I hyphenated my name after marriage and we gave our LO my husbands name. I wouldn't hyphenate LO's because I personally find my own name so long and a pain to explain to people. Then again I hyphenated because my husbands last name is the same as my first so I wanted the ability to go by my maiden name professionally.

We never considered hyphenating, but we did include my maiden name in my LO's middle name.

no hyphenated name here. and my babies won't get one either. firstly, don't think my husband would ever accept it. secondly, it sounds weird.

I hyphenated my last name. We decided that my maiden name will be our LO's middle name, and will have husband's last name.

@MsMini: it definitely affects clearance. I'm dealing with this now. The good news is, it just means I can't change my name at work until my new clearance comes through. It doesn't cause a lapse in clearance :)

We have separate last names. He has his and I kept mine, although I will eventually hyphenate when I don't have to deal with the military paperwork anymore (because we lives overseas, it makes it 10x more complicated to change my name). The LO will just have his name.

I took my DH's last name, so our children will have the same. But, I had my son with my ex, and I REALLY wish I would have hyphenated his last name. I still regret not doing that.

I took my husband's last name and our kids will have it too. I am still a little attached to my maiden name but hubby's last name is more unique and I like that.

We didn't and even though Mavrick has both our names we opted not to hyphen so he can choose to drop one along the way.

Neither of us do. In our area growing up, I don't think anyone grew up with a hyphenated name, although I'm sure there must have been SOMEONE.

When we got married I made the decision to take his last name (and relegate my maiden name to a middle name).

My youngest sister however, she was given a hyphenated name because our mom and her dad couldn't agree on one name or the other. He insisted she have his name, and mom said that since they weren't married, that wasn't going to happen. the compromise was hyphens.
I don't know what my sister will end up doing later in life, that will be interesting to see.

@mrbee: No, he kept his name as is (he works for a defence contractor, and was concerned it would impact his security clearances). He also didn't care if I took or hyphenated my name, he would have been just as happy if we both kept our names, and gave our kids a hyphenated name, so hyphenating was my idea entirely.

I never considered hyphenating because two Asian names together sound too Asian-y...You know? I just took hubs' last name.

I have a hyphenated last name now, though it took me getting pregnant before I actually decided to do it. We are going to pass my hyphenated last name onto our kids. I kind of assume in the future they they would drop the first part of the name and go with the more unique second portion, but that would be up to them.

Do you, your SO, or your LO have a hyphenated name?

If so, there's a fascinating article in today's NYT about how "Children of the Hyphens" are dealing with hyphens for their kids' names:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/24/fashion/babies-surnames-to-hyphenate-or-not.html?pagewanted=all

Best quote: Growing up, I constantly fielded the question, “What will you do if you marry someone else with two last names? Will your kids have four names?”

Would you (or did you) consider hyphenating your LO's last name?
