@Mrs. Superhero: At 4 weeks old, my LO smelled the breastmilk off my cousin and literally reached out to her. He preferred her over all the other people he 'met'. I was slightly offended that my baby would do that! :) But it made me realize that a newborn maybe doesn't care. A hungry baby needs to get fed.

As for actually doing it, I would feel super weird about it. Maybe less weird if it was a newborn?

@Coco Bee: that's a funny story bat the six month old. Sharing bodily fluids is very personal. Only in an emergency situation, preferably with permission.

I should add that I only have three people in my life I would do this so casually for, and one is past this stage so it will never happen! In an emergency, sure, but not just whenever. Also, I'd only let someone nurse my daughter if I really trust their history. HIV is no joke!

I'd do it if in a pinch but would feel more comfortable pumping and bottle-feeding. Kudos to you mommies who have no issues with breastfeeding someone else's child and vice versa - I think that's pretty awesome.

I totally would! I would be comfortable with someone nursing my DD too, as long as it was someone I was very close to.

A couple weeks ago my girlfriend ran out of pumped milk for her LO (she exclusively pumps) and we were at a graduation party. She gratefully accepted a bottle of my pumped milk I had with me and fed it to her hungry LO.

My mom and her best friend used to take turns babysitting for each other, and my mom's friend would always breastfeed my sister because she refused a bottle until she was 2.

@Minnie_Girl: Agreed. A child has to eat!!

@Mrs. Superhero: I have a similar scenario!! Well... kinda. So my milk came in on day 3 - I was SO engorged that my son couldn't latch on because my breasts were huge and rock solid. It was frustrating and emotionally draining. My midwife didn't want me to pump because that would only serve to stimulate more milk production. My sister had a 6-month old son at the time, and she said, "Hey! Try nursing him, see if he can drain you a little!" Haha we laughed like it was a joke... but then we decided to try it.
But he was already 6 months and he looked at me like what the heck do you think you're doing, you are not my mother!! Haha we couldn't get him to latch on :)

So yes, I would nurse my sisters' babies. Not sure about anyone else?? Maybe a very close friend.

I have donated breastmilk to a friend in need though.

I'd not want to go all Grapes of Wrath on anyone, but if a hungry baby needed it and I could help them, sure. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but that hardly matters compared to the child's most basic needs.

If someone was watching my LO while I was out and the baby was hungry, I think I'd be ok with it and vise versa. However, I could only do it if I asked permission first and I don't know if I'd get up the guts to ask! Somehow, it really feels like an overstep and yet I'm not sure why.

I was out to dinner with DH, my BFF's hubby and their ds and he ate his bottle super fast followed by a super fussy period. I kept wanting to offer to nurse him because his poor daddy was just trying tot calm him down. I would be fine with doing it.

I would definitely pump and donate for them, but I don't know how I'd feel about nursing someone else's baby. BFing is just such an intimate thing for me that I think it would feel a little uncomfortable to nurse a baby that wasn't my own.

everyone seems to think breast feeding is so amazing and natural for their own baby, so i don't see how it's not also natural for someone else's baby. i mean, the whole point of your boobs is to feed anyway.

i would do it for sure, and i wouldn't mind someone else nursing my baby (given i ask them to or give permission). i don't find it any different than someone else feeding my little one a bottle. milk is milk.

To start off with, I'm an Auntie for the first time! Soooo exciting, I've never loved a little baby that isn't my own this much!

The other day, when the baby was only two days old, my sister in law was trying to get some sleep and her mother was next door at my mother's house trying to keep the baby happy. She'd been nursing every few minutes for two days! The baby was fussing and when I walked by she stopped fussing and followed me going past with little hungry noises. I guess I smell like milk! Long story short(ish) I ended up nursing her for a little and my grateful SIL got two hours of sleep.

I thought it would be weird, but it wasn't. If that makes sense. Have you ever nursed another baby?
