I love our video monitor. I turn the volume way down (since our room is right next to LO) because she's a noisy sleeper.. but whenever she starts crying I can turn on the video to see if she's really crying, or just "sleep crying". When she's sleep crying it means I get 30 min. to an hour of extra sleep! :)

Baby will sleep in our room, so we're not getting one. As a former nanny, I think they're more useful when LO is older, so you can "check in" on them without them seeing you. I think we'll eventually get a video monitor for that reason. But not until probably 1 year.

Nope. We have a small apartment, and our baby is going to be sharing our room. The door to my bedroom comes right off of the living room and kitchen, and I will be able to hear her from any room in the place.

However, we are planning on moving some time this year to a house, and she'll have her own room, but we haven't even started really looking, let alone picked a place. So, maybe we'll need one, then.

We borrowed an Angel Care monitor from DH's sister but barely used even the audio monitor part even tho Miss A was in her own room from day three.

I found that hearing all her completely normal noises made me very anxious so it was better to not use a monitor. LO's bedroom is right next to ours so I can hear her if she needs me during the night and I can hear her from pretty much anywhere in the house during the day.

You can always wait a day or two before replacing your monitor and see how you go?

We rarely use our audio monitor and have never needed a video monitor. He is down the hall, and I hear him most of the time. Thus way, I can let him cry for a minute or two before jumping up to get him- I don't feel like he is going to wake up my husband as easily.

@babyjmama: We got a cheapo $75 video monitor. If you do decide to get a monitor again, I do suggest you get that one.... it's only $30 more then the audio monitor that we had (which we still do use when on vacation) but like I said, the video monitor is so nice for watching LO and not having to actually disturb her now that she's older and more aware.

we stopped using one for a while when charlie was older than 1. but in a way it comes in more handy when they're older and making mischief. if i were that close, i'd be fine without a monitor, but i'm obsessed with it because it tells me the temp in the room, and i'm OBSESSED with the temp!

We don't use a baby monitor as well. His bedroom is right down the hall from us. We can hear him with the door open at night. We had a pretty basic monitor which had too many feedback issues in our house. I'm a light sleeper, so I hear him well. Also, if he sleeps well, I still wake up at night and check on him.

We didn't get a monitor initially. Our apt isn't that big and I "knew" that once past the newborn stage P's cry would get bigger and I would most definitely hear her. Well, her cry never did get big and at 4 months I finally went and got a cheapy one so I could hear her while downstairs.

Our LO's room is right next to ours as well and we've never used our audio monitor at night. We even sleep with a fan on so that I DON'T hear every little peep he makes.

I couldn't live without our video monitor though. We didn't get it until LO was 5 months old and I don't know how we lived without one before! We have the Foscam ($90!) which I purchased based on recommendations from these boards.

Our LO's room is right next to ours too and we can hear her just fine. We were gifted a basic Sony monitor for our shower so we use it anyway, although I know I will hear her without it. I did want a video monitor but it just isn't in the budget right now. The reason I want a video one is so when I need to let her fuss/cry (she has everything she needs), I can still see her. I think if you slept better without it on, there is no reason you should need one. You heard LO wake up, and trust me, if LO is crying you will hear them :)

I think I'll talk to DH and see what he thinks. Not that (in this case) his opinion matters much, he could sleep through J screaming if they were on the same pillow. *sigh.

In your case I think it's fine not to use one. My mom didn't use one for us! We're close to LO's room but I still feel better using one because I'm a heavy sleeper so I like to make sure I'll hear her wake up.

Also it got to the point where I wanted to be able to see her, not just hear her because she was getting her limbs caught in the crib so at 8 months we gave in and got a video monitor. Now I don't know how we lived without it.

I ask because our room is right next to J's, his head hits the matress about 10-12 feet from where mine does, we leave the doors open so I can hear everything. The monitor died last night and I noticed that I could still hear him and get him this morning. I actually slept better because I didn't wake up every time the space heater turned on in his room. Thoughts? Am I going to miss something important? I feel confident in the fact that I'll hear him, I haven't slept a whole night since he was born, but I feel....wrong...? not using one.
