For instance, my dog was technically a "birthday present" for my 5th birthday, but we had been talking about getting another dog for over a year (our other dog died when I was not yet 4, and I'd proved my responsibility with pets with a hamster who unfortunately died). We had him for sixteen years until he died of old age and he was my best friend.
