo I knew I was pregnant because I suddenly couldn't do my normal workout without being overtired and dizzy. I got a bfp at 8 dpo and the icky feeling lasted until just a little while ago (I'm 16 weeks now). But some people feel great the whole time so the key is just to listen to your body!

The 140 thing is really outdated. Once you get your BFP, you can continue to do all of those things as long as you aren't breathless. I did crossfit until 6 months when my doc said to stop because i had early contractions.

But anything goes during the 2ww - drink/eat/workout to your heart's content :)

I was told that I could exercise as normal. In the four weeks before my BFP, I had started a new exercise routine and was attending Barre classes three times a week while running three times a week.

I think the new consensus is that you can continue the work out you usually do, just don't do it harder than you've been doing it.

Also I think at the very beginning of conception there's probably nothing much you can do to help it/harm it... I went on vacation after conceiving (during tww pretty much), and I drank, ate whatever, sat in the hot tub a lot, etc...

I'm an avid gym goer and just started TTC. I typically go to spin class, boot camps, and cardio/weight lifting classes several times a week. I usually wear a monitor and my heart rate routinely climbs into the 170s.

I've read that for pregnancy, the recommended upper limit heart rate is 140, which seems really low to me. During a regular workout I am average a heart rate in the 150s-160s.

Does anyone have any experience or wisdom to share? I am most likely not pregnant yet but was not sure if there may be risk factors associated with high-impact and intense workouts while TTC.
