Thanks for the tips guys!

Car naps are rare, but we had to go to the city and travel during nap time so it was the only option.
Usually he naps at 1pm in his crib. He usually goes down for the night between 730-8 (lately closer to 730 and it's been working well for us) but last night he screamed on and off until 840.

We bumped bedtime to 730 a couple weeks ago and that's when he was consistently sleeping until 630 or 7. The past few mornings had us questioning the 730 bedtime, but maybe it's just a fluke (we do have colds).

Also. He did finally fall back to sleep for another 45 mins!

I'd consider moving up bedtime. My daughter (almost 3) has always been a terrible napper, but she sleeps 7pm-6:30am pretty consistently. On days that she skips her nap completely she will be asleep by 6:30pm.
I have to lie down with my daughter until she falls asleep to get her to nap at all. I have always tried to avoid car naps unless its the only option, and instead plan our day around getting home in time for nap (which sucks- but my daughter has always done best with pretty careful routines).

Try making bedtime half an hour earlier? Other than that I think all that works is going in and saying, calmly, it's still sleep time, and then going back out. It really helps to have nap at the same time and in the same place every day, too.

Tylenol? My DS has been teething on and off. When he's overtired and cranky but not sleeping I give him Tylenol and get one decent nap. But it's not a long term solution. But if you think he's overtired and needs a reset that might work.

Eta- I've found that I have to put him down earlier to get longer naps. If I wait till he is visibly tired, or push him too late, he takes shorter naps. Finding the perfect time is hard though.

My son has always been a freaking horrible napper. 30 minutes on the dot for every single nap until he was 1. Then they were like an hour and a half after letting him CIO when he woke up too early and getting him on one nap a day.

This summer he had a good stretch where he would nap two ish hours. We spent every morning getting him to the beach or park to exhaust him and it worked.

Now it's winter and freezing and his naps suck so bad. Monday no nap. Tuesday 1 hour car nap. Wednesday 30 minute nap. Yesterday one hour. Today 28 minutes. Also he woke up at 530 today after going to bed at 840 last night. How is this normal?! 9 hours of night sleep plus a 30 minute nap.
I'm literally ignoring him right now praying he falls back to sleep. I'm so sick and need a break so badly.
When your kid is up for 15 hours a day and naps for less then 1 hour in the middle of Canadian winter..it makes for the longest days ever :(

Does anyone have any tips on helping a 23 month old nap longer? I am so not ready to give up naps. He is so busy and I just need a freaking break to sit down in the middle of the day.

The day he skipped nap I thought maybe if he slept extra long at night it would be ok if he started skipping naps some days. But no. He slept until 530 that day too (he had been sleeping until 630-7 recently).

Help :(
