I would cash it. I don't think they'd give it to you if they didn't want you to have it.

Cash it. And just because their home is in foreclosure doesn't mean their financial situation is dire. I know there's a lot of folks out there who are willingly going into foreclosure to get rid of a house they are underwater on (even if they are able to continue making the mortgage payments). Not saying that's the case here, just that there could be more to the foreclosure story than you know.

I would cash it. They will likely be hurt if you don't cash it because you made an assumption about their financial situation. I know it a totally fair assumption given what you know about their home being foreclosed, but either way you just need to trust that they have the $50 to give to you and that they wanted you to have it.

so it sounds like most people think cashing it is the way to go. let's hope it clears, that would be even more awkward!

I agree that having an outstanding check floating around can be annoying. I would cash it and then send a thank you card. I'd also send a nice gift at the first available birthday, anniversary, random holiday, etc.

Ya I would cash it in as well, because maybe they have that 50$ in their account and waiting endlessly for someone to cash it might make things worse...

I agree with @mrs. wagon: cash it right away, but instead of sending something that's about the same amount, make it personalized with a doodle from LO instead, a thank you card and maybe a picture of your LO.

I agree that it is rude to refuse to accept money from family, especially when they are so insistent in initiating the gift. I would cash it asap, then send something back in return for the same type of monetary value. Maybe a gift basket with fruit, cheese, meats, etc.

I agree I would cash it, however I'm the type of person who woudl be sendign something back in the mail as soon as the opproutnity arises (anniversary, birthday, ect.) even if it seems odd to "even" things out! I woudl make sure do send cash so they can't avoid using it!

I know I personally hate having checks floating around un-cashed for an endless period of time. So, cash that thing! If they are having financial trouble, having a random $50 hit their account somewhere far down the line would be a lot worse. They definitely have the funds to cover it now, since they wrote the check (hopefully!) so I'd just get it cashed and be done with it.

on mother's day we visited with DH's family. someone who was there mentioned that they hadn't seen since my birthday, took out their checkbook and proceeded to write me a check for $50. i said thank you for the kind gesture, but that it really wasn't necessary. the individual insisted that you cannot refuse to accept money from family.

this same person had their home go into foreclosure last week! i know the $50 isn't going to fix their financial issues, but i feel very uncomfortable cashing the check (DH & i are by no means wealthy, but we certainly don't need $50). what would do? cash it? hold on to it for a while & then if they mention it say you forgot & then cash it? just rip it up??

ETA: i don't think this person is aware that i know about their home going into foreclosure, if that makes a difference
