I'm glad to hear it was cancelled, but I think it's terrible the way they timed it. I have a friend who was supposed to run in it last year but deferred a year because she was a bridesmaid in my wedding that weekend. I've been trying to get in touch with her to see if she had flown out there or had decided not to go (or not been able to get there). I know of a lot of other people who had already flown in. He should have made that decision days ago. Piss poor planning.

So glad to hear they cancelled it - definitely not a good use of resources!!! I have a co-worker who was originally going to run it, but decided that she didn't feel right about doing so after the hurricaine. She said that she was going to be out the $300 registration fee but would automatically get in next year. She was able to get a refund on her hotel and train fees. I wonder if she will get the registration fee back now?

I am a NYC resident and am thrilled at the decision to cancel it. I felt very strongly about it, writing letters to the mayor and the organizers. The city is a mess still. My assistant, who is elderly, was incommunicado for five days. I walked 4 miles to find her because her relatives are out of town and downtown police precincts didn't have working phone numbers. She had no water or electricity. Not even a flashlight or a radio. The police used to monitor the marathon could be checking on people like her. I am so glad the people's voice won!

A good friend, her husband and her SIL were all running it this weekend to raise money for Polycystic Kidney Disease, which her FIL recently passed away from. She posted yesterday that they had decided not to run it, and would instead run a local route here in Florida in his honor. They are still be donating the money to the PKD Foundation, of course. This was all of their first marathons, and I know they were bummed, but she thought the whole idea of running it in this situation was ridiculous. I know she's happy they cancelled.

My brother just flew in today to run the Marathon. His qualification for it was unexpected and he was really excited to go run it. He just started competing in marathons, so it was a big deal for him. I feel bummed for him not being able to run in it, since he has worked his butt off for it.

I do understand why they canceled it though. They need that man-power to go to the hurricane devastation. I just feel bad for my brother because he has 5 days in NYC for nothing really. Maybe he'll be able to get plugged in to help somehow!

I'm not that hardcore about running, but I am training for a half in March and I have done three other half marathons, and if I was in the NYC marathon and it was cancelled I wouldn't be upset. IT WAS A HURRICANE!!! I don't see why they are letting it go on, somethings are bigger than marathons, like a hurricane.

I understand that people have trained a long time for this marathon, but a race like that just goes against the essence of what is going on in the area. If you watch the runners you see people tossing aside so much clothing, throwing garbage and water everywhere. It's just not fair to the people who have nothing right now to know that the city is making that a priority.

Among others, there's a group of Runners that will

"show up at the starting line, but will break off en masse at different points of the city to deliver supplies to places hardest hit and without power. This will mean departing from the race, to head to various buildings, running up and down stairs delivering water and canned goods, etc. Runners will show up to the marathon, as scheduled. Runners who want to help should post the words, “I’M HERE TO HELP!” somewhere on their bodies."

The marathon brings so much money into the city, there is no way it will be cancelled. I have no idea how they're going to have enough police to help out though. I don't really think it's right that they're undoubtedly using extra resources to get the race course ready for the runners instead of putting that energy into areas with the greatest need.

I know. As I read more about it I think of all the police needed to run the marathon - not to mention the physical resources. I think as a runner I would hope they would postpone the race - as the event really IS uplifting to the whole community and boosts the local economy - but I think morally it's too soon?

From an article I was reading:
"Last year, 8,000 people volunteered as part of the marathon, 4,500 pounds of pasta were served at the pre-race pasta dinner, 32,040 gallons of Gatorade were handed out, and 62,370 gallons of Poland Spring Water was made available to runners who splashed it on their faces while throwing 2.3 million cups on the ground."

As a marathon runner, I'm torn...I know the hours, months, and long long kilometers that go into training for a marathon - not to mention the cost for hotel, travel, registration, etc. I would be devastated if I was told a few days before that the race was cancelled.

However, looking at the devastation and pictures and knowing that I would be running through some of the hardest hit areas wouldn't feel right to me. Especially when so many people are still without power, food, water, shelter, etc.

I'm so torn! I always said that I don't know if I could visit the Dominican Republic when I know the suffering that is going on in Haiti only a few hundred Kms away on the same island. However, I travel to Jamaica frequently and there is certainly some sad circumstances there in parts of the country, too.

All in all, I'm glad I ran Chicago this year and don't have to make this tough decision!
