while the birth center sounds nice, IMO a midwife you love is a million times more important than having the birth center. I would only switch if you love the new midwife as much as the old one. In my experience, person > location. I delivered at a hospital not known for being natural-friendly but I had a great experience because I was surrounded by a great team.

I loved the birth center I went to, which was in a hospital. It was really a peaceful and supportive environment. I ended up having to have more interventions (epidural, pitocin, other pain medication) than I had planned, and almost had to have a C-section, but all of that was as available at the birth center as it would have been in a regular hospital. I had a healthy, uneventful pregnancy, so I wasn't too worried about the availability of advanced NICU care (beyond what was available where I delivered). I'd say unless there is a strong medical reason to choose the hospital and the birth center offers what you anticipate you'll need, go with the birth center.

As a FTM yes I would choose the birth center experience because a med-free birth is what I was going for. The hospital where I gave birth via cesarean had a tub in the room, but my obgyn practice did not allow for that service. So you have two decisions to make- not just where, but also who delivers your baby.

All the prep work I did for a med-free birth helped me have a somewhat calming cesarean experience, but if I could do it all over again I would have researched peaceful cesarean and discussed that as much as my med-free desires.

@nana87: Thats crazy the hospital has a L&D floor and a birth center!

@themrsgoff: A lot of hospitals are now putting in birth centers. So you are at a hospital if anything happens (I think ours actually has its own OR). In our case the main hospital here in town had the birth center and the NICU. The other regular hospital just had a maternity wing. It was a very obvious choice for us.

I will tour both but I went ahead and got an appointment with a midwife at the birth center. My friend said they book up really fast because space is limited so it is better to go in now. Hopefully by the time of my appointment she will be able to give me a positive confirmation

I could always switch back to my old midwife if I wanted.

@anya I have thought, "what if I hate the tub and then I switched midwives for no reason."

Yes! I had 2 amazing births at a birthing center and then lost all trust in the same birthing center for my 3rd and had to birth in a hospital. A hospital birthing center sounds cool!

I wouldn't do anything other than a hospital for the simple reason that if something were to go wrong, and I lost my baby due to not being in a place or with a provider equipped and prepared to take immediate action to save his/her life, I'd never be able to forgive myself.
I had my son in a hospital and while there are things I intend to do differently the next time around (get off monitors and walk around, labor in the tub, etc) overall it went very well and I was grateful for the assurance that there were providers who could care for HIM should something go wrong. The mother is only one factor and while comfort is important, there's the wellbeing of the infant to think of also. To each their own.

I chose a hospital with a birthing center, but both births ended up on the regular l/d floor because I needed inductions. But, I think choosing an ob that is willing to work in a birthing center was a huge plus even though I wasn't able to birth there--she was very patient about my labor progress (my first took 36 hours, second was 16) and didn't push any medical interventions before I was ready (both labors I was on pitocin about 12 hours before asking for an epidural).

I really enjoyed my hospital birth experience, it wasn't loud and no one pushed anything on me. I wanted to make sure I could have pain relief so a hospital was a requirement for me. My daughter wasn't breathing when she was born and the NICU team was in our room in less than a minute after being called down. I hadn't had any issues with my labor so it was a complete surprise. I'm scared to think what would have happened if that had happened at a birth center without a NICU team to rush in.

If I liked the midwife, absolutely. This is what I did and I loved it. The hospital wasn't as fancy or modern feeling as some of the more traditional hospitals, and the birthing center was very small. Additionally, they didn't really have the capacity to deal with emergencies (aside from a last minute c-section) so some issues would have warranted a transfer if they had come up. So...those are all factors to consider! Fortunately, none of them ended up being issues. I had an incredible experience and would do it again in a second!

I chose a birthing center in a hospital, and had a wonderful experience both times. But since you already like your midwife I would definitely give the hospital a chance and tour it. You will be seeing the midwife a lot and only stay in the hospital once!

@oldschooolmama: my regular hospital experience sounds similar to what others are describing was available at their birthing center. And I had to have a c sec so would have ended up there anyway! But agree that I'd take a tour bc not all hospitals are alike.

Birthing centers are great, but definitely tour both if you can, esp if you love your current midwife. FWIW I had two unmedicated births in a "regular" hospital and had a great experience both times. Also, laboring in the tub did nothing for me, but the shower was magical. Anyway, I think having providers you love and trust- dr/midwife, doula, nursing staff- is the most important factor, followed closely by your environment.

I really would not even consider giving birth in a regular hospital if you have the option of doing a hospital birthing center. Birthing centers are so so nice. Just a couple days ago my friends who gave birth in regular hospitals were talking about their hospital births and it sounded awful, they were saying how unbelievably loud it was and they needed earplugs and there was no way to control the lighting so that was glaring all the time. My room was quiet as can be, totally private, I loved the hot tub, tons of natural light or dimmable lamps throughout the room, my own sound system I could hook my phone to, all kinds of tools to help with labor, etc.

Can you tour both?

I really love our hospital birth center. Its designed for birth (tubs in room) plus they have other supplies like yoga balls, mirrors, rocking chair, peanut ball, etc. Its also nice when laboring and we were walking the halls to know we weren't around a bunch of other sick people

Absolutely. I labored in a hospital with access to a tub for my second and it was amazing. It really helped me to finish dilating and accelerated my labor (which was stalled because she was in a bad position).

I'm only TTC but in the mean time I'm doing a little research on hospitals in the area. I've narrowed it down to two final options. I currently see a midwife but she is affiliated with the regular hospital. I'm thinking about switching to a new midwife so that I can go to the birthing center. I love the idea of being able to labor in a tub which I can not do at the regular hospital. I also would like to have a med-free birth but I think that could just as easily happen at the regular hospital too. I'm torn.

What do you think?
