Absolutely! I grew up both in the USA (several states) and in Albania, as did my DH. Our kids will likely spend most of their childhoods overseas. Although they will be homeschooled, not enrolled in foreign schools. DH and I were both homeschooled TCK's, and we still managed to pick up the language and culture just fine (most Albanians have no idea that DH is American), except we also know American history and government and other subjects we wouldn't have learned in a foreign school.

We are living abroad (Taiwan) and love being able to easily travel around Asia. We do go back to the U.S, during the summers. We are planning to send our son to local school during his elementary years so that he gets a good foundation in Mandarin Chinese. Right now he goes to a bi-lingual nursery school (mostly Mandarin, though) and can speak 3 different languages: English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese.

My husband (half Taiwanese, half French-Irish American) is a Third Culture Kid himself as grew up in different countries, and I traveled a lot as a child, so we really want our son to appreciate and understand different cultures. Oh, and my husband is also multilingual (he speaks 6 languages really well) and I've struggled to learn languages as an adult, so in that respect, we want our son to be more like his dad!

For sure. The husbone & I have discussed this at length & weould definitely be open to moving out of the country if the opportunity arose. He grew up living in Venezuela & Texas & travelled extensively when he was young & I don't think that it did anything but help him.

I live abroad and love it. I am here because I wanted to go abroad in college and didn't, so when it came time to decide where to live after I married my European husband, we chose Europe. It's been a tough transition, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. So yes, I'd strongly consider moving again.

DH and I lived in London together pre-LO and we moved back specifically to have kids. We wanted our kids to grow up with an American mindset and not a British one. So I guess we passed up the opportunity to raise our LO overseas...living in the UK wouldn't have helped her learn a new language anyway. Lol.

My husband and I live in tokyo now because of his job. Before this we lived in Bangkok for 3 years. Most of our expat friends are parents and their kids are very happy. They're almost all bilingual or trilingual ( English plus parents' native languages). Most of them go to international school, which is very expensive but usually the tuition is included in hubby's work contract. This way, if the parents ever decide to move back to their home country, the kids will be able to fit right into the school system.

We're really happy to have this kind of opportunity. Since we're in Asia, it's so easy to take little trips to other Asian countries because it's so close and affordable. Hubby's work contract also includes a free flight for the whole family to the States once a
year.

Culturally, it's great for kids. Most of our friends here are European, Japanese, or other Asians. I think their kids are more tolerant and knowledgable about other cultures and customs because their friends are so internationally diverse.

DH and I have discussed this, and we'd be up for moving overseas for a while until our kids hit about pre-teen/teenage years. DH was actually born in Germany, and lived there until he was three, and he got to experience so much! I'd love to have that opportunity for my kids. Plus, I don't living away from family would matter much to us. We're too independent for living close to family. :)

I would love love love to. I studied abroad and it was absolutely the best experience of my life. Whether or not we'll be able to do it with kids, I have no idea. Our jobs don't travel well right now.

Most definitely! If the right opportunities were available and hubby and I had our finances in order; we would love to raise our children (even temporarily) overseas. I think it is a great experience and adds a dynamic sense of culture to a child's life.

I absolutely would! I think it's an excellent experience; kids are resilient! I never lived overseas myself -- the most exotic I got was 1.5 years in Canada -- but I did live in several very different parts of the USA, and those experiences have shaped my life I think. Imagine what living overseas in truly different cultures could do for a child's outlook on life! Awesome.

@bluestriped bee makes an excellent point about family. I have always lived far away from family (growing up, etc) so oddly, distance from family didn't even cross my mind until I read her reply. That said, I do wish we lived closer to family, and I know this will always be an issue with us (since neither of our families have a chance of living in the same timezone), so I try not to let it affect our decisions too much.

I would! I did this as a kid (lived in Korea from age 10-17) and it was a great experience, although not always easy. I went to American school there though - I don't think I would have survived Korean school.

Maybe, if it was for a short time. I live on the west coast and my family is on the east coast, so it's definitely hard being that far away from family. Our families would probably kill us if we moved even farther away. Although, if I had the money, it would be nice to have a summer home somewhere in Europe or Asia. Or anywhere outside of the US.

Yes! I did it growing up! And I loved every second of it. Children are very adaptable, and don't have the pre-judgements that many adults have. Plus, they learn new languages very easily. I am now fluent in Spanish, which I use every day, even though I have moved back to the States.
Living overseas as a child was an INCREDIBLE experience!

I think that'd be super stressful, but I also believe that kids are very adaptable. If it would improve their language skills and was a necessity for work or a better life, I would do it! I love hearing stories from people who've lived all over the world as children. They're always so worldly and have so much to share!

lol my hubs and i joke that we'll have to move to another country when the u.s. falls. i wouldn't mind moving overseas and having my kids learn new languages and cultures, but i'm afraid i won't really be able to communicate with my kids if they learn a language i'm not familiar with.... like a lot of immigrants and their kids in the states.

I loved this article about two parents who moved to Russia and put their kids into a local school:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/magazine/my-familys-experiment-in-extreme-schooling.html?ref=global-home&pagewanted=all

The kids cried and cried, but now they are completely fluent in the language and the culture. Wow, what an experience! I would love for Charlie Bee and his sister to experience that some day. But it does impose a lot of pain on the kids during the transition... so maybe not.

I don't know. My mom went through this when she moved to America, although she had studied it before coming over. Plus she was an adult when she moved.

What do you guys think: would you ever move overseas and have your kids learn a new language and culture?
