i loved the timing of pregnancy and having a baby in january, but we live in a warmer weather place where i could go out right away! planning parties 2-3 weeks after christmas can get hectic, but from a gift perspective, i don't mind. we pick what we want to give for birthday and big christmas present and go from there! just keeps the season going a little longer for us!

I wouldn't, all other things being equal but mostly because of the weather where I live (rainy and cold; rather have maternity leave when it is warmer). With that said, I have a February birthday and have never minded

My DD and DH have birthdays in the first week of January and IT SUCKS! December is absolutely nuts between planning Christmas and Hannukah and then immediately planning their birthdays. I'm tapped out and just totally drained once its all over. It also sucks from a present buying perspective.

We have been trying for #2 for two months but made a conscious decision to take a break to avoid a December or January baby. I just don't want to go down that road again.

@littlejoy: This, exactly. We do the same thing - Want/Need/Wear/Read for Christmas, then usually 1 or 2 smaller gifts for birthday and a special day with each kid on or near their birthday. We also ask for experiences from family or ask that they contribute to their 529 accounts. And I agree that the worst part is having to have the birthday parties indoors. Maternity leave during the winter was kind of nice, because all you really want to do during the winter is snuggle up inside - bonus that you get to snuggle a newborn baby!

DD2 had a Jan due date (but was born in Dec). I wanted a summer baby but she happened early

DD1 was a Dec baby. I never wanted winter babies since I am one myself, but honestly having healthy babies are all I care about!

So my vote is go for it!

My son was due 1/11 and came 2 weeks early (12/29) and honestly, I hate it. It was so hard trying to find a date that all the family would be in town, plus his godparents because everyone travels for the holidays, that we just gave up and didn't have a birthday party. I am probably going to just do parties for 1/2 birthdays because its just too hard. (Not to mention, we already have 3 nephews with birthdays in the first week of Jan, plus all 3 of my siblings, my mom, and my self in Jan/Feb.)

As someone who has actually tried to avoid winter due dates, I'd recommend just going for it if you feel ready. In our case, I really wanted a warm season maternity leave but as things worked out, I miscarried our 2 spring babies and ended up with one in Oct and one at the very end of Nov (actually a Dec due date). Now that they are here, I don't really care about their birthday seasons. My own birthday is in Jan and it never really bothered me either (although to be fair, mine is later in the month).

Our three January kids birthdays are 1/10 and 1/22 (twins) and it's a non issue. We often just buy the gifts and then spontaneously decide when to give which.

@looch: I agree, school cutoffs are a bigger deal. I personally like that my kids (fall bdays) will be on the older end and winter would be a good time as well imo.

My son has a December birthday, but let me be clear, he is not short of presents! Every day is that kid's birthday, it's not like we only gave him stuff during that one month.

I think a bigger thing to think about is school cut offs, maybe that would impact decisions, at least it would if I were TTCing now.

@jodyblair: I just had a Jan 4 baby. It did stress me out worrying about a Dec, Christmas, bday. I think given where we both are, the weather isn't really that much of an issue. It was nice being huge pregnant in cooler months. I am dreading buying Christmas gifts and then two weeks later bday. Especially since it is our 2nd girl so we really don't need anything anyway. I don't think I would put off TTC again for the date if we were going to have another.

@jodyblair: We're thinking about it too (due date would be end of December) versus waiting a few months til it would be after flu season. I don't even worry about the holidays (except maybe ON the actual holiday, but such is life!) Been there, done that with birthdays and it honestly never bothered me.

Our LO has a January bday, and it being in close proximity (10 days) to Christmas isn't an issue at all - simply, it's just her bday, and that's that.

We aren't huge into gifts ... we do want/need/wear/read for Christmas, and encourage our parents to do 1-2 gifts for her (as opposed to the 40 they'd like to send). For her bday, we usually do a little party with friends + 1 gift and a special day for her. One thing we've started doing is asking for "experience" gifts ... having Christmas + a birthday in 1 week could be a bit overwhelming if you're getting 8,000 new presents. I look at it as a way to simplify and keep things about the celebration vs. the gifts. Plus, it's an excuse to purge old toys to donate.

I will say, the only slightly annoying part is that we will always have to plan indoor parties, which can get expensive (whereas an outdoor party at a park would be free).

Our friends were Due 1/16, and their baby was born on 12/31, so you never know. ;)

My stepdaughter's birthday is the first week of January. I will say it sucks from a gift-buying/giving perspective (like we just bought her all this stuff for Christmas now we have to do birthday). It's just a lot in a short amount of time. But I don't know if it's enough of an annoyance that I'd put off TTC because of it.

I had a December baby and I liked the timing. I liked not having to bundle baby up every day because my maternity leave took up a good part of the winter. I liked that he was a fun age by the time the weather was warm and we were out and about a lot. His birthday is closer to Thanksgiving than any other holiday but we always do a special celebration for him. I didn't time either of my kids' birthdays, I didn't want that kind of pressure and I can't think of an ideal time to have a baby if I did try to choose one.

I have a dec and Jan baby, with Christmas sandwiched in between. So far, a non issue and I enjoy it because it makes the winter fly by with all the festivities (my birthday is in nov and dh is feb). I figure if my girls want pool parties or to go to an amusement park for their birthday party, I'll throw them a party in the summer and call it a half birthday party! Why not? I say go for it

We have a Jan. 19th birthday, so not super close to the holidays, but if I could choose I probably wouldn't do a mid-winter baby again. That's because of the weather though, it's hard to feel cooped up with a newborn in the cold and snow! Of course this all depends on where you live.

My babies are both summer birthdays (one still cooking), but like @PeaceLily: I also have a Christmas Eve birthday and haven't had any issues with it. My parents did celebrate a "half birthday" with a cake in June (but no presents or party) and made a point to have parties the weekend before the holidays so people could attend. If anything, no one forgets my birthday because the date is so memorable.

Last year when we started trying we didn't want a January due date not because of the holidays, but because both our nieces and nephew were all born in January. We still tried in April though, but I didn't get pregnant until July. I lost that baby in November at 19 weeks and we are trying again. I'd be thrilled with a January due date this time around. I just want to be pregnant again.

In regards to being close to the holidays, my birthday is December 24th and DH's birthday is December 26th. I actually really like having my birthday on Christmas eve, it's such a happy time of year. My parents always made sure to keep my birthday totally separate from Christmas, but my husband's parents were guilty of giving him birthday/Christmas gifts. Overall we both like having our birthdays during the holidays though.

DH and I are planning to TTC baby #3 next month. According to my calendar, if we conceive, baby would be due the first week of January. Those of you with early January babies, does it bother you that your child's birthday is so close to the holidays? I love birthdays and would hate for my child to feel like they're missing out because their birthday is so close to all the other major holidays. I realize it's possible the baby could be late or we won't conceive the first month, but I've previously delivered at 38 and 39 weeks and both of our boys were conceived the first month of trying. Am I overthinking this? Should we just go for it? 😂
