@googly-eyes: Mine has extras that it offers too, but never had any pushed on me or even approached with them aside from the occasional sign on the wall or service explanation on their website.

Thank you all for your input! I actually think that there are valid non-life/death-situation reasons for c-sections, but I guess it came across as so casual to me. I think I'll just keep it on the list for now and we where I end up. I could end up just going back to my old OBGYN but I now have PPO and want to see what's out there.

@Cole: Eeek this place has some extras as well. We'll see, I guess.

It wouldn't be a red flag for me at all. My doctor performed my c-section "upon request" (aka, it wasn't absolutely medically necessary at the time I had it done, but there was thought and medical consideration put into the decision) but had been very vocally 100% supportive of ANY type of labor I wanted from my first appointment until the time we went into the OR, and most of her patients deliver vaginally. The hospital she is connected with, that I delivered at, is extremely pro-natural birth and had alternative pain management certified L&D nurses on all shifts. They also have no issue with c-sections.

This is all to say that because a doctor is willing to work with patients on c-sections outside of life and death situations doesn't have to mean they are anti-vaginal birth and won't advocate for the birth you want. I would meet with them if you otherwise like them.

I was put off by an ob/gyn office that offered cosmetic dermatologic procedures (botox, skin resurfacing etc), it wasn't like they even had a dermatologist on staff. They were super convenient though so I made an appointment anyway. I was really unimpressed, they were rushed, over scheduled, pushed lots of "extras" and it just made me feel like they were in it for the money. So, I would give them a try but ask around and see if anyone else has used them and maybe ask a few more questions than you might otherwise.

nope. i'd look into it anyway if i thought it seemed good otherwise. i'd specifically ask the doctor questions about his/her views on c-sections on the first visit and see what his/her response was. then i'd make a decision after that. sometimes websites aren't designed with that much thought behind them.

I would be a little turned off, but if they have good reviews I think they're worth trying out. Make an appointment to see how you feel about the practice in person. I don't think having it on their website is a deal breaker, but find a Dr who understands what you want and supports your decisions.

It's probably on the website to deter a ton of phone calls. Wouldn't think twice, honestly. Who knows what someone's request is. It's more important to me that my dr supports me as understands that *I* am not requesting a c section but I don't care if someone else does. Who knows their reason

I don't know that I'd totally count the doc out but this would make me nervous. I'd want to meet with him/her and specifically ask how supportive they are of avoiding interventions (and then sort of read between the lines because I think they'll all say they are supportive but sometimes you can tell they don't really see the point).

I would just make it a point to specifically ask if c-sections are elective or more so preffered. I would want to know that the doctor won't mind me being in labor for a long time as long as baby and I were not in any real danger. The hospital I delivered at was pushing for a c-section after 24 hours but my doctor knew how badly I didn't want one and fought for me. I was able to have a vaginal delivery after 36 hours of labor. Not fun times, but glad I didn't have to fight the hospital on my own. :)

yes, for me it would be. c-sections are a great thing when necessary, but i would be concerned that someone that advertises that they perform them 'upon request' trivializes interventions & doesn't fully appreciate when interventions are medically necessary vs. a convenience for the patient or dr (like when you're in labor & there's somewhere they want to be, might speed up their decision to perform a section because it's not viewed as a big deal).

I may be getting ahead of myself here as we are just starting to ttc but I'm looking at OBGYN doctors in our area and one of the practices I'm looking at seemed really good, until I came to a page where it talked about all the tests they can do during your pregnancy and it said "c section upon request." I know a lot of doctors seem to do this, and I'm not anti-c-section (although I certainly won't be asking for one!), but to use it as a selling point seemed odd. They had great reviews but that's not everything either...

Thoughts?
