We left the baby in the house asleep buckled in her carseat for 5 minutes while we were three houses down getting the dog. We could see our house and knew nobody was going in and knew she couldn't walk out so I felt okay doing that. I would also feel okay giving our neighbor the video monitor while she was outside doing yard work or with us doing yard work but I wouldn't feel comfortable with her in her house and us gone. I feel like that is way, way to risky. </p> <p>I would maybe consider this for a much older child like 10. What if the monitor failed? I'd much rather pay the neighbor to come over to my house. I have no problem whatsoever going outside and doing yard work or something like that while she's napping. We don't have a monitor so I just crack her window and listen.<br /> I have left my 11 year old son with her while she's napping, I've only gone a few blocks to the post office, 5 minutes at the most. She would go pick her kids up from school (which was about 3 blocks) and leave the monitor with the elderly neighbor. I would leave a video monitor with someone in my building (6 units, 3 floors) while I did something. Doesn't seem different than being in a big house and in a different area than baby. I also would be fine going next door (provided it was super close) or out in the yard with older kids while baby slept with a video monitor. If the power went out would know because the video monitor would cut out, if an alarm went off you'd hear it, if you have a dog you'll know if anyone tries to enter the house- plus you can see the house. I've gone to parties in buildings where people have brought their baby monitor with them because they didn't see a point in hiring a sitter to sit directly above them while the baby slept when all they had to do was walk upstairs to the baby if it woke. I wouldn't go down the street, but next door I would. Before we had Cobi I would drop him off and pick him up from work so I could have the car for the day, but since he often works til 10:30 this was no longer an option with a baby who goes to bed between 7-8pm. </p> <p>There have been soooo many times I wish I could ask the neighbors in our apartment to listen on the monitor while I drive a mile to pick up DH, which would allow me to have the car for the day. As it is I'm home alone 24/5 in the winter because we have to share a car, in the summer he bikes/walks to work. </p> <p>Anyway, we don't know our neighbors so we don't do this.
