@evansjamie: just so you know, this house came with Asko appliances and we hated them. Seriously expensive hunks of junk! We have a Bosch dishwasher now and a Samsung washer dryer. Much happier!

If the fix doesn't work you can still successfully CD with a front loader. We have CD for 1 1/2 years, and we have had no build-up/repelling issues, and have never had to strip our diapers using our front loader, it is just a matter of getting the right wash routine, and my routine isn't at all complicated or excessively long :)

@StrawberryBee: Good luck! I hope that the part works and that you're able to do the upgrade you want someday. I had no idea that top-loading was better for CDing since it's not something we did, very glad other bees chimed in because that's very good info!

update!

Thank you to everyone who weighed in, I really appreciate it! I just purchased the part to hopefully fix it off of Amazon. We may still end up buying a new machine if this doesn't work, but I realized two things:

1. The old school machine we have now really is best for what we need right now (a washer to clean cloth dipes).

2. The best use of the utility room space is to stack two front load machines, as @wonderstruck suggested. However, front load machines would make CDing right now very difficult. To get a new washer now means getting a top load, and it seems silly to make a long term decision for a short term application.

Hopefully the new part will fix it and it'll last a few more years until we're out of cloth dipes and can upgrade both machines :).

I'd get a new one. I would be po'ed if we spent money on a part and then needed to buy another part and it still doesn't work/it broke again shortly after.

Is it possible to find one used?

@wonderstruck: thanks, I think that would be the only way to gain space! I want those shelves gone. Like, yesterday ;)

@woodentulip: @loveisstrange: thank you for your opinions on CD'ing and top load vs. front load! Definitely making me think twice. @woodentulip: how do you force it to empty?? I would love not to have to siphon the water out!

I visited Home Depot and Lowes today hoping that maybe they'd have a floor sample on clearance, but the only items they had were dryers (boo).

Front loaders make CDing WAY harder. The use of less water can really cause buildup and residue issues. If you're going to replace it, definitely get top loading machines.

So I dunno if this is too late...

Ours also broke while in the middle of a CD wash cycle! I learned then that you can force it to empty, which was handy, but still left me with a giant pile of poopy/pee soaked diapers.

We opted to fix it, and I am glad we did. Now that we have a front loader, I was never able to get the balance right for CD and we had to give it up. Sad day. I tried everything, asked for help all over, and it just didn't work. I <3 top loaders for CD!

@evansjamie: ooh, love the design! No, I really don't know much about appliance brands, except that people seemed to like this LG on a prior bee's post:

I could get this stacking pair out the door for $1300 through my company's purchase program:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/204102085?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=204102085&R=204102085#.UmwjgHB19yM

If anyone can think of a realistic way to reorganize the space, I'd be forever in your debt! This room is off of our kitchen btw, we have no basement or garage.

@swedishfish: DH has actually moved it because he took apart the washer last night, but it goes in this space.

So here's the thing: where the washer is? Yeah, that's the HVAC unit next to it. And the filter...the filter is BESIDE the washer. So you have to pull the washer forward and climb in behind it to change the filter. Needless to say, it doesn't happen as often as it should as a result.

So if we put a stacked unit back in there, then that means having to pull out two heavy appliances out to get to the filter. Not to mention moving the dryer vent.

Speaking of dryer vents, the wall that it's on is a shared wall with our attached twin neighbor. The vent actually travels the length of our powder room and living room to reach the outside. Can we say, 'fire hazard'? Awesome. Quite a few units in the neighborhood have had fires as a result.

So, we could stack two front loads at the front of the space (where the dryer goes now). Except that we'd have to move the pipe for the washer over (it's behind the current washer, where that black hose is in the first picture). And the dryer already sticks out 5 inches or so into the opening of the utility space. New machines are deeper. So we'd probably have to shimmy around them.

You can't do side by side because then a front load door can't open, because of where they put the pipe main.

Rawr. Don't even get me started on the ugly shelves ;).

Whoever designed it gets an F in functional spaces. Very tempting to get a stackable front load full size washer and dryer!

Our washer broke last night. In the middle of a cloth diaper cycle. Yay.

would you pay $88 for a part that may fix it (the washer came with the house and is probably 6 years old, typical top load with agitator), or buy a new one for $600?

Edit: DH thinks it's the timer since some of the contacts on it are burnt, but there's no guarantee that there isn't something else wrong. When you plug it in it initially makes clicking sounds, and then stops. The water is still in the barrel, and won't drain.
