@looch: Ha, exactly...it's confusing!

I don't think someone going by his/her middle name is in and of itself confusing, but the OP wants to put two names together to make one name. That's where it gets confusing. It would be like if I wanted to name my son after Bret Michaels so I named him Joseph BretMichaels LastName, then called him Bret.

Can I just say I am completely confused?

When I used to travel to Texas for work, it was pretty common that people went by their middle names, so a guy called Brett, for example, was really Joseph Brett LastName.

@Torchwood: I think what @MsLipGloss: was saying would be if your name is Elizabeth MaryAnn Smith. You could go back Elizabeth, Liz, Beth, MaryAnn, etc. without any confusion. But if you chose to go by Mary only, then you'd have to explain that you go by only a part of your middle name. If that makes sense?

Is there some way to use a part of the name you like instead, knowing where it originated from has meaning to you and DH? For example, there's a place Aquinnah that has meaning to DH and I. He would love to name a future daughter that but I won't allow it (possibly living in that area post-retirement, having to explain/spell it, etc.). I'm totally fine with Quinn though, knowing it still has a bit of a secret meaning to us.

@Torchwood: I think what differentiates the name you're considering from your friend and dad is that Michelle and Stephen are common single names with nicknames. You are taking it a step further by combining a character's first and last name into one name then using the first name as a nickname. To me it's not the same. I say it's your child and you can name her whatever you want, but it is going to be confusing for other people just as it's been confusing for all of us.

@Torchwood: Maybe strange isn't the right word . . . unconventional perhaps? And I don't think my post came out right . . . the explanation is confusing (especially in the scenario with RobertSusan as the middle name, but I got by Susie scenario), but the name itself not confusing/strange. If that makes sense?!

So is it confusing that my name is Elizabeth and I go by Liz or Beth? Most nicknames don't use a full name. ClaraOswin was not the best example, because it works as one name, whereas that does not.

@lawbee11: that's what I don't get too.

It's sounds awfully confusing for their nickname to be only half of their middle name. Why not just have their first name be their nickname. Seems like less hassle and confusion for the child. And Why does it have to be combined into one name? You can have 2 middle names.

I'm confused. So will she have a first name, and then the middle name is the two names put together that you believe people may recognize? And then she'll actually be called by only the first half of her middle name? Is there a reason you wouldn't just separate the two middle names and make one her first name? Or am I totally misunderstanding?

@Mrs Hedgehog: I actually love the name Inara!! Although it's spelled differently than pronounced which throws me off. However, if we have a boy his name will be Malcolm for family reasons, and it might be a liiiiittle crazy if we had a Malcom and an Inara.

@MsLipGloss: Agree with your point about artistic expression.

I guess I just don't understand why you have to combine the names as one middle name? Like in your example, why does it have to be [firstname] ClaraOswin Smith? Why can't it just be Clara Oswin Smith if she's going to go by Clara anyways? I can see it being a pain in the ass to have to explain, well I go by my middle name but not my entire middle name just part of it...I would find it annoying to have to explain that.

I have no idea since I don't know the name you're talking about! I think it's one of those things where it's hard to gauge unless we know the ACTUAL name, since different characters vary in "weirdness" of names, and their own popularity. Would you be open to a gold thread with it?

Our daughter's name is Effie. She's named after DH's late grandmother. Our friend reminded us that it's a character's name in the Hunger Games, Effie Trinkett. It bothered me a little that people would often say "OH FROM HUNGER GAMES?", probably because neither of us are fans of the books/movies. If we liked it, it would be a cool bonus. But while some people do say that, many who I mention it to say they didn't even make the connection. I consider "Effie" a somehwat out there name, so I'm not sure how "out there" yours really is!

I agree that you should name your child what you think fits best, HOWEVER, I really don't think parents should use the child's name to exercise their personal *artistic* expression . . . I just don't understand parents who saddle their children with *weird* names. It's an abuse of discretion in my book! I have no idea what you are planning to name your child, or if it would even be *weird*, but there are just some names that should stay in the *realm* in which they were created.

@Torchwood: Is the middle name just a regular name on it's own? Or is it a surname?

Like if you called your daughter Barbara Ella Smith people probably wouldn't put two and two together and think Barbarella! But if you called your kid (looking at your username) Martha Jones Smith it would be pretty obvious that you were going for the character name..... which is totally okay! But if that bothers you then, yeah, it's obvious. That said, I doubt that many people would know who, say, Gwen Cooper is - and especially not in 5 years when your LO starts school. Now if we're talking Katherine Janeway Smith, that's a character that's never going to fade away.....
