We have a two up two down, but the second bedroom upstairs is huge and we plan on having our kids share a room until they rebel and want their own room.

@char54: This is so strange! DH and I are looking at a house with a similar setup on Friday and have been debating about whether or not we'd be comfortable with this. We've decided that it depends on where the basement outside door is (it's a walk-out) and how easy the stairs are to get up to the main floor. I'll try to remember to get back on and let you know what we thought!

This house literally has EVERYTHING we want-except for the bedrooms being separate.

I say go for it, but that's because our house is like that. We have the master downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. Baby will be with us the first couple weeks in our room in a bassinet, but then he's moving upstairs and away from us! Oh well!!

I'm not overly concerned about it. We have safety gates that we'll put up once he's mobile so that he won't fall down the stairs, and I figure once he's able to open them on his own, then HOPEFULLY he's old enough to go up and down the stairs on his own. I think my brother and I were upstairs and my parents downstairs when we were 3 and 4, so I'm not going to worry about it.

We have 2 down and 3 up.

master bedroom and 1 bedroom are downstairs...turned that one into an office.

LO & 2 empty rooms are upstairs. We have a monitor and he is a great sleeper so it has never been a problem.

For me stairs at all are a deal breaker. But that's just because I'm lazy :) But if you want a two story I think it's something that you'd be able to work out.

Master on main was a deal breaker for us, so this would be too. Many years down the line, it would be nice, though.

You could temporarily move stuff around if you had to, I suppose- baby in your room for a while? That's what we're planning just for convenience. I think there would be some shuffling and inconvenience for a while, but I'm sure in other houses there would be other issues/inconveniences, so if this is the only issue I'd say it's worth it!

I've been thinking a lot about this too, bc most 3 beds we looked at do not have all three on one floor. I kind of came to the conclusion that we would probably end up with #2 in te master for a little longer until 1 was old enough to be on another floor. Not ideal, but it's also only for a year or two at most that I think it would be a problem. That set up sounds really similar to ones we have looked at. I think if everything else was perfect I'd go for it. We saw one with two floors in between (master and one other bed on 3rd floor, living and kitchen 2nd, and 3rd bedroom on first floor) and that was a deal breaker for me.

Our house has 2 bedrooms on the main level (master & spare bedroom that will be a nursery someday), 2 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms in the basement.
So I say go for it!!

@char54: I think that is a great plan, that way, when they are older and you/them are more comfortable, you will all have the space to spread out. If kids are going to sneak out, they will do it regardless of what floor they sleep on ;)

I say go for it! It actually sounds perfect. Might be annoying for the next few years but if it's your dream home..you'll be there long enough for it to work for you. I looveedd having my sister & my room upstairs while my parents were down!

@Bao: We absolutely loooveeee it. There isn't one thing that needs to be done, just turn key and move in. It's beyond our wildest dreams and shockingly within our price range. I like the idea of putting a monitor in the room.

The family who lives there now has 2 kids, one is upstairs across from the master and the older child (5 years old) is downstairs.

I suppose if it was really awful and LO hated being on a different level we could have them share the room upstairs until one of them feels comfortable enough to go downstairs.

I guess it would depend on how much I liked the house, I don't necessarily think it would be a deal breaker for me. Keeping a monitor in their room when they are older (toddler, even school age) is a good option so you can listen in on them and know they are safe.

Sorry I should clarify - the master and nursery are the main floor with the other 2 bedrooms in the basement (it's technically a basement but completely finished and has lots of natural light). The two rooms aren't that far apart, (besides a short hallway and a flight of stairs). Still not ideal, I know. Hmm. Lots to think about!

We looked a house like that and decided it wasn't for us. The windows were much too accessible and there was even a door right outside in one of the lower level bedrooms. I am way too paranoid to have a child of any age sleeping alone on their own ground level floor with it being so easy to sneak out or heaven forbid, someone to get in. I'm not comfortable with anything but second level bedrooms.

I could never never have my 2/3 year old be downstairs and me be upstairs. I'm paranoid because of a prior experience but what if there was an intruder in your home? Your LO would be alone downstairs which is where the intruder would enter. In general I don't like the idea of being on a separate floor (what if the child woke up and had an accident on the stairs trying to get to you?). But I could MAYBE do it if the master was downstairs. But the set up you describe would be a deal breaker for me.

The dream home DH and I found is perfect in every way... except for one detail. There are 2 bedrooms on one floor (master and smaller bedroom which would be the nursery) and 2 bedrooms on the other (2 large size rooms). It wouldn't be a big deal now with LO #1, but when #2 is on the way it would mean moving LO#1 downstairs. Is 2-3 years old too young to be 'alone' on a floor??

I'm sure when the kids are older it will be heaven for them to be downstairs away from mom and dad - it's kind of like their own little suite with a shared bathroom and den.

DH thinks it will be fine but I'm worried for when LO #1 is a toddler!
