I'm guessing it's usually her that calls, because most of the time, he gets escorted out. One time, they made him take all his stuff out of the house. It sat on the lawn for a week before he came back for it. 3 months later, he was back. I don't ever want to be a bystander! I'd definitely use my judgment and only call if I suspected violence - but I'd much rather err on the side of caution. I was in my college apartment and I could hear my neighbors on the 3rd floor yelling from the parking lot. It was a man yelling and a woman crying loudly. And then I heard a loud thunk. Worst case scenario - someone is being hurt and then I would be happy I called. Best case - just a fight or they are watching TV too loud. Even if that's the case, it could be a wake-up call for them. At the very least, they are disturbing the peace so you have a right to call. I don't know what happened, but they initially refused to answer the door until the officer demanded it. Then two weeks later a cop came by looking for the guy who lived there. So even though it didn't sound like "much," I'm really glad we called. @eiko2010: When I called the cop said that he "heard them from hisquad car." He then went inside, so I don't know if he ever said their neighbors called, but I doubt it. You could call and say you are worried for your safety and ask that they not say who called. Even if its obviously, like you are the only neighbor, the cop could say he just heard it patrolling by or something. If things are so heated I can hear it in my yard or home I definitely call. If I didn't call and someone ended up being beaten or stabbed, and I did nothing to help them I would never forgive myself. I might not be able to stop something, but I can at least try. Police in my city don't reveal the origin of complaints, so I don't worry about retribution. I do call for suspected gunshots though (I've heard a few before). DH woke up to what he thought was a gunshot before we got married but just went back to sleep. There have been times I've worried someone would call the police, if they had it would have made things soooo much worse. In MA you can't drop domestic charges- you can't have someone taken out for the night and then drop it, they have to go to court, that can really screw up someone's life. If they were pissed before, now they'd have a real reason to be pissed. But we have never called the cops. Our reasoning behind that is that we are 90% certain that the male of the home sells drugs out of the house and therefore we are also 90% sure that he has a gun. We do not want to get involved and be a target of his anger or anything like that. Call me selfish, but safety of my faily is pretty damn important to me. I used to have super bad anger issues and when I got mad I would throw things or whatever and my neighbors called the cops. That wasn't fun. My neighbors yell all the time but I just ignore it. If that did happen, I would most definitely call the police. It's better for the police to intervene in case something bad is happening. On a somewhat related note, neighbors have called the police on my parents. They had a heated argument, which was normal to me but not so much to the people around us. The police interviewed my sister and me. I felt like they wanted me to say something bad about my dad. I heard a lot of yelling, pounding and screaming earlier and was going to call the police.. Right when I grabbed my phone to tell DH, he messaged saying there were a ton of cop cars parked outside. No idea what's going on, but I wanna know what's going on out there! If it wasn't raining I'd be tempted to go outside and snoop :)
