@ms. pug: 5 oz in one week is perfect!! Glad to hear you got some reassurance. Keep doing what you're doing - it sounds like your LO is doing great! <3

Thanks everyone for your help! We went back to the peds office friday and he had gained 5 ounces in a week (jumped up one %) and we discussed the %s. The doctor said he looks great and is very strong and alert/ active, and is not concerned. This is now the 3rd pediatrician (I'm a freak) that has reassured me, so I am going to just keep doing what I'm doing with EBF, and start solids when I feel he's ready. Thanks again!

My first son was born at 50%, then steadily dropped until 6 months, when he found his curve. My ped was not at all concerned, and he's grown on his own curve (5%) since then.

@Greentea: She actually didn't even share the %s at our appointment, she just said he looks great and his growth was great, and that I can continue to EBF and not introduce solids until 6 months. So I didn't even get a chance to ask. Something our pediatricians office does (blessing AND curse) is give us 24/7 online access to his chart including vital signs. I made the mistake of pulling LOs chart up and saw the %s. I am going to bring it up to the other pediatrician at the follow up i scheduled

@matador84:
Yes, he's definitely gaining and growing! He doubled his birthweight and gained almost 4 inches since birth (at exactly 4 months). My husband and I are both average (I am 5'4'', he is just under 6'0'', both average weight). I was on the small side as a baby/child, he was average (although both formula fed).

So is your LO gaining weight even though dropping in percentiles? As long as they are gaining and growing, I don't think it's a big deal. My DS was middle of the charts and dropped to the bottom/off the charts, and DD is middle of chart weight and not even on it for height. My ped never made a big issue of it and actually said percentiles really mean not much in the big picture as long as they are growing and gaining. You can have kids not even on the charts as babies and they grow up to be giants.

Looking at the bigger picture, it sounds like he is gaining weight, growing, reaching developmental milestones, and not having feeding difficulties. I would say don't worry. My first DS was born around 95%ile and gradually dropped to about 15%ile by age 1. From there he took off again and was back in the 98%ile by 2 years. You never know.

Our ped told us to never pay attention to the percentile, and just pay attention to whether she is growing along her curve! Plus I think their growth slows around 5-6 months, so I think it's normal!

Hm. My ped office would be concerned if a child was not on the (child's) usual curve. They told us the numbers don't matter, but staying consistent does. Did you ask about the child falling off the curve, was the doc concerned?

I chose Other because you didn't indicate how tall you or your husband are. My LO did this and it was totally normal, but DH and I are short and small. My LO started out at around 65% weight and 50% height and has progressively moved down the percentiles. By one year she was around 35% weight and 20% height. Now (21 months), she is probably 25% weight and 10% height. I've never worried because I am only 5'1" so it's likely that LO will be very small as well. Also FWIW, my pediatrician said as long as they gain between appointments, she wouldn't worry (regardless of %).

SO, despite everyone's reassurance, we are going back to the pediatrician tomorrow for a follow-up (yay for already hitting our deductible- LOL) because at the time of his last appointment he was was vomiting a little and had green mucus poops. we are seeing a new pediatrician in the practice and I'm going to bring up the %'s as a side topic. I'm hoping he is similarly unconcerned. Will post an update tomorrow afternoon!

A pediatrician isn't going to do something or not because they are pro-BF if your child is in danger. My daughter was EBF and we started solids at 8 months. She started off above 50th percentile in height and weight and has consistently declined since birth. At 15 months she was under 10 for both. She's just a peanut. She eats incredibly well (and a lot). She is gaining and hitting milestones early. No one is concerned. I would follow your Pediatricians advice, or if you aren't happy with them discuss them with her or find a new pediatrician for a second opinion.

Also, there is a separate growth chart for EBF babies. So they might not be using that one! Our office doesn't. You can google it though. My daughter wasn't even 14 lbs at her 6 month visit if that makes you feel any better! She was 19 lbs at a year.

If he is still gaining weight and getting taller I'd stay the course.
My youngest stopped gaining weight and we started solids early. She started at 75% for weight then levelled off to 50% and at my insistence had a weight check and had dropped to the 12%. We started solids and in two weeks she gained two pounds and was back to 50%.

I had almost the exact same situation. LO was 40th percentil at birth and 2 months, and by 4 months he was 25th, and he kept going down--I think at 9 months he was 10th? And at 1 year he was 12th or something. I didn't supplement but I did start solids at 5 months and started adding a small bottle before bed (which he didn't eat half the time!)--didn't really seem to do much, TBH and I wish I hadn't worried so much about it! He is just a tall skinny kid (has always been 80-90th percentile in height).

