My husband made dinner last night to give me a night off and it was glorious... so I'm totally on board that a part-time chef would be amazing! I still enjoy cooking though so I wouldn't want to totally hand over my kitchen.

I don't think this is something I'd ever consider. DH and I cook together 75% of the time, and it's something we enjoy. Our meals are pretty good and we get a lot of satisfaction from it! But I would LOVE a weekly cleaning lady...our cleaning lady only comes once a month!

Well, it would definitely help me to eat healthier, but it wouldn't save me too much time since I'm not much of a cook anyway! Maybe 10%? I would say more but the cost would be having to a) pay them and b) have them around and schedule based on that.

Yes! so much! Because we don't buy processed food I have to make everything from scratch. I feel like I spend so much time of every day figuring out what to make, cooking and doing dishes.

If I had a chef that would definitely make things a little easier. I love to cook and wouldn't mind doing all the meals, if I didn't have to worry about anything else.

I wouldn't mind being someone else's chef if I got paid for it :)

Everything would most likely be easier if you didn't have to worry about cooking, dishes, meal planning etc., but it is fun to go into the kitchen and create something yummy and creative. Cooking is an art form, in my opinion, and I get some pleasure out of cooking, so I probably wouldn't hire one, unless I could not do the cooking, or if @coco bee got tired of cooking and I couldn't take over.... and we had the money :)

@zippylef: agreed. I despise dishes with a passion. DH, thankfully, does them about half the time.

It all depends. I would want a chef that would make very healthy meals - gluten free, full of fresh produce, limited grains etc. But I probably wouldn't want a chef 7 days a week, maybe 4 or 5? I actually don't mind cooking in general, but meal planning is so time consuming and frustrating, and I as well hate the cleanup.

And probably just for dinner. I would be fine doing breakfasts and lunches on my own.

I think I would rather have a housecleaner though, so it would improve my quality of life by 25%... I'd still have to clean my house.

We both love cooking and are good cooks, so I would never want an in-home chef. I can't wait to start cooking with LO!

Every once in a while it would be awesome to have a dirty dish fairy; but we clean dishes as we cook which means there are only a few dishes to do after dinner.

My FIL has one and it's so wonderful to not have to worry about what to make, time to make it, time to clean up after it. In the past when DH or I have been sick she will even cook for us and send dinner over....so nice!
I think I'd miss cooking, but definitely not the cleaning and the grocery shopping. There is also something familiar and romantic about cooking for someone that I think gets lost. For the past few years (since I've been in Canada) we've hired caterers for Thanksgiving and while the food is amazing, it's not the same as how my mom would have made it. I want our kids to have favorite recipes and memories that their mom (ME!) made for them.

I think this would make a world of a difference in my household. I'm not a good cook at all and often don't cook. My husband is busy at work. The process of preparing meals take up a lot of time from shopping to prepping to actually cooking it. Somehow I have two left feet in the kitchen or something. I'd love to have someone prepare thoughtful, creative, healthy and nutritious for our family. It all starts with what you put in your stomach.

I think think that could be very helpful, but not necessary all the time. At the moment, I have been really stretched thin to cook good meals on the days that I do not feel that well since I am pregnant. But before I got pregnant again, I was in a good groove and didn't feel like I needed help.

I do pay my cleaner to cook one meal a week which is a great help. She just cooks whatever she wants and it is mostly good but I do prefer my own cooking.

As time consuming as cooking is.... I really don't think id want a chef. I enjoy cooking. When I cook I turn on my show tunes and dance around the kitchen and have fun with it. I started doing this with my mom, and I hope my lo does it with me too.

Plus, it makes me feel good about myself when we sit down for a meal that ive worked hard on.

my parents have had cooks at home for quite some time, so i still go home about once a week to eat with the family. the two cooks (they alternate days) each like me, so they usually cook something extra special when they know i'm joining them for dinner.

it's kind of great, because everyone gets to hang out in the afternoon before dinner and just relax after dinner. the cooks do most of the daily grocery shopping like produce and meat, while the bulk items (oil, flour, etc.) are purchased by the family. all the dishes get piled into the sink after dinner for the cooks to clean the next day.

it sounds like you may be seriously thinking about this, so i wanted to add that it's not all glamorous though. you might miss out on teaching your kids how to cook. my DH can't understand how often i burn things or otherwise mess up in the kitchen. and i have only 2 family recipes that i learned from my mom which is kinda sad.

also, having a personal chef comes with all the "perks" of having an employee. it's probably just as hard to find a good one as it is to find a good nanny. you'd need to decide how involved you want to be in menu planning. if you leave it to the cook, would they just end up rotating the same 10 meals, or would they be more seasonal and inventive? would they be willing to learn your family's ethnic dishes to throw into the mix? would they work holidays like labor day when the house will be busy with everyone home for all 3 meals; and especially thanksgiving when there would be more dishes and possibly more people? would they get paid vacation days when you're out of town?

that was probably a more involved response than you expected, but it's something i've thought about since moving out and having to cook (i.e. burn things) on my own.

To not have to worry about meals would make my life significantly easier, especially since as a diabetic I do have to worry about what goes into the foods I eat. I don't know that I could put a percentage on how improved it would be, maybe 10-20% if it included all meals, included lunchs taken to work, etc.

My mom runs a B&B, so when we visited her in the Philippines she had her staff prepare us 3 meals a day. It was pretty glorious! Bee mentioned that having a full-time chef would improve her quality of life quite a bit... it got me thinking about chefs.

We are so far from being able to afford a chef that it's ridiculous. But now that I know how much it would improve Mrs. Bee's quality of life, I want to work towards that goal. Maybe in a few years, it will be possible? Either that or I have to get serious about learning to cook.

Would having a fulltime chef improve your quality of life? If so, by how much... 20%? 5%? 100%?
