@KayKay: magically one day this weekend it just went back to normal orange. No idea but it was two solid weeks of green.

@t.h.o.u.: still green? or doing better?

I've been doing mostly major-dairy-free for the last little bit, just because I realized it's not that hard (umm..TJs coconut-based ice cream FTW!). I also did some reading on oversupply and decided maybe that was why it was green? Again, it wasn't particularly frothy and he was gaining weight well...AND I usually only feed one side per time anyways, but around 6w he clusterfed like a mother, and I was back to being engorged a lot. So I was thinking maybe it was less of an imbalance and more just that there was a LOT of foremilk that he gulped down first. Anyways, I've been blockfeeding for the last couple days, and my supply seems to be regulating a bit better. This morning he had his first yellow(ish) poop in like 3w! It was still a little green, but way more on the yellow spectrum than anything else has been lately. Maybe just a fluke, but we'll see! And who knows which of the changes caused it, if any.

@KayKay: Thats a good update! We are going on week 2. It has changed slightly from neon green super liquid after every feeding back to a normal schedule and more of a forest green. I'm thinking she may have had a tummy bug and from what Ive read it can take a while to get their system back on track after that.

Just to update...

Went to the ped this morning, and she agreed that it seemed odd. He has gained 2.5lbs since his 2w appointment, so clearly is gaining and growing just fine, even though the green normally would indicate foremilk/hindmilk or not getting enough. He also is happy/not fussy, sleeping & napping well, and eats calmly, so aside from weight gain doesn't seem particularly hungry or uncomfortable. I had a dirty diaper with me, and she said it didn't look like mucus to her.

So we're basically at wait and see. She said if I see blood or a lot of mucus to come in before 4m, otherwise it's probably fine. She also said I *could* cut dairy & soy for like 3w to see if it changes anything, but she said she wouldn't necessarily expect the color to change -- just stop any blood/mucus.

I'm just going to keep an eye on it and try to not to think about it constantly anymore unless something changes! :)

@t.h.o.u.: i just about always only feed one side per feeding. unless he is cluster feeding/growth spurt, in which case i switch a couple times during the 45min or whatever ridiculous amount of time he is content to "eat" for. so it really seems unlikely that it's a foremilk/hindmilk thing, except maybe occasionally (and his poops are green far more than occasionally!)

@t.h.o.u.: @mrsbells: so i have been probably 99% dairy free starting on tues. i can't remember what i had for lunch & snack that day, but my breakfast was dairy-free (always is) and everything i've had since that afternoon has mostly been. no milk, cheese, ice cream, etc. maybe a touch of added butter that first night of leftovers. annnnnddd....poops have all been green and maybe even mucusier than before!

my older 2 girls have been fighting some sort of throat/fever virus, and i think i had it for a brief 24h stint mid-week, so it's possible that he has a very mild version of that and has some drainage.

but otherwise -- wtf?! i know that it can take 2-3w to totally clear your system, so whatever trace is in there currently could still be bugging him. but it *seems* like it shouldn't be worse! maybe he needs MORE dairy :)

on the other hand, he slept 8h last night, so apparently whatever is causing the mucus isn't bugging him either...

@Mrsbells: How long has yours been going on? Ive been doing block feeding when I nurse (making sure she "finishes" a side) and she's getting 4 bottles a day (which should mix it up). So I'm guessing ours isn't an imbalance issues but I dont know what it may be.

@KayKay: my little one is going through a similar thing with the green poop at 4 months. I believe the foremilk inbalance is causing it to some extent but not sure if there might be other reasons too

@KayKay: i honestly wouldn't bother w/ cutting dairy for moderate spit up. R was literally an outfit change and multiple spit ups after every feeding! And in the end I don't think it really mattered that I cut dairy. It just made me cranky!

@winniebee: yeah, we're not exactly fountains, but enough that we often have mid-day outfit changes, always need a burp cloth on-hand, etc. and he has a nice rash around his mouth/chin from the constant wetness & acidity. so any of that improving would probably be worth it.

