My husband technically qualifies as disabled (we've never pursued it) because he was in an accident that squished his spine as a child. Right before we had the baby he missed a week of work because of his back injury. His doctor told him to take frequent short walks. The man never exercises. When the baby came dh had to take over walking the dog and he hasn't had a missed day of work since. The dog forces him to walk everyday. After reading your comment I researched this and it is all very legitimate and our dog is now dh's official companion animal and she is with us for good :) seriously, thank you. Second, I manage an affordable housing community. There are three classifications for animals in apartments. Pets, which are subject to pet rules and restrictions, service animals, which are certified and trained to assist disabled individuals, and companion animals, which require a doctor's note stating the animal is medically necessary for companion purposes. Service and companion animals are considered an accommodation, are protected by federal law and are not subject to pet restrictions. Since your pup was with you during through the difficulties of being without a home, I would imagine you could find a doctor to write a companion animal note. </p>
