I did a lot of slow moves when I was a renters and moved almost every time my lease was up. I would always rather have a week to get things slowly moved over than do it all in 1 day.

We JUST did this! A few thoughts:

* it was so awesome not to have to wrap/pack all of our dishes and other breakables. We just carefully put stacks in boxes and drove 2 streets over, and immediately unpacked them.
* we still had an official 'moving' day, where movers came for the big/heavy things (bed, table) and I was shocked by how much odds and ends were still left, even though the house was 90% empty.
* DS is 2.5 and he really loved the slow move. He decided he HAD to sleep at the new house 2 days before we were schedule to have the movers come for the beds. But we went with it, because happy toddler = happy life. We moved his crib over before nap, and DH and I slept on the small guest room mattress for 2 nights before our bed made it to the new house.
* on the downside, OMG it feels like we have been moving forever....

I hate moving so I try to do it as quickly as possible. Really, I've packed, moved, and unpacked within a few days. But slow moves can be good so you don't forget things. You get to know the new place better and there aren't as many things that surprise you. It sounds like you feel comfortable with it so why not?

I like a combination of these two - I've moved a bunch of times and like to spend about a week moving non-essentials over by car. My DH is a collector of many things so there are always plenty of non-essential items that can go without anyone missing them!

However, I do like to have one official "moving day" for big items with a truck. Having that deadline makes me much more efficient in my slow moving days.

All this being said, I've never been able to afford movers and if I ever move again I'm totally saving pennies to make it happen!

@justjules: We just did something similar to this and I loved it. We were moving an hour away so I had to be somewhat organized, but I think it was the way to go. We were lucky though that we were able to borrow a trailer from my FIL, so we didn't have to worry about moving it all in cars. A couple weeks early, we moved everything we had in a storage unit, plus a few other non-essentials. Over the next couple weeks, I packed as much as I could in boxes. I was done with my job on a Wednesday, but kept my daughter in daycare through Friday. On Thursday we moved most of our boxes of stuff plus some furniture like our table and couch, desk, and a couple dressers. On Friday, we moved beds and our daughter's stuff, and that was the first night in our new house. Then on Sunday I went back to our apartment to clean and collect the last odds & ends. Then I had another week home in the new house to unpack before I started a new job, which was heavenly - had a 6-month old home with me though, so I didn't get as much done as you might think. :)

@justjules: Have you factored in the cost of "renting" two places for a longer time period? That extra rent could add up. Also, extra utilities costs? Gas costs going back and forth (although 1/2 mile isn't much).

I still think that doing it over 10 days seems about right.

@justjules: we have done this before, we had 2 weeks to move from one apartment to another within the same complex a few years ago. Honestly it was just as stressful as a quick move. we were basically living in between both places

Eek. Well after the first few replies of all positive experiences, I was all prepared to go for the slow move, but now I'm not so sure!

I think the pros are:
1. because we are in a small apartment, we really don't have much stuff (like all of DS and DDs toys could fit into one box) so even a slow move could be quick. (But maybe I'm just too optimistic?)
2. I think it could be cheaper. We would ideally move all the boxes in our cars, and then hire people for just the big stuff.
3. Being more organized. I'm thinking we could pack a few boxes up, drive over, and unpack them right away so a lot of things are already in place before we officially move over

Cons:
1. Having it drag out instead of ripping the bandaid off like some people mentioned.
2. Going back and forth between two places, maybe not knowing which place something is in etc

Im not sure which would be less stressful for DS (18mo) DD is a newborn so her preferences are nonexistent. I'm thinking we would keep him in our old apartment till the last day then switch over his crib and our beds on the last day when everything is set up. But those few days in between may be hard?

Ug. I hate moving either way.

We've pretty much done this. On our last move, we were selling and buying at the same time. We had to put a lot into storage for staging, but we were also trying to save money.

DH would take stuff one car load at a time to the storage unit until we listed. So it wasn't being moved straight into the new place, but we didn't have boxes everywhere when we were in the process of packing and moving. That helped things seem less overwhelming to me.

I used to move a lot, so I've gotten pretty good at the process of slow packing (packing nonessentials first and doing a lot of labeling to make unpacking easier) so for me, it was less stressful.

The only thing I'd be worried about is cost. Will you be paying for two places at the same time anyway, or will it end up costing extra to stay in your old place longer?

I like to have some buffer between being out of the old place and into the new, but it's really because I like to have the new place cleaned to a certain level and having certain things set up, like closet systems, before moving my stuff in. When the actual moving happens, I prefer to do it all on one day and literally move everything, boxes and large furniture.

I'm debating this, we are in a rental right now while our house is being built, so I'd like to have a week or so to move between the two, however I know for a fact I'm going to want to be in our new home as soon as we can! I'm impatient like that :) If anything I'm hoping the builder will let us move some things over before we officially close.

We are only about 1/2 mile away.

My husband basically did this last time we moved. He only used movers for the big pieces of furniture. That would drive me completely crazy, and I only allowed it because I was on a business trip and he took care of the move. I would rather rip off the bandaid and just move everything at once.

