Dd is not picky at all. She will eat pretty much anything except for mashed potatoes. If she says she doesn't like something, it's because she truly doesn't. She will at least try everything. She loves to eat!!

Ds is only 8 months so I don't know about him yet.

@skipra: For real.....my son ate a new food during the evaluation. Just walked up and ate it, like it was no big deal. I was 1/2 amazed and 1/2 pissed. Like, are you doing this on purpose child?? haha. But seriously, it's strange. They do the exact same techniques I was trying at home, but they work for them and not for me. He is getting to the point where he gets very proud of himself for trying new foods and is gaining confidence. He's even tried one of his major gag/trigger foods (pasta) and taken a few successful bites. It's been wonderful. I hope it works for your son too!!

@ValentineMommy: Thanks for letting me know that! We went to our evaluation and they recommended therapy. It was amazing just at the evaluation he was more willing to touch and play with food than at home. I am cautiously optimistic that it will help.

@skipra: We are in the same boat. DS1 has a sensory issue, only pertaining to food. We started taking him to therapy, and since going, he's tried 85 new foods! It's crazy how much it's helped.

I would say no. DS is a pretty good eater despite the days he doesn't want to eat in general.

Hoping DD will be a great eater too!

Super picky. Like @skipra, we currently have DS in food / eating therapy because we finally got his GI issues under control. We're so exhausted having to bring food everywhere because he only eats a few things.

No, I wouldn't call my kids picky. It seems like they've both outgrown it. Not saying that they will eat everything that's out there, but it's not a battle to get them to eat what I cook and we eat almost every meal at home.

Mine are both fairly picky, unfortunately, and I think I serve a pretty wide variety of foods. DS is afraid of vegetables, but he's at the age where he understands and follows the "must try everything" rule, so at least there's that. DD is odd. If she is really hungry, she will eat pretty much anything. If she's not, you could try to give her chocolate and she still wouldn't eat it. She consistently doesn't like meat, cheese and eggs, but will eat more veggies than her brother.

It really seems like it depends on the day. Sigh. Some days he's willing to try anything and other days, forget about it! Overall I consider him a pretty good eater but there are definitely days that I can't figure him out: like one day he'll eat a ton of something and a few days later he refuses the same exact thing. :/

No. She's finicky in that she'll eat something one day and not the next. But I feel like given her age she eats a good variety of food. And she likes veggies more than I do.

DD is definitely picky. I can't get her to even try a bite of most foods, no matter how much I try to enforce it. The only veggie she eats is carrots, and freeze dried peas and edamame.

@skipra: wow! Sounds exactly like my son. We noticed problems when we tried to transition from purée to chunkier foods. He doesn't eat pasta or Mac and chees for that matter. I thought that was a staple in kids diet 😀 we thought he had a sensory/texture issue as well but the OT and ST don't think so. We've only had one visit with them so far and go back in 6 weeks so we'll see where this goes.

No - I really can't complain. She doesn't eat a lot of what DH and I eat, but she eats well for a 3 yr old. Every fruit I can think of, some veggies, and chicken. Hates pasta and potatoes though!

LO1 is the definition of picky eater but I actually think it is a sensory issue. He has had issues with food since he was a baby and has always only eaten a very limited diet. We finally FINALLY got him to try some new foods (for example: pasta) and he gags before it even touches his lips. Previously he just refused food. We are going to see a feeding specialist.
To make up for that LO2 will eat pretty much anything.

My oldest is absolutely an incredibly picky eater. We recently took him to a feeding clinic for help. We have a long road ahead of us but it's very frustrating.

I do get a little frustrated when my kids won't try something, but for the most part they will. I know kids can be finicky with foods but I wouldn't say my kids are picky. Picky to me is my niece, she literally will only eat 4-6 things and half of it is crackers of some sort. I have no idea how she survives, she hasn't touched one fruit or veggie since she was an infant.
