@mrbee: we do a rice bag too. We heat ours just until it is slightly warm and put it in her spot in the crib to warm it, and then rest it next to her back once we put her to bed. Once she is out I take it out of the crib.

Now that LO is rolling and moving we wont be doing this anymore.

NO, I will not be putting something is electrically heated in my child's crib at night just so they'll sleep.

@NaturallyCathy: I don't even own one nor have I ever used one, so probably not. Maybe if I was absolutely desperate and someone I knew swore by it, lol, but by then I wouldn't be thinking clearly!

Nooo! Not only is the cord dangerous, but I've seen severe burns from heating pads in the veterinary world, severe enough to be fatal! And these guys have a protective later of fur, not sensitive baby skin.

I've used a small stuffed animal with rice in it and kept it at a very low warm temp (lay it on my wrist). I can't say it really helped too much, but is one of my fall backs for when I get desperate.

@Foodnerd81: Olive responds really well to the rice sock! But for the record, I don't heat it up... it's the (light) weight of it that seems to comfort her. I think she thinks it's our hand on her back...

There are so many issues I have with this! The suffocation risk, the strangulation risk, the electrocution risk! YIKES. Thanks but no thanks for the tip stranger lady!

Nooope. I get overheated just using a heating pad on my back, so I'm going to be pretty wary of anything that suggests using one near LO, even on low!

I don't generally think infant sleep needs to be "fixed" so I wouldn't try much of anything. lol On the note of a heating blanket though, G sometimes sleeps with one b/c he gets really bad growing pains (they'll keep him up all night without it). It always makes me really nervous, but it's the only thing we've found that works. He's much older though, I would never do that for a small child.

Nope, I wouldn't. I won't even sleep with a heated blanket for me, much less my baby. Not to mention, aren't there cords for both heating pads and blankets?

But I think MrsBee has posted about the sock filled with warm rice trick, which I think might have similar reasoning.

DH and I were out shopping this past weekend with both kids in tow (DS, 15 months; DD, 2 months) when we were approached by a woman pushing a cart with what looked to be a four year old in her cart. At the time, DH was pushing DD around in her stroller/car seat and I had DS in the shopping cart. DH was a little ahead of me when the woman stopped him and told him what a beautiful baby he had, and asked how old 'he' was. (In the woman's defense, DD was in a green jumpsuit and had nothing that said 'girl' around her). I told her that 'she' was 2 months old and DH just smiled and started to move on.

The woman, however, stopped him again by telling us both that the girl in her cart was her fifth child. She then asked me if DD always slept like that and slept well at night (WHY DO PEOPLE ASK THAT?!). When I laughed lightly and said no, trying to move us along again, she said that she had a trick that would work. An old wive's tale, she said, that her grandmother told her that worked wonders on all her kids. Apparently, you swaddle the infant in a receiving blanket, leaving the feet bare. Then you cover the feet with a towel and on top of the towel, place a heating blanket/pad on low and just keep it turned on all night. She said that the heat would simulate the body warmth that emanates from you and that the baby would sleep longer. Works like a charm, she said, all her kids slept through the night.

After finally disentangling my family from this woman, we moved on and continued our shopping but her words stuck with me. And the more I thought about it, the more I could see it going horribly, horribly wrong. She did hazard us to make sure it was a new heating blanket and not an older one, but still - this sounds like a really bad idea. I don't think even at my most desperate that I would try this.

Would you try this 'old wives' trick?
