@Silva: I think the specialty trainings would be good for networking/referrals? I haven't used a therapist, but have seen lots of Moms ask in local groups. I'd make sure to ask a client to put you up on yelp, maybe have some type of discount or open house 'meet and greet' that could be shared by word of mouth on Facebook groups. You could also connect with doulas, midwives, etc.

I'd definitely do a website-- make sure you figure out basic SEO and think about how someone would search; so you come up. i.e. "postpartum depression help in Mexico, Chicago, Houston area" (obvs replacing with your local towns :P

I can't believe how many photographer websites I've been on lately that don't have their location stated anywhere!

@Silva: I hear you. It is super expensive. Are you CBT or DBT certified? You could go that route to start. There is a trauma focused CBT certification as well, I believe.

I'm not sure if you do individual or couples therapy, but I would think having some type of financial certification would be really beneficial since so many couples have contention about finances.

@mrswin: that is a great suggestion, and I'd think it would be very interesting work for me. Thanks!

@bushelandapeck: You are totally right. I think the next step in that direction for me would be an EMDR training, which is an expensive and large commitment. I have done a lot of trauma-informed work, but EMDR is (in my opinion) the best course of treatment for PTSD/ trauma symptoms. I'm just not sure I'm ready to take that on. Maybe in a few years...

Through Google, no, I feel that I need some sort of recommendation to make sure they are reputable. Anyone can have a website :) I tried Yelp, but that didn't work either, so I just went with who was part of my insurance.

@Silva: I'm not sure how things are in the mental health arena, but I know educational professional development can realllllly vary in quality. So unless it's a very well established, well known type of certificate or program, I don't think much of it. If you're doing this for your own educational purposes, then definitely go for it! But I'm not sure (but really don't know) if it matters as much to clients.

@Happygal: I'm not sure how much I should invest in these trainings. I know m ost referrals will be word of mouth. But I know from friends and personal experience that it can be so hard to find a good match, and people often list interests/specialties without actually having any real education in that area. Plus, I figured if I did a postpartum training I could get some local doctors to give me some referrals.....
Hmmm

@Silva: I have women friends who are older than me, and sometimes life transitions have been difficult. I'm thinking of a friend whose main identity has been being a mom, and now her children are adults and she's searching for what her purpose is.

ETA: I 'm not too interested in seeing certificates or lists of involvement in professional development. I want to see where someone went to school, know their licensure status, and their areas of interest.

I'm bumping this with another question....in case anyone sees this.....

What specific trainings / certifications would you want to see a provider had? I'm planning on taking some trainings/certifications in the next few years to develop a specialty in "women's issues." There is a certificate program in post partum depression that I'm hoping to take next summer, but am looking for other ideas. I already have training and experience in domestic violence, sexual violence, and substance abuse. Other ideas?

I've googled and anyone who didn't list lgbt as a specific population they work with I immediately skimmed past them. I ended up going to someone referred by my GP and she worked for what I was there for but I stopped seeing her when I felt she wasn't that understanding of specific gay things that would come up. A lot of my queer friends use word of mouth (/see the same providers)

i would prefer word of mouth but i would totally google. if my insurance covered counseling, i would go to the insurance's website for the names, and then google research on each.

i think specialty areas and approach would be most important to me. if the therapist is covered by insurance, that would be very good to know as well.

Personally, whenever I've searched for a therapist, I've gone to my insurance company website for a list of names. Then I google those names. I went to one in law school because they had a great website (rare though).

@Silva: My mom is in private practice and she gets the bulk of her referrals from word of mouth (friends of friends, etc), other people in her industry (she specializes in family therapy and recovery), and the insurance companies. She actually doesn't have a website (she hasn't been accepting new patients for years) - but still gets referral calls at least twice a week.

I think people do default to "googling" a lot. I've found most of my doctors that way - but rarely it's been by looking at their website, I'm usually looking for their general internet presence - i.e. ratings from others.

I also agree that a good website is key. I hate not being able to see someone, get their background, their beliefs/philosophies, what they specialize in, etc.

You could also speak to some OBs and give them business cards and let them know you are interested in helping their clients out. Some may just not know others to refer to.

@yoursilverlining: thanks! I think I will do a website. I imagine I could get a lot of referrals from doctors if I have a PPD specific certification. It isn't my largest area of interes (although it is AN interest), but working with women specific issues is, and that would be a good way to build a client base and get my name out there, I imagine.

I have used google in the past, and would in the future. When I was looking for someone to see for PPD, it was so helpful to have my OB recommend a few people to call - - otherwise, I would have googled for a therapist for PPD.

My main considerations for a first meeting with a therapist are whether they accept my insurance, where they are located (close to work being a huge plus) and how flexible they are with their scheduling. A good website would be a HUGE plus.

I have googled! I have then read results on a website that listed the therapist's specialties, etc. I forget the name of said website. I would love to see a nice website with the therapist's photo, bio, specialties, philosophies, etc. That would definitely increases my chances of choosing them!
I have also had doctor referrals and used a person through an EAP at work. I wouldn't ask for friends/family referrals since if I was seeking therapy, it might be for a personal issue I wasn't discussing with anyone else.

ETA: good luck! :)

I did use google.

I used my insurance website first (it was actually super helpful and listed therapists by their specialties) and then when I had a shorter list, I googled the people on it.

I chose the therapist I saw because of some of the news articles written about her. She seemed like a down to earth sort of person and was in favor of getting outside of the office and encouraging walking and exercise as part of therapy. She just sounded like someone I could get on board with.

@Mrs. Pen: good suggestions. It's a helpful reminder that ultimately you need to have a good connection with a therapist to make it work.

I'm thinking about focusing on a specialty in women's issues, and looking at a few certificates that would hone in on that, like one in ante/post partum depression and anxiety....I think I could probably get some referrals from doctors offices that way, but I'm not sure how much a random person cares about a week long training I did when they are looking for someone, you know? Wonder if my time would be better spent learning a new technique or something.

Yes! I would look online because I normally wouldn't want anyone to know if I was seeing someone. the way I looked is clinics in my area, and then I would view their websites. like PUI said, a professional looking site is important. I enjoyed reading the bios about the therapists - where they went to school, what their special interests were, a little bit about their personal life, etc.

Just saw that this is for your own practice. As someone in Marketing, I think time spent cultivating a nice website/online presence would not be wasted at all. It may not be THE way people are finding you, but I hardly do anything without double checking with Google first. :)

Word of mouth is probably best, but if no one can refer on to you I see no reason to not call a few you found online. I would look for a professional looking site with good information and preferably a picture of the therapist.

I found mine by looking to see who was covered on our insurance! Then called around until I found one that could see me almost asap. Sounds silly, but it worked out. I wouldn't hesitate to use Google though. I don't know about you, but when I was at the point when I needed to start seeing a therapist, I was not comfortable asking around for a recommendation from friends. If you have friends you feel comfortable asking, that seems like a great route! Hope everything's ok - hugs!
