I would love it if I get paid to work out for an hour!! What I don't have is time, so if they are willing to let me take an hour out of working time to exercise, I'd be all for it!

I don't think employers should have any oversight in this way unless fitness is relevant to the job. (It's not for mine.) I would also highly prefer that health care in the US not be tied to employment but obviously that's not up to me.

I think it would be awesome, especially if they paid for the time! And if I could do a workout that wasn't always just running.

I know someone that worked for a company where if you worked ur a sociocultural amount per week (2 or 3 hours maybe?), you got your health insurance for free. So it wasn't required, but there was a big benefit for doing it.

If the job required it to fulfill the duties, then sure--like military, fire department, etc. For a bartender, I'm assuming that's about looks, and that's just all kinds of no.

I think it's really smart for employers to incentivize healthier habits. Like, my husband's firm just started a program where they use your fitbit or other health tracker data and make it a little competition, giving rewards to employees who take the most steps (dh has been training for a half-marathon so he's kicking butt, lol!). my old employer had a gym on the premises. but penalties for not working out if the job doesn't require physical work would seem all kinds of invasive/paternalistic.

I worked for a major corporation whose health plan requires us to work with a "health coach" or we would have a fee deducted from our paycheck for our benefits. My health coach decided I needed to lose weight, which was not really feasible considering that I was working 70+ hours per week there. I can see offering incentives, but not a penalty.

I used to work for National Defence and so most of my coworkers were military. They were required to work out for an hour a day as part of their work time so as a nice perk they was also extended to me. It was so great to be able to go to the gym and not then feel like I had to eat lunch at my desk every day.

That being said, I wouldn't be happy if I was told that I had to do it every day for appearance reasons.

@Foodnerd81: I agree that a job that requires you to work out for looks' sake alone would be tacky. But if it were to encourage you to work out, and pay you for doing so, for the physical and mental health benefits, I think we'd all jump on board.

My job actually offers up to 3 hours excused absence a week for exercise (which must be on work property, so at the gym or around the building). I think that's a good compromise!

Same as @NavyRN2012, except that we are given/encouraged to work out at least 3 hours a week. Some people take more, others less, but a high standard of physical fitness is part of the job. Our unit doesn't do group PT though, thankfully. I prefer to work out on my own, although I like some group sports and yoga.

To the original question, if physical fitness was required for my role that would be one thing- like fire fighters, military, etc. but if it was just for looks, ick. Also I suck at running so it would just be embarrassing.

Absolutely! Minus family responsibilities, if I could scoot out early for a paid workout- AWESOME!

My work has a very supportive employee heath program. We get $25 a month in gym dues and incentives for participating in various workout goals. We have to go 8 times a month to earn it, easy with the available childcare at the Y. The hardest part for me is just competing the paperwork for it.

@Foodnerd81: I like that idea. Motivation without it being a requirement.

But no, I would not work somewhere that required me to effing run every day. Not unless it was that or literally be unable to pay my bills. There is almost nothing in the world I hate more than running. I *can't* run for an hour. I can't run for 5 minutes. I would maybe consider a job that requires a walk or something similar. Even then I think it's an inappropriate requirement.

@Boogs: my dad worked for a company that paid for their gym membership IF they went a certain number of times per month. So my very non athletic dad went his required number of days because he is cheap, he got healthier, and the company had a healthier employee.

If it was part of the normal working day and they didn't care what type of exercise, I would LOVE it! I feel like it would actually be a really smart move for more companies because healthier employees probably cost less (health coverage) and might be overall healthier so take less sick time.

I was talking to a friend who used to work as a bartender, and she said that her boss used to require all the employees to go on a run for one hour a day! They would all go for a run together before the day started.

My first reaction was that this is totally ridiculous! I can't imagine being forced to work out by my employer. I was outraged on her behalf! It was so far out of my experience that at first, I couldn't even process what she was saying. There isn't great labor law protection here in the Philippines, so stuff like this happens way more than it should.

My second reaction took some time to develop, and it surprised me. I kind of wish that someone would force me to work out! If they paid me for the time, even better. I have a hard time motivating to workout, but love the results.

What about you: if your work required you to work out for an hour a day (and paid you for your time), would you do it?