It wouldn't work well for me as a procrastinator. I like it move all in one sho and get as much unpacked as possible. Our last move was my quickest yet because we had a shorter closing and had to unpack fast as we were getting married a month after moving and having people visit our house during the wedding.

Hate moving! Haha.

My friends did a month ish long slow move. They didn't mind it and have a toddler, but I can see the having to run back and forth to grab stuff thing happening.

We did a version of this, spread out over 10 days. We packed up and moved over most of the nonessentials, but did not unpack. We also bought some groceries and stored them at the new house. We did a lot of cleaning at both places, decluttering, etc. Then, a couple days before moving day, we packed up all the essentials, had a moving day, and then unpacked over a week.

My parents did a slow move when I was a kid and it was not a great experience on my kid end. It felt totally disconcerting, I felt like my stuff was all in limbo and nothing really felt familiar or like home for the whole move period until we were settled in the new place. My "old room" was all in boxes and felt weird and I didn't know where anything was, my "new room" didn't feel like my room either until I had all my stuff in there. I think it drug out weird moving feelings.

I'm surprised there is so much positive experience with this. I loathe moving but to me the only good part of it is when the lightning-fast professional movers swoop in and whisk your stuff to the new house and a few hours later it's DONE. And you're free to start getting settled. We just did a 2-mile move and we hired movers and I'm so glad we didn't try to drag it out. I would hate that feeling of half my stuff being in one place and half in another, like you'd never know where anything is!

Our last move took about a month and a half. It was pre-kids and also before we had really big furniture so we did it all with an SUV. We moved (bare) necessities over first one weekend to start living at the new house. Then we'd go grab more stuff a few times a week and unpack it as we went. We cleaned the old house as we went too. It worked very well for the stage of life we were in.

ETA: One nice thing about moving essentials first and leaving non-essentials for the end, is that towards the end a lot of it can just go straight to goodwill or the dump because you realize you don't actually need or want it.

We did this last summer. I loved it. We stayed in our old house during the slow move. We moved all non essentials over the slow move period to the new house and then hired movers to move the essentials at the end. I thought it saved us a lot of stress and moving expenses with the movers.

We are doing a 5 day overlap for our in town move. But really by the time we close on the new house and a day to turn in the keys to the new place its not quite that long.

Thursday - Sell our current house
Friday - Buy the new house, start cleaning at new house that afternoon
Saturday - Moving truck load 1 all boxes and most furniture. Sleep at old house on mattresses with overnight bags
Sunday - Moving truck load 2 mattresses and any other random things to be moved. Return moving truck
Monday - Unpack at new house and clean old house (we will be working short hours as well)
Tuesday - final day to clean/pack, etc and then hand over keys to the new house.

I did this the last time, but it was before kids. I imagine it would be even more helpful with kids in the picture. Like others have said, I trickled in a lot of the non-essentials over the first couple weeks, and then on the last day did one big last haul with the furniture and essentials. I had done so much in advance that there wasn't all that much to bring the last day, and it went by quickly and smoothly. It was SO much more manageable than doing everything in one day. I highly recommend it!

We did this somewhat for our last move. Really it was my husbands goal because he wanted to get all of the tech stuff (read: TV and computers) set up before we moved. So all of the cable stuff was done. We moved a lot quasi-essential stuff like extra pillows, sheets, wine, basics for the pantry, clothes we'd need quickly, and the kitchen items I'd need soon. We also used that time to order stuff we realized we'd need for the new place and measure for it (grill, furniture, new bathroom stuff). By the time we did our actual move, we were ready for it.

We have done this both times. Moved all the small stuff in carloads over a week or two then hired movers for the furniture

I definitely did this last August. We had about a month to move and clean and list the old house. It was so much nicer than a crazy weekend of moving. We did do one bigger day with a rental truck to get all the larger furniture, but mostly it was us using a pickup and doing a couple of loads every day or so. I was able to unload, unpack, and get organized as I went along and that meant that there weren't boxes sitting everywhere for months afterwards.

I think if you can do it, I would definitely recommend it!

We've done slow moves the last two times - although we had movers come on a single day move all the big stuff and reassemble the big furniture, so I guess there was technically a "moving day." I loved it. Mostly because I like having time to clean up the OLD place as opposed to having the new place all set up. I liked being able to move everything our son couldn't/wouldn't see (garage, nonessentials) first and then do everything he WOULD notice right at the last second - his room, bathroom, toys, etc.

I don't know if "slow moving" is a thing or not but here is an idea I have...

We are moving literally down the street. Maybe a 1/2 mile if that. We have a pretty small 2 bedroom apartment, flexibility on dates and can kinda live in both places for like a week. Im thinking I might want to attempt to move over a longer period of time. Like do a room a day. So move all the non essential things one day, then the kitchen another day, etc. we would just "live" out of a suitcase during this transition. I'm wondering if that would be less stressful than the traditional way it's done. Thoughts? Has anyone done something like that before?
