@mrs. bird: @MrsBrewer: here where i'm at you can just walk in, get a gun/ammo and walk out. Now they're just shotguns, no handguns, but there is no wait period so maybe he was used to that? I didn't know it was diffrent elsewhere!

Hey guys... great discussion, but if you don't mind let's keep it focused on the original topic: whether or not you'd own and/or carry a gun. Thanks!

Yes.

@ChopSuey119: We have several guns, too (including a shot gun). When I was single, I actually defended myself with a shotgun against an uninvited house guest.

@mrs. bird: Some people are crazy! Here in WI we have a 48 hour holding period. From the time that you buy the gun, to the time you pick it up, you need to wait 48 hours. It's a law, and I think it's a great law to have in effect!

@Rachel: fellow prideful MA resident here =) recently i had to go to walmart <shudder> to get something for camping. there was a guy having a fit at the sporting goods counter because he was here visiting from somewhere down south & needed a gun that day so he could go shooting. he was irate that here he couldn't just waltz into a store & leave fully armed. what would you ever need a gun for in such a hurry??

I would never allow a gun in my house under any circumstances, for all the reasons @Mrs. Jacks said. And maybe it's a cultural/regional thing, but I also don't know a single person who isn't in law enforcement that owns a gun. I've never shot one or even touched one. I feel like if there was a situation where I could use a gun to protect myself I wouldn't actually be able to go through with shooting a person.

And I know I say this a lot on these boards, but again, I'm happy to live in MA, where gun laws are a bit stricter.

No guns for me. I grew up around guns (for hunting and target shooting) and I feel very comfortable with guns, but I'm not interested in having them in my house. Actually, where we live now, it's illegal to shoot a gun. So even though we live rurally and deal with some very bold predators (bears, mountain lions, and coyotes), we've just learned other ways to protect ourselves, since guns aren't even an option.

Also, personally, I would never keep a gun for self-defense. It's anecdotal, but I know a lot of people who own guns. I've never met a person who has successfully defended him/herself using a firearm, but I know lots and lots of stories about "accidents" that happened with people who were trained and educated about safe gun use.

-Both DH and I need start training our aim and shots with a professional so that we know how to properly use it and we we have to update ourselves every year.
-it has to be kept in a safe...never will I carry it around in my car or purse! (and the kids won't know it exists)

I wouldnt buy or own a gun. I dont think that owning a gun keeps you any safer. In fact more often than not guns are used against their owners. I lived in england for many years where even the cops dont carry guns and there was much less gun crime over there.

I grew up with a gun in the house and I KNEW BETTER than to go near it. So did my brother. Neither of us messed with it or went near it. It was drilled into our heads from a young age and it was always kept way out of our reach. It was for protection, plain and simple. There were a couple of incidents where someone tried to ram the door down or break in, and my dad went and got his pistol.

If we lived in an area where we felt it necessary, we'd have one. And then we'd probably move, ha. But we live in a safe area and we have a house alarm, so I feel very safe in my home.

I own a gun and will carry as soon as I finally find time to get my permit. I've been in situations where I desperately wished that I were able to defend myself, and had to depend on others to step into my aid. Never a situation that I want to be in again - and especially not with a child to protect. Hypothetical situations are scary enough to consider, but actually being in that moment - it's a horrible thing to not be able to defend yourself. And I say that as a black belt in taekwondo. It's not enough.

If I felt the need I would not be against getting my concealed weapons permit and I would carry. We have hunting guns in the house, but they are locked in a gun safe where only DH and I know the combination. I don't think there will ever be a reason to own a handgun, but if need be I'm not against it.

DH would like a gun in the house and I've said absolutely no way. You can take every precaution that you can think of ... but there will always be something that you have not thought of and that is how a child might find themselves holding the gun. I don't think a gun would make me feel any safer. The rate of accidents that occur involving children just freaks me out too much.

@scg00387: I just wanted to say that we have a gun safe, and our gun is readily available to us if someone broke into our house. We have a small safe (we only have a handgun) and the safe is on the bottom of an end stand right on DH's side of the bed. But it's not a key and lock type of safe, it's a sort of combination safe where you push buttons in a certain sequence to pop the safe door open. The combination has to be between 4-12 digits. Right now we have ours set at a combination of 8 buttons you have to push in the right order. Extremely secure, but still able for DH to open in the dark if he would need to.

Our house was broken into a few years ago, and Hubs wanted to get a gun. I was dead-set against it, for all the reasons that @Mrs. Jacks said. It just doesn't feel safe to me to have a gun in the house, no matter how many safes, locks, devices, etc, you put in place. Besides, if your plan is to own a gun for protection, I just don't see how you can honestly think that by the time you realize there is an intruder in your home, you can get up, get to the safe, open the safe, load the gun, and be ready by the time the intruder has found you and/or your family. I respect others' rights to own a gun (within reason - assault weapons should absolutely be banned), but it's just not something I want for my family.

@scg00387: Actually right now, we don't have any kids yet, so we don't keep all of our guns in a safe because I agree 100% and have said that a thousand times to people that you can't defend with a gun if you have to tell someone to wait while you unlock the gun safe. But I can assure you that you could spend a week in my house and never come across a gun on accident. Only if I told you where they were.

@Mrs. Jacks: I could defend that but I see you take your job (i'm assuming nurse or something?) seriously seeing all of those accidents, so i'm not going to bother- we obviously feel different about this but I absolutely respect/understand your point and decision.

This thread freaks me out! We have a gun locked up at home...it belongs to DH. Seriously, just looking at it is horrifying to me.
I'd like to believe having a safe tucked away in a closet that LO's can't reach even with a stool/chair would protect my son and daughter and still protect our house and family if anyone broke in...but I hate thinking of the possibility of something tragic happening.

DH has taken me to the shooting range a few times to get me familiar with guns but I'm still terrified of them.

We don't own a gun and don't ever plan to. My husband is capable of handling a gun as he has served in the military, but we don't feel that we need one.

For those of you that do own guns, please put them in gun safes...if your home is burglarized and those guns are stolen, they can end up in the wrong hands. I've written this before on the boards, please consider it.

@mrstiz I am asking earnestly - how do you keep a gun safe and locked up, 100% out of the way from kids' hands but also readily available if someone broke into your house in the middle of the night, or on your person and ready to use if someone opened fire where you were?

I am definitely not trying to put you on the defensive - I just don't understand how those two thoughts reconcile and do not have any gun ownership among friends or family to consult or compare.
