Statistically I've heard that men are more likely to sexually abuse children....? And you can do all the background checks and references you want, but usually abuse is a horrifying unanticipated surprise....

DH is a SAHD and does a great job and has to put up with a lot of gendered nonsense from people who assume women can take better care of children than men. Outside of breatfeeding, which a female nanny wouldn't be doing anyway, what the hell is the difference?

Hire the most qualified candidate. Check their references and background.

We hired a nanny when DS was 0-11 months old. While she helped us out I didn't enjoy that experience at all. I figure that I am a much more "specific" kind of mom and I want my child to be raised my way...

I do not think we would ever hire a nanny again, and if we ever need a babysitter, I would still prefer female. I can't trust a man. Wasn't there a certain study that there is a bigger chance for male to be a pedophile than female (or did I misread)? I don't trust strangers with my child let along adding that chance in the mix.

I would, but DH would veto. My bro had a male nanny at one point and so did two brothers that lived on my street growing up. Seems normal to me.

@MoonMoon: funny to see my old thread revived! So this was four years ago and what's funny is that only about six months after I posted this thread, we hired a manny!! It was someone we knew, and I loved it. He's my son's best friend to this day and it was a wonderful fit. He lacked some qualities in a nanny I would have liked, like basic cleaning up after their meals/play time. But that was neglible.

I think for most people its preference in the same way someone may prefer a female/male nurse. But we had a good experience so I'd do it again!

The ONLY person I would feel comfortable with as a nanny is our sitter who is a man! He is one of DH's buddies and actually used to be a manny before they started working together. I have known him for years and totally trust him. I probably would not hire a male or female nanny that I didn't already know very well (or put my kid in a home daycare) because I would rather my girls be somewhere with cameras, multiple teachers, and strict rules.

@MoonMoon: because of course any guy that wants to take care of kids must be a pedophile. Seriously though, I'm with you I dont get the issue. I dated a guy who was a manny and he was great! I know a few SAHD who watch 1-2 other kids and they are also great. It's sad that women don't want to be discriminated against in the workplace but then turn around and would do the same.

@MoonMoon: @erinbaderin: Agreed, I would be ok with it. I can definitely understand the reasons why people would be uncomfortable with hiring a male nanny, and I think I've also been conditioned to find it strange and that might also be my first instinct. However, at the same time, as a woman in a predominantly male profession, I have a lot of sympathy for people who struggle to be accepted in a career that they are passionate about because of their gender. There are message boards on the internet with people talking about how women have contributed nothing of worth to my profession, got where they were by sleeping around, just aren't as good as men because they are too focused on their kids, etc and on occasion these attitudes come out IRL as well. As someone who has worked super hard to be good at my job, it sucks that some people discount people like me just because we're not men. And the fact that it is so deeply ingrained also makes me worry that we have a long ways to go in this regard. So I would try not to do the same towards a guy who works in childcare.

@MoonMoon: I'm thinking the same thing! I don't understand why this is even a question. If I was hiring somebody to take care of my kids I would hire the person who I had the best vibe with and who I felt most comfortable with. Nanny, manny, tranny, I don't really care. (I'm not sure if tranny is a word that's ok to use but in this instance it's a contraction for transvestite nanny so I hope it's ok)

DH is asleep but I'm looking at au pairs and there are a few mannies. I need to ask him in the morning. They are almost all from Europe. I think DH could like it. He could be another 'bro' in the house. Haha. Though, hopefully they take their jobs seriously and respect my decisions.

I've had nannies but I'm thinking there might be less drama with a man. My nannies have been young but almost all of them were great with my kids and no drama. I'm just considering it. Not ruling it out at the moment.

I voted for neither also.

I prefer that DS spend his days with other kids and don't like the idea of him being one on one with someone I don't know, especially when he can't tell me himself about his day. So we opted for a licensed in-home day care. He's with kids from 1.5 to 5 years old, who fill me in on every detail at pickup, and has learned so much there.

If we were going to hire a nanny, I would have no problem with a man. It would just depend on the individual person.

If I had an older boy I'd be more prone to hire a manny. I watch Beverly Hills Nannies and there's a family with twin girls and a boy, and the poor boy wanted a guy nanny so bad to play with. I can understand that, and if my son was old enough to need a guy around to play sports with, etc, I think it would be a good idea. If my child was an infant, I don't think I'd care either way if it was a boy or girl, as long as they're qualified.

I would never be able to afford either, but I wouldn't NOT hire someone because of their gender--I'd hire the best possible candidate regardless.

What if someone said they wouldn't hire women for a particular job simply because they're female? An antiquated way of thinking about either gender, I think.

I wouldn't have an issue with it. When we hired our nanny, we came across a few men. Most of them only wanted to work with older children, though; we didn't see a single guy who was interested in caring for infants.
