as a gift for christmas? probably not, and especially not as a lesson about gifts.

i'd give them cardboard boxes throughout the year to play with though.

I don't think it is harsh, but i probably wouldn't give a cardboard box. DH and i talked about how we would probably only give 1-2 gifts to our kids when they are older, so they dont expect xmas to be a time to cash in on gifts.

@sorrycharlie: my parents declared no gifts one year at all - and I remember crying and crying when I had to watch all of my cousins open gifts and I sat there with nothing. I understand what they were trying to do - but as a kid I didn't understand/care and it wasn't fair I had to watch everyone else open them.

If it's a 1-2 year old kid- no big deal, but an older child? I think that's mean! I won't ever do a no gifts on Christmas policy.

I think there's a more effective way to get the message across than giving a child the equivalent of what I'd give my cats to play with

I agree! Maybe a 1 year old wouldn't know or care, but I would have been heartbroken as a child thinking Santa forgot me that year. Maybe materialistic but true! Haha

Um yeah, what Mr. Bee said. I don't think giving them a box teaches anything.

Why do gifts at all then? You could always volunteer as a family instead... or something along those lines!

DHs old co-worker gave her two kids a large cardboard box for Christmas one year, and nothing else. Her point was to show them it's not about gifts, which is great! However, is feel really bad, considering gifts come from Santa, in our family. I think I would think of a different way to teach the lesson, rather than just giving them a box.