In addition to what the mommies above have mentioned, our babies become more mobile as they get older so it's normal for numbers to drop or plateau a bit.

I think it's normal. If your LO won't take more from bottles, then they're eating enough. You don't want to over-feed.

I took a quick look at the app I use to track his weight/height and he started his weight at 81%, then went down into the 70s, 4m 50s, and at 6m we hit our low of 45%. He was sick during some of this time, but he never lost weight or anything, and still ate consistently. Now, at 20m he's around 90%. Height was a little more consistent, but it did go from 97% at birth to 68% at 2m, to 85% now.

H has dropped in percentiles over the months, but she is still following her own curve. She was bigger when she was born and gained weight/height quickly, but it started to slow around 4 months. Our ped is not concerned. She's 21 months now and thriving.

@ms. pug: Girl, I've totally been there! You can go through my posts when Xander was 4-9 months and I posted CONSTANTLY about this topic because I was so concerned about his drop in percentiles (even though our pediatrician wasn't concerned) and people were constantly pressuring me to give him formula or start him on solids earlier just because his percentile was dropping. Just hang in there! <3

@Adira: Thanks so much! I feel like a silly first time mom getting so concerned over the %s when his ped says hes fine and when he is reaching all of his milestones. It doesn't help that no one in mine or DH's family ever breastfed before and they are CONSTANTLY telling me to "just give him formula" because he "needs it". I completely respect any mother's choice to give formula, but I don't have supply issues and am not having issues with our nighttime nursing (despite latch/ distraction issues) or pumping at work so I see no reason to supplement and hurt my supply I worked so hard for!

EBF babies often drop in the percentiles because the older babies get the more and more people drop breastfeeding and turn to supplementing so that throws off the "curve". Our daughter continually dropped percentiles until she was about 9 months and then found her "true curve". Our doctor was never concerned. LO was EBF until we transitioned to whole milk at a year. She hit all her milestones early and is a thriving 2.5 year old, who is now taller than most of her peers (though still a skinny little nugget).

My son was born 95th for height and 75th for weight. He didn't get back to his birth weight by almost 6 weeks and from there it was a slow but steady climb. He found his curve and has been on track ever since (around 50th for height, 25th for weight consistently), he's now 3.5.
I think sometimes it gets skewed when a baby is born big and figuring out nursing, bottles, starting solids, etc. As long as they've growing in both height and weight around same rate, it's normal.

I don't have the height info on hand, but it sounds normal to me! Xander was very similar and his weight percentile looked something like this:

Birth: 85th percentile
2 weeks: 70th percentile
2 months: 50th percentile
4 months: 35th percentile
6 months: 15th percentile
9 months: 16th percentile
12 months: 13th percentile
18 months: 15th percentile
2 years: 20th percentile

These numbers are estimates as I can't remember exactly what his percentiles were. But he essentially dropped in percentiles until around 6 months, when he settled into his own growth curve. I've seen other babies do this and heard this is REALLY normal, especially for breastfed babies! As long as your LO is gaining weight and meeting milestones, I wouldn't be too concerned!! <3

(Also, I totally WAS concerned that my son was dropping in percentiles just like yours until he settled on his own curve at 6 months and stayed around there for the rest of the year.)

DS is almost 5 months and is hitting all of his milestones and is doing great despite a stomach bug and a few colds we brought him to his ped for (thanks, daycare).

I am concerned, however, because while he is gaining, he keeps dropping in height and weight %. I went through similar threads and it seems like it's NOT the norm to drop consistently like that. When LO was born he was 23rd for weight and 78th for height. At 2 months he was 26th for weight and 34th for height. Now, at exactly 4 months, he was 14lbs, 24 inches or 16th for weight and 20th for height.

LO's pediatrician has seen him recently for his 4mo appt and is not concerned at all, but did not mention specifically his drop in percentiles, just that his growth chart looked great and that we don't need to supplement or worry about solids until 6 months. (he is EBF and has not had formula yet).

Does this seem normal to you? The pediatrician puts me at ease a little, but the office is pro-breastfeeding and I'm wondering if that influences their recommendations? Would you get a second opinion? I'm super worried and can't stop thinking about it. He is very active though and is ahead on all of his milestones- the ped couldn't believe how strong he was at his appointment- he was showing off rolling all over the place!

For reference, LO gets 6 bottles a day (between 21-24 ounces) and nurses 2x a day. I've tried to up his bottle size but he just spits up (he does not normally spit up at all).

Any advice would be awesome!
