@Revel: I have pneumonia in college and never once spiked a fever, had a cough, or sounded wheezy. I just felt dizzy and tired, and then passed out at work. Only diagnosed with a chest xray.

@Revel: I am so glad you got good (non scary!) answers, and that your LO is going to make a full recovery! It's so important to ask all the questions and advocate as best possible for your child, and that's not easy to do.

@Revel: I didn't see this yesterday, but I'm so glad to hear that the ped doesn't think it's anything more serious. I would have been thinking the same thing as you. I hope the antibiotics kick whatever she has going on.

@LovelyPlum: @Revel: He is responding well to chemo. He is in the hardest cycle right now. Treatment will end in 2018. Luckily, the type he has is the one with the highest cure rate.

@LovelyPlum: Thank you so much! We've been incredibly lucky that at 2.5 this is her first ear infection, so I guess I didn't know how much it would affect her.

@avivoca: You know where my mind was going! I had definitely read those symptoms. Rationally because her gait is fine and she is doing all of her normal stuff at home (jumping, running "yoga") it makes sense that it affected her on longer walks bc she just didn't feel well, but I will definitely continue to watch and be sure she is back to normal with her activity once she's been on the antibiotics for a few days.

ETA: I hope that Tucker is well now, how terrifying!

@Revel: I'm glad you have an answer! H's cousin Tucker stopped walking because his legs hurt and they found out he has leukemia (there were other signs like the bruising and inability to clot), so when kids stop walking it scares me.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas and support yesterday. This is such a great community!

Of course LO seemed to be more energetic and herself by yesterday afternoon when we got to the ped, as is always the case. I saw one of my favorite doctors at our practice. Turns out she has a bad ear infection - they saw something last Friday but said it wasn't a full on infection then.

Pulse ox was good and her breathing sounded fine to the ped. I asked about pneumonia and she said she has been seeing a lot of walking pneumonia. She said it is tough to diagnose in little kids bc they won't take a big breath to hear it - only way is the chest xray as you all said. She did not recommend the chest xray because LO otherwise seems OK and she felt it was invasive. She said the antibiotic course for her ear would be what they would prescribe anyways for pneumonia, so we left it at that for now. She also said blood work would be low on her list of things she would suggest right now - I'm assuming under the expectation that the antibiotics will have an effect and she'll be back to normal.

@avivoca: regarding her walking, she doesn't say anything hurts and of course by last night was back to going up and down stairs. She also has been running and jumping around the house as usual - it is mostly wanting to be carried on short walks outside. Ped suggested it was related to the fact that she doesn't feel well and has been getting such poor sleep.

Also trying some zyrtec to see if the eye rubbing and coughing may be allergy related.

So! Not a very dramatic resolution after all my concern yesterday, but I feel good about our plan and will follow up if she doesn't improve or gets worse on the antibiotics. She did sleep better last night and her color looks a little improved this morning although not 100%.

I was going to chime in and say pneumonia as well? My son has pneumonia/bronchiolitis last fall and he only had a slight temperature when we were in the ER with him and it went away after one dose of Tylenol and did not return.

@Ms. RV: @pwnstar: @T.H.O.U.: Thanks for all the tips. Our appointment is in the late afternoon today so I suppose depending on how the ped assesses her (if non emergency) I might try to take her tomorrow morning to outpatient, maybe at the children's hospital if that's an option for us.

I also thought pnuemonia. The first time I had it it took several weeks to be able to hear any fluid in my lungs but the xray revealed it.

@jh524: @LovelyPlum: No test for RSV. Interesting that everyone thinks pneumonia. I wonder if that could have been the illness she had 5 weeks ago and she fought it off partly but now it's lingered. The ped last week just assumed asthma I think bc of her history but didn’t order any tests.

@Revel: she should be checked for pneumonia...If it went into her chest . My 2.5 has croup again and I really try to get him to cough and get all that crap out. Was she put on a antibiotic? The fact that it was croup and now she's still coughing and not acting herself would raise my alarms. Hope you find out what it is so she can feel better ASAP!!!

@LovelyPlum: Thank you. I will definitely update. The color/tiredness is the most strange symptom for sure. She doesn't exactly look sick but not quite right. Her pulse ox has always been fine when they've checked it at the ped, and her breathing doesn't seem labored so it's tough to say if that's an issue.

Oh goodness, that sounds scary :( The color being off is most suspect to me. It sounds like she's not getting enough oxygen, almost? I know RSV is going around, but I'm not sure what the more mild symptoms look like.

Good luck, and keep us updated. I hope she feels much better very soon.

Haven't been on in ages but could use some support on this one. LO is 2.5 and has been very healthy. She had what we thought was croup about 5 weeks ago (fever/barky cough) and got better after a few days but the cough lingered. She was a bit better and then seemed to get worse, possibly picked up another upper respiratory thing.

We saw the ped last week about the cough because she had used an albuterol inhaler last fall (suspected reactive airway/cough variant asthma although they don't diagnose in kids her age) and she's using the albuterol and steroid inhaler now but we're not seeing any improvement.

She also seems tired and her color is off. She is asking to be carried a lot more although her movement seems fine and she doesn't seem short of breath.

We have a follow up with our ped this afternoon and I'm kind of stumped. Wondering if it could be allergies, because throughout this she's had a runny nose and her eyes seem itchy/red.

I think I'm going to ask for blood work even if it is not suggested because I'm wondering about anemia or (god forbid) something more serious like cancer or leukemia. I know I'm probably jumping to conclusions but it's so hard not to worry.

I know the internet can't diagnose, but any of this ring a bell to anyone?
