Do you live in a place that requires a furnace this time of year? I personally have a phlegmy cough for much of the winter because the furnaces dry out the air without being sick. Their LO could be the same way.

Your LO should be fine. I understand this kind of fear. It was important for me to get help with it so I didn't make myself sick from anxiety. You might consider that?

T is 11 mo and will randomly cough a week or more after she was actually sick. She always seems to have an icky nose. While I certainly understand why you were worried/upset I doubt the friends would have brought over a legit sick kid. My DD was in the PICU shortly after birth so I only allowed my mom for the first month- I get it. You did all you could short of having no visitors.

I think that regular hand washing and a little Lysol would be plenty in this situation. No need to isolate yourself and baby at all. DS2 got a little cold from his brother at 2 weeks and it was no big deal. A stuffy/runny nose. No fever or anything. And your baby will likely not get anything at all. Did you have anxiety before becoming pregnant? Have you discussed treatment options with you doctor?

I didn't find this out until recently as my mom knew I would have freaked out, but she came to visit us in the hospital the day my daughter was born. Apparently, right when she got home she started throwing up and got an awful stomach bug. She said she cried and was sick to her stomach but didn't want to tell me (unless the baby got sick, of course) because it would have made me worry. Anyways... The babe was fine. She also made it through the rest of her germy cousins visits without a cold. I would freak out and regret just about every outing / visit we did for the first couple of months. Between the disinfecting and nursing, it sounds like you are doing everything right! Try not to worry, it will be okay!

It's gonna be fine!

My lo1 has had colds off and on since lo2 was born in October. Mostly on. Lo2 is on his second or third cold now, second time running a fever. With the first we did have to be in the hospital for monitoring, but he was just fine, and he is formula fed! :P This one has been really bad on lo1 (as in, she's been sick long enough that if she doesn't keep improving like yesterday we may be admitted to the hospital to see if they missed something) and dh is pretty sick too so I'm hoping lo2 has it easy like me. It's hard not to worry though!

I think you'll be ok! You shouldn't have to stay in your bedroom for 16 hours, especially since your DH cleaned. My friend and her twins came over when DD was a week old. One of them started coughing. She never touched DD. She never got sick. Try not to stress yourself out too much if you can.

I know it's rough to have sickness brought to your house when you have such a new baby, but I really think that he'll be fine since your LO was tucked in to you the whole time and didn't come into direct contact with the child. Since your husband disinfected everything, I think you'll be fine.

I think it's more likely you or your husband will get sick fr that than baby. I also think it's more likely baby will get sick from one of you bringing germs home from the general public unless you're not leaving your house. You really can only do so much to control these things and I think you've gone above and beyond with the measures taken. I'm sure everything will be just fine. I understand your anxiety but I don't think the level of worrying is going to be very healthy long term and would encourage you to discuss with your doctor or therapist sooner rather than later.

I understand you've gone through a lot of struggle to get this baby, but I think your reaction is probably a little overblown. You don't need to hide in your bedroom, cold germs can't live on surfaces for that long. I wouldn't even think that the child was sick, 2 coughs really isn't anything.

E is 2.5 and constantly sick (thanks daycare) but I still feel furious when someone brings a sick child into my house! Its just inconsiderate. From what you've said, though, I don't think the kid is properly sick - those coughs can last for weeks after a cold - and I'm sure your LO will be fine.

I specifically asked the ped yesterday about visiting family who are getting over being sick. She said LO should be fine being in the same room as people with a cold, and I just shouldn't let anyone who is actively sick hold her.

LO (now nine weeks) has also survived DH getting a cold, my 103 degree fever, and my godmother visiting in the hospital and then promptly coming down with the flu, all without getting sick herself. I never remember to even ask anyone to wash their hands before holding her. I just rely on breastfeeding and her developing immune system to protect her, and so far it's working!

I totally would have reacted the same way when my son as small, it's a normal reaction, I think.

One of my SILs has three kids, and at least one of them is sick at any point in time, without fail. She's basically said if she stays at home when one is sick, she'd never be able to leave the house, so she takes as many precautions as she can, but sometimes, she doesn't know they're sick until they've exhibited symptoms and it might be too late.

I wouldn't be too concerned. I would trust that your friends wouldn't have stayed if their toddler was that sick. I had my fourth baby 8 weeks ago, my oldest has had a runny nose and a cough for awhile now, and even though she has coughed near the baby many times, he hasn't gotten it yet. Nursing is great and will help a lot, but you shouldn't be too worried.

I had strep throat when DS was really little. Not much I could do about keeping him away from me since I was his food source, but I am sure the nursing on demand helped us, since he didn't get sick.

It sounds like you guys took every precaution. It's very unlikely that your LO will get sick, but since you are going to the doctor anyway, feel free to mention it. Otherwise, I'd relax and enjoy this precious time with your newborn. They grow up so fast.

I'm sorry this happened! In my experience, it's really normal for toddlers in particular to have lingering coughs when getting over a cold. My LO still had a few gross coughs last week but hadn't had a fever in a week in a half. I would try not to worry.

I was very nervous about visitors as well when my son was brand new. My nephew visited when my son was less than two weeks old, and he was sick. I spoke to the nurse at our pediatrician's office and she said as long as the sick kid is at least two-three feet away, any coughing shouldn't be contagious. You said 6 feet, so I"m guessing your baby is going to be just fine. When my nephew left we disinfected every surface, too. FWIW my son stayed completely healthy during and after the visit. Fingers crossed for you!

LO1 had two awful stomach bugs within LO2's first month of life and DH had just started a new job, so no paternity leave (he made client phone calls from the hospital). LO2 never got sick, and has only really been sick twice since (now 7.5 months) while DS1 has been sick quite a few (thanks, preschool). And DS1, who we basically lysoled every day ;) got RSV at 3 months. It's all a crap shoot. But I really wouldn't worry.

I think the fact that the toddler only coughed twice is a good sign. But disinfecting was still a good idea! I hope he doesn't get anything. Sometimes those coughs linger and the kiddo isn't even sick anymore. Our friends came over to meet our baby and their two year old puked in the car en route. That in itself I could have explained to myself as carsickness but then she mentioned she had puked the night before! I was so freaked out and felt stiff and awkward the whole visit. And my dh gave her one of the baby's stuffed animals to play with and I immediately stuck it in the washer on extra hot the second they left... Not like baby was gonna play with it for months or anything! My son never got sick by the way and I totally went dh around th house sanitizing after they left!
