Ha, wow, I wouldn't assume any wrongdoing on the restaurant's part! Especially with norovirus. She's aware that's not food poisoning, right? It's so contagious, there's not much that can be done. It might have even been a diner who brought it in and exposed people.

@aprild: I definitely think it's likely a case of bad luck as most outbreaks are! A restaurant cannot possibly know if a batch of tomatoes is bad, etc.
Does she avoid shopping at Costco since their hepatitis A scare? Or Trader Joe's with their E. coli break out? Those are large corporations who cannot control when things go wrong!
But to each their own, I guess.

I would, but I do have a friend that checks all the health inspection reports when we are picking out restaurants. Lol.

@Littlebit7: I'm with you. What an odd excuse from the friend. To each their own, but I wonder if she regularly checks all health inspector reports before eating out. Many restaurants have violations with no issues.

Well, sounds like she is set on not eating there; hope you're able to find a place with no healthcode violations lol :silly:

@aprild: how does she know there was a flagrant disregard for following the rules? I like to think an outbreak like this really just was bad luck and no malice or corner cutting.

I would still go back there, but I can see how food borne illness can tank a restaurant.

@aprild: wow. Well yeah you might not be able to convince her if that is her reasoning. Although I'd be surprised that she eats out anywhere, honestly. Or goes to large hotels or public events. Or flies on airplanes. Basically any gathering of a large group of people in a confined space!! Ha. But seriously. I think most restaurants try pretty hard to follow the rules but some things are out of their control and occasionally it gets out of hand or exposed at an inopportune time.
One busboy doesn't wash his hands and basically an entire establishment can go under. And yet a doctor doesn't wash his hands after or before patient contact and nothing happens. Anyway. I digress.

Thanks for the responses! I talked to the friend some more about it, and she said she doesn't want to support a business that didn't follow health regulations when there are hundreds of other restaurants that do. I guess it's just something she feels strongly about, so we are going someplace else. But like all of you, I don't have a problem with it since it was so long ago. I don't think any restaurant is perfect, and you never really know what goes on behind the scenes

meh..... last week? I wouldn't go. If I was the one who got norovirous? I wouldn't go. But this was a random outbreak over 2 years ago and nothing since? I would have no problem with that!

Ya, I'd definitely eat there. My understanding is that when a restaurant has a food-born illness outbreak, along with the mandatory closing for deep cleaning, there is often an educational component for the employees to reinforce safe food-handling procedures, so this restaurant would probably be safer to eat at than the replacement you pick to appease your friend!

If I was someone who contracted norovirus there, I could see not going again (I feel that way about a place I ate right before I got it, and I'm not even sure if I got it there).

But several years later to have just heard of it? Eh. that's a little excessive. But if someone isn't going to have fun, I'd try to find somewhere else.

I'm planning a girl's night with some friends, and we decided to go to an Asian restaurant that is known for having delicious food and drinks. It's also very trendy and in a fun part of town. One friend looked up the restaurant online and saw it had been in the news a couple years ago because of a reported norovirus outbreak. They closed the restaurant for a couple days to disinfect everything before reopening and haven't had problems since. I actually knew about the outbreak, but I didn't think it was a big deal since it happened so long ago, but my friend said she isn't comfortable eating there, so we're going someplace else. I'm curious what others would do. The restaurant is always packed, so either people don't care or they don't know about the outbreak.
