Only if I knew the person I was getting it from! There are a few closed systems that are safe that I would consider as well. Just have to buy new tubing and accessories.

Only if I personally knew the person. I think a pump is too...What's the word...Intimate? You know what I mean.

I researched this way back when, and I believe rented hospital-grade pumps are closed systems, so as long as you get new tubing you're fine. However, most personal pumps are open system, so they say some milk (or condensation from warm milk) can get inside the pump mechanisms, and if someone's diseased or whatever, it could be hazardous.

I borrowed a pump from a friend. Another one of her friends took it from me after I was done pumping and she had a baby, so I guess I'm gonna have to buy a new one for the next baby! We switched health insurance so I'm crossing my fingers that at least some of the pump is covered this time. I'd rather have my own, anyway, and I want to try and get the smaller pump.

Yes if I knew the person.

My first one , and the one I just got, is used, both from people I know. My theory is always "I can sit and potty on the same toilet that they just sat and pottied on, so I can put my boob on something they have put their boob on!" I don't think I would be so comfortable with it if I didn't know the person though.

I would only buy a used closed system pump, and there are only a few out there (Hygeia & Limerick). Since I exclusively pump, I went with a new pump to make sure I had a brand new motor that could keep up with my frequent pump sessions.

No like pp have said the ones you rent are closed systems. I see many people selling used pumps but I couldn't imagine using one for my newborn.

It depends. Some pumps (like rentals) are closed systems, which means milk can't get into the pumping mechanism, so if you use new tubing, etc germs can't pass between users. I would definitely buy a used closed system pump. Most pumps, like the Medela pump in style, are open system, so milk could get into the actual pump and transfer germs between users. I'd only buy a used open system pump if I knew the person I was buying it from.

Nah, since our healthcare FSA covered it, I got a new one. I didn't even use my own old pump from my first LO. Some insurance companies cover them now too. I read somewhere about Medela being an open system (meaning some milk could potentially get into the pump) and it sort of freaked me out from buying used or even using my old one.

Yes, I would, particularly if it was from someone I knew. I say this from a friend's experience (hers was given to her by a mom who'd used it with three babies already.) Just clean it well (which the previous owner probably already did.)

I have found medela breast pumps for sale in my area on craigslist for cheap.
A part of me things eeeww... but another part of me thinks, well some women rent breast pumps so why not?

Would you buy a used breast pump? If so, what would you look out/inspect for before paying for it?
