My LO won't drink cows milk either so I make her smoothies. I put one yo-baby yogurt, some fruit (banana, blueberries, or peaches etc.) and a good bit of whole milk in the blender. She devours it throughout the day. I offer it at breakfast and after naps as snacks. Maybe try that?

Ok thanks everyone! I will try and not offer her any alternatives and hope that she eats more of a variety. I think if I offer less snacks between meals that will help too.

I think it's normal. C started around a year and is still going doing this. I think it's a control issue. Toddlers only have control over very few things in their lives, what goes in their mouths is one of them.

We dont offer alternatives either.

Not to trouble you , but my son is still going through a picky phase. He eats maybe five things? Totally normal, it is how some kids exert control.

DS was really, really bad and so picky! We just fed him the meals we knew he liked for a few weeks and slowly introduced one new item per week after that. It took a long time but by 2, he was eating a lot of veggies and fruit at every meal.

@Bao: I'm reading this book right now http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/111830859X and really like it. It basically suggests what @BabyBoecksMom said to keep offering a variety if healthy options and not fret if they only eat some of it. I grew up super super picky and am trying to avoid that for my son; I think it be becomes a vicious cycle of letting a kid eat less nutritious stuff bc the parent is more concerned about getting them to eat at all an then the kid will only eat that stuff. My mom agrees that's what happened with me and I can see it happening with my niece. I know pickiness is normal developmentally but I'm hoping thy book I linked will give me some preemptive strategies!

At lo's 12 month appointment a few days ago the nurse told me that around this time is when they tend to become fussier about foods. She explained it that food was one of the few things babies can control. So I would say its normal! Hopefully the phase passes quickly for you!

@Bao: is she teething? My LO goes through phases of this too. Because of her low iron I'm etremely concern about her leafy green intake. I make quiche and hide spinach in that. She loves soup so she can get nutrition from that. I also make green smoothies to get more vegetables in her.
When I make breakfast foods I only use oatmeal, wholewheat or buckwheat flour so it's more nutritionally dense.
LO used to be a carnivore but lately not so much. But she almost always eats meatballs. She will eat meat if I pound it then then bread with panko/bread crumbs. Tonight we made grilled pork chops and she didn't want the slices I cut for her but she would eat it off the whole chop. I find that true with any other bone in meat with her.

What are some things she does love?

@Bao: that's what we were told to do. Trust me, I know it's easier said than done! Sometimes we'll give in if she's throwing a huge fit and beyond reasoning... But it will usually be a piece of fruit from the fruit bowl or a pouch. If she comes back, we only offer her the rest of her meal.

Totally normal!! Our pediatrician said she'll eat when she's hungry, but not to sacrifice nutrition just to make sure she eats. You want to make the calories she is eating count. Eventually she'll eat what you're having once she sees you eating it, but the amout that they eat right now goes way down. He also said that they can go a few days without eating much, but they will eat more every few days to make up for it. So, that's when we maximize the fruit and veggies.

@Bao: I honestly think it's normal. My A would only eat fruit until sometime last week. I discovered if I put marinara sauce on veggies and meat she would eat it. She probably had marinara sauce 5 times last week!

No advice since my LO is still cooking, but wanted to let you know I was this bad (or worse) growing up. I only ate pasta with butter (no sauce), yellow american cheese, green grapes, carrots sometimes, applesauce sometimes, and plain pizza. Pretty much that's it. I grew to like a few things but was SUPER picky through college (didn't eat any MEAT until junior year!!!) but now I do ok. I would be considered "normal" but DH is a chef so he gets on me a lot! My mom was always so upset and talking to my doctor about it, but I somehow made it! Not sure if that helps to know but it is probably more common than you think. I hope for her sake (and yours) though that it's just a phase! Good luck mama!

LO is 12 months old and has recently turned into a very picky eater. I feel like she's not getting everything she needs because she refuses so much. She won't drink cows milk (we are weaning from nursing), won't eat cheese, meat or most fruits. She will eat a few types of veggies, pasta, yogurt, cereal and oatmeal. I'm embarrassed to say some of the things I let her eat just so I know she has a full belly.

Does anyone have any tips? Should I be concerned or is this normal for her age?
