Lol my first thought was no. But if I had my heart set on what I was about to make, & if it smelled/ looked okay- I probably would still use it. Good luck :)

When I worked at a homeless shelter, the food pantry would pass out canned goods six months past sell by date.

Post tomorrow and let us know how it goes! :silly:

@NCSUchick27: I totally eat past the sell-by date too, and love this thread!!

Two years though, you are braver than me! I don't have a food science background... just a general cheapness/laziness + iron stomach.

I would, but probably not while pregnant just in case. But expiration dates are actually "best by" dates. As in, it might not taste as good (chips might have gone stale, etc), but it's almost always fine to eat well after the date. Canned good especially. They have to put something, but it doesn't mean it's bad after that. I've read a lot of articles about that (of course, I didn't save any of them), so it's not something I worry about. Even milk I'll drink a few days after the date, IF it seems 100% fine. (And I trust my sense of smell.)

@NeekieRose: But according to your chart, they should be used within 2 years after their "best before" date.

A "sell by" date would be earlier than the "best before." (so I would expect the food would last longer from the earlier date)

I had a question about jello and found a website that says how long past the expiration date you can eat something. According to that, you can do vegetable soup for 1-2 years past the printed date....so still sketchy.

Is it a "sell by" date and not an expiration date? If so, as long as it smelled/looked ok and was going to be cooked, it's probably fine.

"Canned goods. Highly acidic foods like tomato sauce can keep 18 months or more. Low-acid foods like canned green beans are probably risk-free for up to five years."
