@runsyellowlites: I read it as if the pregnancy would cause you issues, I didn't really think about the kiddo having issues, but still didn't get the point haha

@babyjmama: If I understand correctly these health issues would be for you & your DH, not the possible biologically children you have.... so any adopted children would have the same consequence of possibly loosing their parent at a relatively young age.

That's right. right?

Maybe? I have a genetic heart condition that can cause sudden, unexplained heart attacks. They were very afraid something was going to happen when I went into labor.

We were lucky this time around. It will be something to consider next time.

I think if there weren't a correlation between having the children and the condition we would still have the same number we planned on.

The way I see it, my dad had whipple and ultimately passed away a year later in his mid fifties. My siblings were a great comfort to me during that time and I think we were all a comfort to him as well. Having fewer of us to lean on during that stressful time would not have made it easier, in fact I think having a lot of people to pick of the slack probably helped.

If having more kids would exacerbate the issue directly (not indirectly like stress of raising them) then we would adopt instead.

We've not decided whether or not we will have #2, but if there were health issues I think we would both agree that adoption would be the way to go. So many amazing babies are out there and we wouldn't see it as a 'backup plan', our family is our family...blood or not :)

If it was a genetic condition, I may consider not having more children. Otherwise I would have the number of children I had planned on having. Life threatening surgery does not necessarily mean life ending and with medical advancements it may not be as serious as it is now. I wouldn't want to regret not living my life to its fullest.

If you had a medical problem or diagnosis that you know cause you to have life-threatening surgery later in life (in your 50's - 70's), would this make you reconsider the amount of kids you have?
