Well I currently do a job that I really like -- college professor. There are a variety of jobs that I would be qualified that pay way more money than my current job, but I don't think I'd find them fulfilling.

@cmomma17: that was me at my last job and I'm in a new job now and can finally say 'ithat didn't know how bad it was until I was gone...' thank goodness I can now! I was lucky and got higher pay and a better work environment though...very rare!

I have a difficult situation currently bc DH is a student and we live on one income. I have to make enough for us to survive..that being said, id take less pay with a happy environment any day (as long as we can pay the bills!)

There is SO much more to a job than pay. I always learn the hard way. :( Of course if circumstances made it tough to take a pay cut I would have to deal with it. Currently my work culture is unbearable and I'm pregnant and it makes getting up in the morning nearly impossible. It's such a miserable way to spend my pregnant days - stressed out and overworked. I would easily take a pay cut and switch jobs right now if I could find an employer open to hiring preggo women!

It would depend on how much less money and how much happier I would be. For instance, I would probably not change jobs if it would only make me a tiny bit happier but involved a 20% pay cut. I would take a job paying slightly less if it were also less hours though!

@Modern Daisy: and @Mrs. High Heels: I am absolutely at my current job because of the comfortability and flexibility. As long as you are happy with your current pay and situation, then why work more for a little more pay? Its possible the raise will just bump you into a new tax bracket and you will never even enjoy the pay raise. (Hi... that's happened to me plenty.)

@Modern Daisy: I'm in the more job than pay position currently. Totally overworked and stressed all the time, and not for that much money. I'd love to switch to a job (with the same employer) with less responsibility (like no weekends), but I would most likely take a pay cut.
I think for my mental health and overall happiness it might be worth the lost $. I'm really miserable where I currently am and it affects the whole family.

I left my previous job for my current job and I took a 10% cut. I was glad that I did. My other job was terrible. I hated the people I worked. At my current job, i feel there is room for growth, I learn so much, my coworker and boss are very supporting and they are very family centered.

I took the cut before LO

I recently had to make this decision and it was really tough! I decided to go with the higher paying job though because:

1) I would only be working 3 days a week but making more overall.

2) while the culture at my worksite is awesome, the general culture of the whole organization is less-than-desirable.

It was a hard decision because I really liked the team I worked with and I felt really appreciated at my previous job. There is however, lots of opportunity for growth in my new job and I couldn't forgive myself if I gave up 4-day weekends!!

I did... to become a stay at home mom. I was the primary breadwinner before. 3 months after I started staying home my husband left his job for a position with another employer that was a 25% paycut, but a significant improvement in quality of life. Money isn't everything.

I've been offered a job with more pay (less vacation though..) but I really love the company I work for and my boss/owner of the company is one of the best people I know.
Not to mention, I work so close to home, I get to have lunch with DS and the commute is 5-10 minutes.

Definitely. As long as we can pay the bills and not have to scrimp too much, DH and I would both take the job we love over the job worth more pay. That's been our philosophy since we met.

I love the firm I'm at right now, and I don't see myself leaving. They pay me rather competitively, but I could likely go someplace bigger and earn more. However, I'd lose great coworkers, partners that value my work, a very flexible and family-focused atmosphere, no billable requirements, and the ability to leave work at work and be done for the weekend. Most other places are all the opposite of that, and not worth the loss of time and added stress at all.

Definitely. I am working my butt off to run my own photography business. If I'm "successful" I'll probably be making about 33% less than I'm making right now as a lawyer. But it seems more than worth the trade-off to actually love what I do.

I think it really depends on what my overall career goals were. If I wanted to be a manager then I probably wouldn't take a lower paying job, but if I was ok with the career path for that position, then yes. I find some of the "soft benefits" can't be replicated.

Also, I agree with foodnerd81, I would still need to be maintaining a certain lifestyle level.

Yes but only if we were comfortable with the lower paying salary. Not wealthy but not stressed about paying the rent and cell phone bill, you know? Once a certain standard of living was met, yes I'd choose lower pay for a job I liked more.

People in my office need to realize this! SO many people leave for a competitor to make more money/better benefits, but 90% of the time end up coming back.

I would have a really hard time turning down a good offer though... It would take A LOT to get me to hate my job - I'm really good at leaving work at the office, and really good at dealing with people that are annoying...

I was just talking about this with some co workers yesterday! We're dinosaurs, we all had at least 15 years of service with our employer and were discussing why...we could all do the same thing, and the thing is, most people who leave either come back or wish they never left.

I'm the same. Job happiness is a lot more important than money to me. I'm making half of what I once made at a different job that I was miserable at but I wouldn't trade it. I love my job I have now.

If I were to leave my current employer and work for a competitor, I would easily get a 20% increase in my base salary, more vacation days and a signing bonus. So why don't I? Because I'm treated really well, not overworked and I like my boss and the culture of my company. My job doesn't ever get stale either, when I want to expand my responsibilities my boss is always open to it and totally supportive.

I've been in the opposite situation before and it was horrible. I feel like there is more to a job than the pay!

Does anyone feel differently? I feel like in our society so much emphasis is put on the total amount of $ you make, not the overall benefits of a job.
