And just because their home is in foreclosure doesn't mean their financial situation is dire. I know there's a lot of folks out there who are willingly going into foreclosure to get rid of a house they are underwater on (even if they are able to continue making the mortgage payments). I would cash it asap, then send something back in return for the same type of monetary value. So, cash that thing! If they are having financial trouble, having a random $50 hit their account somewhere far down the line would be a lot worse.
