@Cherrybee: I think I'm going to CIO for the first feed. Not sure about the early morning feed yet.

@rahlyrah: How are you going to go about cutting the night feeds? Are you going to gradually reduce them somehow or do CIO straight away? I really need to sleep train E but she still eats 1-2 times per night like your LO. I don't know what to do for the best!

If I'm reading this right, it looks like he's getting 26oz that you can count, plus whatever you breastfeed. It's likely he's getting close to 30 which is great!

My lO has been STTN since 3 months. His last feed is around 7:30-8pm, and he wakes up around 7:30am. This has been the same from the time he was 3 months old, drinking 18ish oz a day, to now, where he drinks 28-30oz (plus solids).

I agree that at this stage eating at night is just habit - he doesn't technically need it, especially since it seems he's eating well. You're doing a great job, don't worry!

@rahlyrah: If you're worried about his intake, and are fine with the wake ups, I would just keep going with it? I honestly believe lots of LOs are *genuinely* hungry at night; mine nursed 1x until 9 months when he dropped it on his own. I would also cut the earlier one first, though, gradually decreasing ounces or limiting him to one side if nursing.

I agree with others that if you cut a nightfeed you will see intake go up during the day.

I would cut the early (11-2) feed first and once he has the hang of it, cut the 2nd feed (which I definitely still consider middle of the night because 5am is NOT an acceptable wake up time in my book! ). The 5am feed will also probably be harder to cut out and you may just feel like it's easier to feed him to get more sleep rather than endure CIO. Whatever you do though, do not get him up for the day at 5am!

@rahlyrah: Sounds like enough to me. I also wouldn't count 5 am as a night feed. C wakes between 5-7 am for a bottle, then goes back to bed for awhile. I consider that time after he wakes a long morning nap ;)

C drinks around 30-34 oz, but he's not getting breastmilk as well. We also do two solid meals a day.

@rahlyrah: that's plenty either way :) and to me 5am is definitely still night (although LO sometimes thinks it's party time!)

@Smurfette: Good to know! B used to STTN as well. Like R, teething sent our world into disarray! He also used to eat a lot more during the day as well.

I think we are going to have to bite the bullet and CIO. So not looking forward to it!

I think it sounds plenty. My pedi said the same thing at R's 6 month appointment. Told us to CIO (we were ok with it and had already sleep trained once and she regressed due to teething). She actually started eating better during the day. I should add that R had STTN before 6 months so we knew she could go all night.
She would sleep 7-6 no problem. Now she is up at 5 but we don't get her till 6 unless she starts crying hysterics before then.

@rahlyrah: I think he's getting enough. R drinks 24 oz. of formula a day, one solids "meal" and one nursing session.

@hilsy85: 26 if you include the early morning feeding. Does 5am count as a "night feeding?"

So it sounds like he gets around 26 oz formula? That sounds like plenty! Not to mention, you want him to eat MORE during the day and less at night. I would just do it gradually.

Also, if he does start STTN, I would not count on him going 12 hours :) My LO does 7-6, but it was 7-5:30 for a while!

When you cut night feedings, they do start to stock up during the day and eat more. Plus, after 6 months, I feel like Cs intake dropped anyway.

But yeah, you drop one feeding at a time and let then adjust to the changes gradually.

At LO's 6 month appointment, the pedi advised that we cut out his 2 night feedings. She said at this point he should STTN and is waking out of habit, not hunger.

However, since he started teething (and solids) he isn't eating as much and I worry he isn't getting enough formula during the day to eliminate the night feedings.

Today, this is how our schedule went:

5:00- 5 oz + BF (technically a night feeding?)
8:30- BF + 4 oz formula
10:30- 5 oz formula
1:00- 4 oz formula
3:00- 2.5 oz formula ( we were out and he was too distracted to eat more)
4:30- BF, solids, 1 oz of formula
At bedtime he usually eats 5 oz.

Does this seem like enough? The problem is, I have no idea how much he gets when he BFs (my supply is really low).

He is in bed between 7 & 7:30. Can he really go to 7 (he sometimes sleeps until 8) without any feedings? He usually eats between 11-2 and 3-5. Do you cut out both at once or start by cutting out the first feeding and then eventually phasing out the second?

This is stressing me out!

ETA: He usually has a 2nd meal of solids. Also, he is a big boy (28.5 inches and 19.5 pounds).