@KayKay: I gave up all dairy with Ryan was well - he was a colossal spitter upper. It was seriously fountains all day long. He also had the green poo and was very uncomfortable after feedings from about 6-10 weeks. I re-introduced dairy at 7 months once his spit up was a tiny bit better....it didn't make much of a difference so I just ate it. He stopped spitting up mostly around 10 months, but we didn't notice any appreciable difference until probably 8 months.

This is how we found out our LO had a milk sensitivity ... doc was not initially concerned, but we ended up switching to breastmilk (I cutout dairy) + soy formula around 6 weeks. It got to the point where her poop was very dark and there were streaks of blood. :( It started as green poop (and she had a little rash along her hairline).

My DD had this problem and like MamaBird said, it was mostly likely due to oversupply. Same thing with the watery milk. Thats what the LC said anyway. She never seemed uncomfortable and it didn't last too long. Things got better when my supply calmed down.

@KayKay: FWIW, DS1's MSPI symptoms didn't really amp up until he was 10 weeks old, which is pretty typical I think. So I wouldn't worry about anything yet, but just keep that in the back of your mind! :)

@mama bird: it's definitely not that because I only feed one side at a time and have for all of my kids. Basically I only block feed! :)

@t.h.o.u.: you may have convinced me to at least give up the major dairy for the next week and see what happens. His couple of poops today were a little mucousy and i may have increased my ice cream intake this week :) so maybe I'll cut that. Honestly, other than a daily latte and ice cream I don't eat a ton of dairy, so it shouldn't be too bad?

@pollywog: see stories like that make me a bit nervous except that he is seriously calm/happy anyways. Like I can imagine the poop changing color or maybe spit-up decreasing....but hes already an otherwise happy, easy baby. Clearly that could change though!

Is it very green? DD's was slightly greenish and it was an oversupply problem. She was getting too much watery milk and not enough fatty stuff. I can't quite remember what I did about it, but I think there was some block nursing on one side at a time so the good stuff could build up on the other side.

He was in the 90th percentile and did just fine without changing my diet, but once I went dairy and egg free for a week he ended up much happier. He continued to rapidly gain weight.

@KayKay: I saw a difference in the amount of spit up even by just eliminating the main dairy sources. So the latte (switched to almond milk), gave up dairy, no cheese sticks for a snack, no pizza or ice cream.

But chocolate that has dairy or baked goods with dairy haven't seemed to have too big of an impact on her so it seems like it was a good compromise.

Ok, glad I'm not being negligent ;) I'm clearly not TOO concerned, otherwise I would've gotten into the ped before the 2m visit next week. But neither of my older 2 were spitters at all (seriously, I wondered why all the crazy people talked about having so many clothes/sheets/burp cloths! ha - jokes on me now!), and both had normal yellow poo. So even though I'm not concerned enough to go to the doc, I'm concerned enough to think about constantly!

@winniebee: @mrs. goose: yeah, i mean, even if he is a little bit sensitive to something, it's clearly not really affecting his temperament or growth, so it's hard to be too motivated to try eliminating anything/everything.

@t.h.o.u.: i agree -- way too many variables to know what it could be / when to really worry! i keep thinking that maybe i should just try to go dairy free and see what happens, but i'd have to do it for a couple weeks before i see a change, and i keep thinking...man, a latte sounds REALLY good this afternoon! :)

the only thing i can think of that i'm ingesting differently than with DD1 and 2 is that i'm taking a different vitamin. same brand, they just have a "post natal" one now that i use. i suppose those would be easy to cut out or switch back and see if it's somehow just the herbs/whatever in that?

Just mention it to the doctor and see what they say. My daughter was exactly the same at 6 weeks for a whole month. Same temperament as yours, gaining well, a slimy one once in a while. The midwife said as long as she was gaining well, seemed happy, and was sleeping well then it wasn't an issue. I can't believe it lasted so long for my daughter but her poo did eventually go back to normal.
