We live on a busy trucking route/old highway. No problem for us unless the local college kids are drag racing down the street (wish I was kidding about this one). However it only happens a few times in the summer before the school and students get the memo from law enforcement.

We lived on a busy street in Chicago and now in Indy our street is "busy" to most but we think it's totally not bad. It's kind of nice because we face out from the subdivision and don't get pulled into some of the drama. The Chicago street was nice because we were close to everything and easy to get to public transport but b.c we were on the 3 and 4th floors it wasn't too loud. We've had some friends live near hospitals and that is the loud stuff with all the sirens all the time! We did get used to rumbling/city noise and my son can sleep just about anywhere now.

Our place in Indy, the street is busy but we may have to wait like one minute to pull out of our driveway. It's really just not that big of a deal.

We live on a busy street. It isn't my favorite, but isn't a deal breaker either. Some cons:

1. Road noise is the biggest. When the windows are open in the front we hear everything. If some punk in a car decides to rev their engine and scream up the road it's freaking annoying. Also, DH has determined he has a hearing issue, and living here makes it worse for him.

2. We're not in a community. This is a bummer for E, as she can't go meet neighborhood kids.

I'm not concerned about her running out into the road because there's a rock wall between us. I suppose she could always go down the driveway, but there's steps in the way, so that's a bit of a buffer.

In our situation there's a traffic light nearby, so that stops traffic and allows us to exit. There's also a turning lane, so if coming from the other direction we can pull into that and not block traffic while waiting to turn into our driveway.

There's a small old mill/factory behind our house with a parking lot, so that's where people park if here for a party, and where E can ride her bike when she's older.

Absolutely not. This was a deal-breaker for me when we bought out house. It was hard too, because the majority of houses in our price range were on busy streets. And they were normally the "flipped" houses too, with new kitchens and baths - probably because they are impossible to sell otherwise.

I did compromise on having a view of a busy street from our backyard. Our property doesnt border it but we can see and hear the traffic. Nothing i can do about the noise, but we are doing heavy landscaping this summer to block the view. It's really not that bad though, we have an acre of yard in the back so the view is from far away.

This was an absolute deal breaker for us. We found a house that was absolutely perfect for us, and a great deal in an excellent school district, but it was on a busy road so we didn't get it.

Definitely not. I've never really lived on a busy street in my life and when I went to uni my room was right overlooking a main road into town and it was so hard to get to sleep in the Summer when I needed the window open! Plus with LO I'd worry about her escaping and running out into the road.

A lot of houses in this area are super close to the M4...there is an estate that we looked at because I didn't realise how close it was to the motorway but when we got there I was like wow how do people live there? It was so loud and from the garden I looked up and could read all of the motorway signs.

In an urban apartment, I wouldn't care so much.

But if I moved to the 'burbs then there is no way I would buy a house on a street that would attract traffic beyond the local residents, their local guests, and the mailman.

Basically, I would trade a safe, quiet street for more walkability, but not for any other reason.

We live on one of the busiest streets in NYC, probably even one of the busiest in the country. It has it's pros and cons but I don't hate it. Very noisy at times and lots of traffice (esp now with a 2 year construction project :bummed: ). But it's also pretty convenient.

Is used to live on a busier road (think 2 lanes in each direction, 60 kph speed limit). Not so busy that I ever worried about being able to get into/out of my driveway, but the noise was unreal. You couldn't hear the TV or have a conversation with the window open. I know now live 3/4 of a block away from an even busier street and it's so much better. You hear noise in the distance, but it's more like a hum.

We're about to be renting just off of a very busy street and we're really excited because of the area. I think with apartments it's ok but I probably wouldn't love it for a single family home. On the other hand, if it were the right city/location, I might do it!

Nope. That was a deal-breaker for us. We wouldn't even consider a home on a main road, even if it had everything we were looking for.

Yes. We live on a small highway that feeds into a big highway. But we live downtown in a 100 year old home in a completely walkable neighborhood which was worth it. We are completely fenced in with an automatic gate, and even though the bedroom is in the front of the house with a fan on I rarely hear road noise. We are also a block and a half away from a college campus so there is a lot of foot traffic.

ETA I would much rather be a block off if I had the choice.

We used to, but this was a luxury high rise in a major city, so we didn't have a HUGE issue with road noise (we were high enough up and the glass was triple pAned).

We had to be vigilant with LO but she wasn't walking much at that point anyway - we used the stroller or Ergo. Being so close to lots of public transportation options and several grocery stores was a HUGE convenience factor.

Our house is on a busier street - it's not my favorite thing about the house but the rest of the features of the house (completely updated and walking distance to train) made it worth it. I also don't have any issues with noise, but I was moving from Brooklyn so anything would have been quieter  We also have a large backyard that faces the woods. As for resale, I think it totally depends on the neighborhood and the current market - there was a bidding war for our house so clearly people were not deterred.

@Cherrybee: I know it was a deal breaker for us, too. As most PPs said, it's too stressful and noisy for our taste. We also have two dogs, and one time one of them got out of our fenced in backyard. She ran all the way across the street (she's 12 lbs and probably not even 10 inches tall, so thats far for her!) and hid under a bush until we found her. I was so glad that day that we live on a quiet street with hardly any traffic!

No way! DH and I have discussed this a few times... we would definitely never buy on a high-traffic road. Pulling in and out of the driveway would be stressful, especially in the winter when the snowbanks are higher than my car. Plus, noise and worry about a kid or my dog running into the street.

We did when we rented, but I wouldn't buy. It was really loud (pre-kids) and I am sure I would have gotten tired of it after a few years. We only lived there for a year.

I would not. We used to live on a pretty big street but our house was in a gated community so we were far enough back that noise wasn't an issue. Now we are on a semi busy street and I still don't like how fast cars drive- scares me with the LOs and I hate street parking. The other issue is if you have buses going by- loud and the exhaust is horrible (luckily they don't on our street).
