@2PeasinaPod: that's how I feel too. Our politicians don't necessarily have to have the same exact experiences as us to relate to our needs and do what's best for us.

I would elect someone who was single. I don't think a politician needs to have a family in order to understand what families are faced with today. He/she is already part of a family whether they're a son/daughter, brother/sister, uncle/aunt. While they may not understand what it's like to be married with children, they're not completely ignorant to what their parents have struggled with or any other family for that matter. Would it be fair to say that a married candidate has no idea what it's like to be a single dad/mom to understand the issues that they face as well? Not every candidate has personal experience with every issue that affects the American people.

@daniellemybelle: haha, me too (about the TV show)!

I don't care what a person's marital or relationship status is. All I care about is whether I agree with most of their positions and whether I believe they have the intelligence, drive, and capability to do a good job.

I think a lot of divorces can happen when a person is "married to their job" which i think would happen a lot with politicians. They probably work long hours, travel a lot, and are hopefully passionate about certain causes and what they do. Sometimes family can get neglected in the fallout. No person is perfect, and not everyone can juggle the demands of a high profile career AND a family if they put too much emphasis on one. I'm okay with a politician who works so hard he or she forgets to make it home for dinner. Maybe not the most thoughtful person and i wouldn't want to be married to them, but that's not why I elected them.

I thought you meant a former contestant on the reality show! :silly:

I will admit that I prefer political candidates that are married with families because I feel like they understand the issues affecting American families.

Yes, Lindsey Graham is a bachelor. Who cares?
http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/04/opinions/cupp-lindsey-graham-bachelor/index.html

Some speculated former FL Governor Charlie Crist only married in order to seek higher political office- VP or Pres. Does marital status matter? Will Sen Lindsay Graham's single status hurt his chances to become President?
