I would. It's just one letter and if it makes you feel better about it, then it's worth it.

For spelling, like what you're describing, yes. But I wouldn't totally change lo's name!

I think you should do it if it really bothers you and you and dh are on the same page about it. My parents changed my name when I was two months old and I am so glad.

@travelgirl1: I can;t imagine A's name any other way either!

I don't think I would change the spelling of my LO's name, although it often gets mispronounced from reading it or misspelled from hearing it.....even though it is the most common spelling in French. It is just in English where people get confused, but I think LO will be okay.

In your case, I would do it if it really bothers you. The only person to consider is LO and if he can't spell it yet, then you still have time :)

@Mrs. Pen: we are changing a part of it but it keeps getting pushed to the back burner. But LO doesn't even know that par of her name is there so she won't miss it... I don't even see it as a big deal.

@Foodnerd81: well, honestly I think what propelled me to the "i" is that's how it was spelled when I found it in a baby book! I didn't see the "y" spelling until googling who else had the name. But I've never seen it spelled with an "i" except for my J. So I think I initially thought they were equally common spellings until he was already born and named.

@Mrs. Pen: Is the Y that much more common? Like, I wonder if just as many people would try to spell it with the I then anyway? I guess the baseball player does Y so probably more people would go with that.

To answer the question, spelling is something we thought a really long time about in general (I have one of those names that is always "With an I or an E?" so I wanted one that only had one way to spell it). So I wouldn't change her name, but there is only one way to spell it. Not sure what I would do in your situation!

Not after she was born, but DH and I talked long and hard over whether to spell it with one L or two. He won. But to be honest now I can't imagine it any other way.

I thought about this too. My LO's name is constantly misspelled. In the first year you can easily change it through the SS dept, after that I think it's harder.

@swedishfish: that's pretty much it. I like the more common spelling a lot better. I still don't even know why I went with the "i" instead of the "y" anyway. May have had to do with DH ;) Someone once told me that if a name ends with an "i" they think of it as feminine... and technically Cobi/Coby could go either way.

If it meant enough to you to deal with the hassle and the possibility that people could still spell it wrong the other way!

Not long after LO was born I started to regret hyphenating his last name because everyone who had to look up his name in a system complained about "oh the kid with the long name". It's not even that long. If we keep getting the comments I might be motivated to do it.

@Mrs. Pen: don't worry about what people think. Just tell them, if they ask, that it's something you thought about long and hard. You want to make the spelling of J's name the more common version to make it easier on him in the long run.

But how would I explain it to people??!

Or say the spelling of it?

I regret the spelling of my son's name. DH and I contested this for awhile, and I should have just gone with what I wanted... now he is 2.5 and I get annoyed when I write out his name because I want to write it with a different letter!

Would you ever change your LO's name or a part of it?
