@Mrs. Peanut: flips have disposable inserts as well, I felt it defeated the purpose of a cloth diaper cost wise though.

Wouldn't bother me - there's nothing a bleach soak doesn't kill.

Besides - think of how many blow outs kids have. If you buy any used clothes, it most likely has had poop on it.

These are great responses! It does help me to understand where DH is coming from, but I still feel as though I would buy them used. Maybe with a professional cleaning he may feel better. It's not a health issue, otherwise nobody could use CD. Although like you guys have said, if I shop good sales, I may be able to get them just as cheap. Perhaps once I get a few different kinds that way and decide what works best for our LO, DH won't be so weirded out by it! I think you are right, the more you do it, the less gross it seems.

ETA: I haven't heard of gdiapers before. I did a few quick searches and they definitely sound like something to consider! If the insert gets changed, then it's like a fresh pair each time. DH wouldn't have to worry about it touching another child's business as much. Interesting!

No the thought of it grosses me out. But, I don't even like used clothing to be honest. If you're going to use them for more than one child of yours, I personally would be justified in buying new.

@xInfinity: I pretty much throw away anything that had more than just a little spot of poop on it.

I haven't bought any used yet but I definitely would if the right deal came up. Question for the people who said they don't trust the cleaning process in general for cloth diapers: do you throw out every piece of clothing that gets dirty when your LO has a leaky diaper/blowout/potty training accident and pee or poop gets on it? Or do you wash it and let them wear it again? Just curious!

Yup. We will buy used clothes for all of us, if we see something we like. I don't buy used underwear for the adults or kids mostly because it's so cheap to buy new. Most sellers take really good care of their CDs.

The only reason why we didn't buy our CDs used was because they hold their value so well that the used ones sell for nearly the same price as brand new ones! So, clearly there are many people who don't perceive an "ick factor."

I used gdiapers with disposable inserts and absolutely bought used pants. Not all cloth diapers are the kind you are describing. And yeah, I didn't throw away my daughter's underwear if she pooped in them while potty training. If they are clean, what's the difference. I feel like this eww factor can be extended to sleeping on hotel sheets or using a fork at a restaurant.

@jetsa: agreed. tbh I am far more grossed out by the crazy chemicals that are in disposables. I get why it grosses people out, especially those who don't buy used anything, but there is no health issue. any ick factor is a perception issue, not a medical one.

No- too much Ick factor. Even if the rational part of my brain knows it's been sanitized, I just can't get past the yuck factor. It feels like buying used undies. For the same reason, I can't buy used bathing suits.

As others have said, if you don't trust the wash process then cloth is going to be tough in general. We have mostly used, from our local store and from individuals. Having said that, even new is still going to be a lot cheaper than disposable.

I have no issues with buying used CDs. HOWEVER, we use Bumgenius and have been able to get our NEW CDs for the same price people seem to charge for decent quality used ones ($11-12) by using coupons and buying Black Friday sales. Because of this, I haven't seen any point to buy used Bumgenius... I might buy if someone was selling at a really great price, but I haven't seen that. Plus I should get most of my money back when I sell

No, no, and no. I wouldn't buy used underwear for myself so I certainly wouldn't buy the equivalent for my brand new baby! It's just yuck to me - I don't care how many times they've been washed.

Disclaimer: I don't buy any used clothes though, for anyone, so I'm sure that greatly colours my view....

I have some used diapers, and some from Craigslist that were never used because the person who bought them decided not to go cloth after their baby was born. I'm super confused at why this seems gross to anyone. I mean had I shown up and the diapers were stained or smelly, I would've walked away. But part of the allure of cloth is being able to use them for multiple kids to save money, sooooo my second kids will all have been used.

@rosegold: there is absolutely no health issue here! These diapers are sanitized before being sold and then the next person cleans them before using them. If there was any kind of "germs" that washing didn't take out no one would be able to use cloth diapers bc you'd continually "reinfect" yourself, but there's not so this is moot.

Yep I bought part of my stash off the BG fb swap pages (there's a huge used market). I will also sell my diapers there when I'm done. I'll recoup at least half my costs. If your dh is worried about cleanliness you could always send them to a cd service before using them, I send mine out every 6 months or so.

The ick factor is too high for me, but the ick factor for cloth diapering in general is also too high for me. I have a feeling this is one of those things that seems like much less of a big deal after you've been cloth diapering for a while. Second kids probably get way more used than first
