@Corduroy: I am so sorry you are feeling sick. And I think you won't regret backing out. I'm so curious what your job is now!

(But I confess, the difficult patient part reminded me of Elaine getting "flagged" in her medical chart on Seinfeld. :silly:
Doc: "Oh, uh, I'll erase it."
Elaine: "You're writing in PEN!")

I figured I would update in case anyone searches the boards later. My doctor was less than impressed with my tasting & spitting plan. Even though the doctor had zero information about listeria growth, safe is better than sorry. DH was at the appointment and made me promise not to taste anymore. The doctor was equally unimpressed with my plan for four exhausting days of travel/work. I'm pretty sure there's a note in my file about being a difficult patient.

After a pretty awful week 8 that included a migraine and another day of garbage can holding nausea I decided that making the trip was a bad idea. Now I've come to find out that I was sick on top of the morning sickness last week. I've actually felt pretty good the last few days. If I keep feeling good the rest of the week I'm going to feel awful about backing out. Of course thats easy to say from the couch waiting for my unisom to kick in. I'm sure I wouldn't be feeling so good traveling without enough down time to even take unisom.

@Adira: Yes, but that is based on my plans to just taste and spit (not consume). I could say I'm not tasting but then I have to give up all my projects that I worked so hard to get. I did a lot of research on listeria growth rates and I'm pretty comfortable with that plan for now. I'll talk to my doctor about it at my first appointment and re-evaluate if they have any new information.

@Corduroy: Are you still being expected to taste test foods you're not supposed to have while pregnant?

I told my boss and he managed to eek out a "congratulations" so it went much better than I anticipated. My boss is going to send someone with me on the trip as a backup. That way if I get sick we don't lose the production time and investment.

@Corduroy: I would tell him, including the symptoms. I have HG, and had to tell HR super early because I was a wreck.

You'll make the travel work if you have to because sometimes as much as it sucks, we just have to do what we have to do. You shouldn't be tasting products that may not be safe for pregnant women to consume. So, I'd tell him so you are excused from doing that...

at 9 weeks i was a disaster, even with medication. i can't imagine doing all that driving/working/eating.... even if the foods were safe for you to eat! i'd definitely tell him.

My gut reaction isn't with the travel but the fact that you're having to taste foods that pregnant people can't eat. I would definitely say something because of that.

The travel thing I would probably just suck it up and deal with it (with the help of zofran), but the food would be a deal breaker. I think you need to say something.

I would def tell your boss for you & your baby's health and safety! I told my boss super early on too, def by 8 weeks, b/c I was so miserable at work and he thought I had a problem either with him or my job! It made things soo much better that he understood why I was so miserable and he was super supportive and left me alone!

I would either tell him or call your doctor for Zofran (which doesn't make you drowsy).

I would not comment on your symptoms, but instead focus on the fact that due to the pregnancy you cannot taste the food. Symptoms come and go, but a food restriction does not.

I would tell him. And I would let him know that you have concerns with traveling at that time and also with consuming those foods.

I have an upcoming business trip in two weeks that I've been dreading. It falls at 9 weeks. It's two days of travel (5 hour flights and three hours of driving) and one day of working in a production plant. Normally none of this would phase me but I am exhausted and worrying about feeling worse. I'm worried that if I take the unisom I need not to vomit I'll be too tired to work and drive. If I don't I may be too sick to work. I felt really terrible at 9 weeks with my last pregnancy. Anything I ate made me dizzy because all the blood went to my stomach.

Then there's the whole purpose of the trip. To taste products that pregnant women can't eat. That's the whole focus of my job right now. I've been spitting which I think is acceptable but I don't know how he will feel. This has been my strategy so far.

I really don't want to tell the boss before I've seen a heartbeat but that will be just a few days before the trip. I'm leaning towards telling. Do I mention the early pregnancy symptom concerns or just the tasting concerns and my planned modifications.
