Absolutely. I think anytime you begin to doubt your doctor it is time to change practices.

@littlebug: No, I agree. That would be really frustrating and would be enough to make me switch. Do you have any friends/co-workers that can recommend their ped? I always feel more comfortable choosing a doctor that comes highly recommended.

I think you should definitely look for someone else if you are thrilled with this one. He isn't giving you a lot of direction or support and that sounds like what you are asking for.

@Greentea: @lawbee11: I don't have a problem with them stating that there is a problem - I appreciate them pointing out things that they're concerned about. My problem is that they make these statements but then don't offer suggestions for us to do anything to help.

@Freckles: @Foodnerd81: Truth be told, at his 9 month appointment, I didn't ask a whole lot of questions - I was still trying to process the "he's underweight" and "he has a heart murmur" when she threw in "he's behind." All of it casually mentioned, like it was no big deal; especially the heart murmur, which I found really upsetting. BUT at his 12 month appointment, I felt like I asked a lot of questions and his response was "You must challenge him" and then he told us to stand him in the middle of the room and let go. WHAT?!

I would be very annoyed that she isn't helping you with specific ways to work with your LO. Our ped has the best bedside manner of any doctor I've ever met, and it's what I love most about him.

That being said, I would prefer a ped that's honest and voices his/her concern if he/she thinks there is an issue with weight gain/development rather than say everything is peachy keen then it turns out to be a problem later on down the road.

To be honest, I personally like a doctor that "tells me how it is." Okay, that is not the right wording... I like a doctor to be a hardass. My OB made me cry but she was really on top of things. I have had other doctors that are more cushy... and I don't always prefer that. It comes down to what works best for you however but I *think* the doc is just trying to help you. Again, if that isn't the approach that works for you maybe you need to find a different professional that works better for/with you.

I would change. You need someone to give you more direction regarding weight gain and meeting milestones. They need to let you know if you actually should be worried or not. Find someone with the bedside manner that suits you and your LO. Good luck finding someone new!

I would change too. To give the ped the benefit of the doubt, it COULD just be that you aren't asking the right follow up questions and she isn't making a big deal of things because she isn't that concerned. But, that is kind of besides the point because you need to feel like you are working together and getting the answers you need without having to play 20 questions. I'm sure you can find a ped who is a better fit for you and your specific needs and baby.

Taking away the benefit of the doubt, she sounds super annoying. My dentist can actually be like that, mentioning things so casually that later I'm like, wait, what? I have a cavity? It's frustrating, but that's a simple thing for an adult mouth, not a ped for a new baby and first time parents.

I am changing practices for less! I am of the opinion that the parents and the doctor should be a team. I recently changed N into a new practice because we couldnt work as a team with his previous doctor. I don't think your over reacting and I would have been livid with your doctor. Hope find someone you like a lot better.

I would probably switch. If they are just going to point out problems but not offer substantial advice ("let him go" doesn't count!), then I would talk to my friends and see who they are happy with.

Did your old pediatrician give you detailed advice? If my pediatrician brings up an issue, i will follow up with a number of questions before he can even give me advice. There are some doctors who hand-hold their patients and others who put the responsibility on the parent. It doesn't seem as if it's the right fit for you, and i'd probably look for a new one.

If you are contemplating switching pedis, go with your gut and do it. It sounds like you feel like your pedi is not a good "partner" and isn't helping you create an action plan to address your concerns/their concerns.

Go to another pedi for a second opinion and see if you like their approach/communication style better.

I would be shopping around for sure. I feel like if htey are going to say things like that they need to give you ideas on how to help, not just say it and leave it at that. Our pediatrican has all sorts of handouts for any question I have regarding LO. I would think they would haev some tips/tricks to help.

That ebing said, my LO was petite too, as long as you feel like he's getting the nutrition he needs & he is appearing full, I wouldn't be concerned. Some kids are just smaller! Keep offering a wide variety of foods, and give him lots of healthy fats (avacardo, peanut butter, ect.) to try and fatten him up a bit!

I think you should switch anytime you're uncomfortable with your healthcare provider. As far as if she's giving poor medical advice, I have no idea. It's not clear whether you asked questions at the other appointments (I'm assuming so), but it sounds like you may need to ask for more details. Maybe you could make an appointment just to address these issues for specific guidance, or you could even seek a second opinion.

I would be frustrated that your pediatrician is pointing out "issues" but not offering any specific advice or directions on how to resolve them. My LO also had issues with weight gain and our Ped was great was giving specific pointers and instructions, although with tons of hand-outs and a referral to see a dietician and GI specialist.

I also agree that your son doesn't sound behind on his motor skills at all - he sounds totally normal! :)

I would be annoyed that she's not providing any more instruction or direction on his weight gain issue. It might be good to try out a new pediatrician! Good luck.

No, I don't think you're being ridiculous. It sounds like your pediatrician has concerns, but isn't addressing them well with you or offering you any guidance on how to address their concerns. I would definitely want a pediatrician that can be more concrete with what they feel your LO is "behind" in and actually offers up some solutions! Just telling you "he's not gaining enough" but not giving you any advice on how to help him gain more is USELESS!

I haven't been very happy with our pediatrician on the past couple of visits and I am seriously considering changing to a new practice. Hubs thinks I am over-reacting. So I want to see what other people think and if I am indeed over-reacting or being too...whatever...about this.

At D's 9-month appointment, the doctor told us that he hadn't gained enough weight (he'd barely gained 2 pounds in 3 months) and was underweight (he was 25% at 6m, 13% at 9). She also told us that he was behind on his gross motor development, but didn't elaborate on that, and after being told that he was underweight and that he had a heart murmur (which she VERY casually mentioned), I wasn't in the right frame of mind to ask for details.

Right before his 12-month appointment, we had him in because his penis looked irritated. They had to do 2 catheters on him because the first time they used the wrong size and didn't get a sample. The second sample came back inconclusive, so they sent the test out to a lab. That test came back negative, so we still don't know what the problem is, only that he responded to the antibiotics so "it must have been an infections somewhere."

And now at his 12 month appointment, he hasn't even gained 2 pounds again, and is now in 2% for weight at 19lb 13oz, so again they basically said he's not gaining enough weight, but gave no direction as to how to help him put on weight. He gets breafkast, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner of solids, plus breastfeeds first thing in the morning and at bedtime, plus he WAS getting 3 6oz bottles of breast/WCM a day at daycare. They told us to stop sending in so much milk cuz it's filling him up (even though he got the bottles AFTER the solids), so now I"m sending 6oz for lunch and 3oz for afternoon snack. Plus a sippy of water.

ANWAY. On top of that, the pediatrician also again said that he's behind, and only told us to "challenge" him. D JUST started crawling the week before he turned one. He will stand at his learning table or at the furniture, but doesn't cruise yet and very rarely pulls himself up. He'll walk with a walker. The pediatrician basically told us to stand him up in the middle of the room and just "let go." Anyway, I know that he's on the later end of the developmental milestones - I've suspected that for a while - but I don't by any means think that he's "behind," and it REALLY bothers me that they keep labeling him as such. I've spoken to daycare and they are not concerned, since they see kids all over the range.

I really loved the first pediatrician we had at the practice, but she has left, and I haven't really been happy with any of the other doctors we've seen because they just seem so blase about all this stuff. We are first-time parents, we don't know how this stuff is "supposed" to work...

Am I being ridiculous?
